Other Bass Brands / New Bass Day!
« on: April 21, 2019, 06:44:10 AM »
This Silverstone 1442 showed up the other day. The seller advertised that neither the tone not toggle work, but the volume did. He added Danelectro LaBella flats.
It's been around the block and has had at least two bridges on it, but it actually sounds great!

Sparko and his Grabber stood in the front line of Dr Feelgood of England, though he was, of course, overshadowed by now really gone singer Lee Brilleaux in his stage outfit, that looked like he'd passed out in it (and that in a ditch!), plus guitarist Wilko Johnson who really looked like a crazy sniper om amphetamines. Don't know whether they ever hit in the US, but I shure liked that band! Let's not forget drummer The Big Figure, a wall for any rock bass player to lean on.
This is -75, before Sex Pistols, and the rest.
Just one more thing that this video makes absolutely clear: Speeeed kills! (Even though it keeps you in style, fashionwise)

That's a great clip!

Joe is correct, they are not nylok nuts. Maybe 50 years ago they made nuts like this for other uses but if anyone has found a manufacturer making them now we would already have a lifetime supply for our Thunderbirds.

The are more like a low profile hex cap nut with a rounded, almost flat top with a lip around it.

The insert in the nuts is nylon and it is there to prevent the nuts from coming loose with vibration. They are called Nyloc nuts.

Count on a dozen for me.

Can you send me a clear photo of that insert? I don't think the one nut I have has it!

Yeah, those pesky little things which are always missing....

I have one of the four I need. Over the weekend I reached out to some contacts in the antique motorcycle world about the possibility of having some made, using mine as the model.
Those guys in the antique motorcycle world can make ANYTHING and I've already found one guy who told me he can do it.

Joe said that the nuts had a small plastic piece inside to allow for intonation without removal of the nut. He's going to try and get me photos.

Don't know how many I need to make as a minimum but there's already enough interest for a few dozen.

I'll let everyone know how this goes.

Recently found this shot, looks like after the first photo Denis posted in post #6, but before the shots of where it's been modded. You can see the Orange cabs under the Hiwatts, which also show up in the earlier shot, and that a sticker has been added to the bass. The Orange cabs are interesting, looks like on the right there is a stack of 4x12s, but on the left it appears to be a cab, nearly as tall as two 4x12s, as there's no break in the middle. I would guess it's an 8x10, doubt it's a 6x12 or 8x12.

Awesome, thanks for posting that!!!! That's a great photo!

Why do you need a real '76 PG for a Fenderbird?

Because mine is a '76 Thunderbird that suffered a catastrophic neck break in NYC in the '70s and was subsequently turned into a Fenderbird.

Congrats on the find! I'm really hoping the new Gibson releases another T-bird with a similar pickguard in 2026 for the Sestercentennial. Fingers crossed.

It would be really cool if they did. Little details like that are really cool.

After searching off and on for years for a real '76 PG for my Fenderbird, this one popped up suddenly on Andy's Thunderbird FB page.
It's in my hands now!

I was pleased as punch he got it. Some years ago he asked me to pick up a Curlee for him here, which I shipped to him. It was the first time I got to try one and found it a terrific bass, still one of the best sounding I've ever heard.
Then later I found one for myself, so I was happy that I was able to link him up with this one.

As an FYI, he posted pics on FB and someone chimed in that those wavy Grover tuners were called the "Titan" model by Grover. Never knew that!

Yes, I saw the 2019 Cherry Sunburst Thunderbird.  ;)

And to Chris, I did'nt see the proper Reverb page until I chose shipping to United States instead of Sweden on the left side menu (kind of like Dave said).

That's really nice looking!

John McVie in 1970 with an NR Tbird! Don't think it's been posted before.
