The Bass Zone / Phil Lynott RIP - 26 years already
« on: January 04, 2012, 12:21:07 PM »
I don't really have a bass hero
Except for one maybe: Phil Lynott.
No flashy skills, no bass solo's.
But tons of charisma
and a tight (and swinging) rhythm section together with Downey,
plus he was a killer songwriter.

Today it's 26 years ago he died.
RIP Phil

The Ebay auction just ended a few minutes ago.
I've been watching this bass for a week, hoping that nobody would see it ;)

But in the dying seconds the bidding got beserk, so I backed off

But wow, what an intriguing bass!

A Telecaster Bass. Short scale!
I have no idea what the big black pickup is exactly.

I sent BaCH a few pictures of Telecaster Basses a few months ago.
And now all of a sudden they announce this new bass

Should be interesting!

The Outpost Cafe / A great day
« on: July 08, 2011, 04:00:53 PM »
Just got back from a gig in our hometown Arnhem. The venue is called Luxor. It's an old movie theatre from the early 1910 era. The acoustics are horrible but it  it looks awesome... 8)

We did a support for The Wild Romance who used to be the band of a legendary Dutch rock n roll junkie called Herman Brood.
Brood died ten years ago. The band got back together this year. They've been playing their asses off lately ( 24 gigs in one month)

Their lead guitarist Danny Lademacher is an amazing guitarist. He plays beautiful short solos, to the point and melodic.
Plus he's a very gentle person. I am really thrilled I got to meet him backstage and chat with him before and after the gig.

When I got back home just an hour ago I switched on the TV and there was a concert of Larry Graham live at the North Sea Jazz Festival.
Wow! What a tight band! Great horn section. Great Show. Great way to finish a lovely day  :toast:

Gibson Basses / Shooting Ze Kollekshön
« on: June 17, 2011, 02:28:53 PM »
A week ago, my collegue Tom and I went to Frankfurt to shoot pictures of the mighty Kollekshön. In three days time we shot more than 1100 pics of the Gibson basses at Uwe's office where we set up a portable photo studio.

Uwe has an anekdote with almost every bass; every time I walked into his room to pick up the next bass he went: "oh yeah that one, you know that this one was built by..." The man is a walking Gibson / Music encyclopedia.

We got to see Uwe play with his new band in a real Schlosskeller. We heard/saw him play thirds and way past the 12th fret just to annoy his son Leon (who looks like Keith Richards anno '73).

Did you know Uwe is an excelllent cook? He cooked us the most delicious lamb with sweet potatoes and asparagus. It was incredible.

This week I've been sifting through 1100+ pics to see which ones are the best for the Gibson Bass Book that I've been working on for quite a while now.
The idea to make this book was born back in the Dudepit days when Chris Dekker and I got together and brainstormed about the whole idea. But a few times in a row we had to put it aside because work/life got in the way. But at the beginning of 2011 I decided to actually go make this bloody book.
I made a lay-out with pics I found on the Internet, just to get started.
Now I have the largest part of the photography done. And I'm working my way through the book to replace the Internet pics with the new real pics.
I'm really enjoying doing this. I'm combining several passions of mine in one.
Hope to get it done before december 2011.

Thank you very much for your hospitality and help Uwe!
It was an amazing weekend, you made us feel very welcome.
Big hug (and a kiss for the lovely Edith who made us the awesome breakfasts)
