Think this is worth it? I suspect so, at least in the long run.

The Bass Zone / Advice on fingering vs using a pick?
« on: August 05, 2009, 06:49:55 AM »
The entire time I've been learning and practicing I've been using a pick, but want to start using fingers more. I've tried several of the basses to see which is easiest to try it out on, and find the BaCHbird one of the easiers, in part because the pickup is a great place to rest my thumb.

If anyone has any advice for learning how use fingers vs pick, I'm ALL hears!

Thanks!

Bass Amps & Effects / Sunn Coliseum 300...
« on: August 03, 2009, 06:48:36 AM »
So I have a Sunn Coliseum 300 on the way. A friend suggested a 2x15 cabinet but I figured you guys would have some great suggestions. Since I seem to be well on the path to a Gibson/Epiphone sickness, what are your suggestions?

And exactly how strong is this Sunn?

Thanks!

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / NR project idea...
« on: August 03, 2009, 06:26:10 AM »
I've really come to like the BaCHbird now that I've gotten used to it, and the NR bodystyle in general is one I've really grown to like as well.
Two T-bird pickups were in the Victory case when I brought it home and they gave me an idea.
I was thinking about taking the neck/headstock off an Epi Thunderbird and those two T-bird pickups, coming up with a NR body, like an Epiphone or some generic one, and building a NR using original Gibson parts for the rest.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Is it worth doing for anything other than for the hell of it? For all I know, everyone here's already done it.

The Bass Zone / So, with which bass do you practice?
« on: July 29, 2009, 12:13:38 PM »
This question was on another forum and thought it would be appropriate here as well. Besides, I'm curious about it.

Mostly I've been using Thunderbird No. 1 for practice.

You?

This fits very well in the WTF category of bass, but I have to admit I find it utterly fascinating! Bet it sounds cool too.

Gibson Basses / Les Paul Special
« on: July 16, 2009, 05:43:08 AM »
Last Friday I went to see The Olympic Ass-kicking Team at Sadlacks, a small outdoor joint which has been around for decades. The bass player, Jack Cornell, played most of the gig with a P-bass, but towards the end switched to a Gibson Les Paul Special bass. He said it was a one year only model (1990, I think?) as Gibson "screwed it up by adding binding and all that other junk", the next year. It SOUNDED fantastic! What does everyone think of them? I've heard they are prone to neck warping, but that could have been in reference to later ones.

Badger posted this picture elsewhere so I doubt he'd mind me doing the same.

Gibson Basses / For the price I couldn't resist.
« on: June 26, 2009, 02:46:56 PM »
Some kid had this 2006 Korean T-bird on Craigslist yesterday and I picked it up today at lunch. Looked like it was left in a room where someone was doing some drywall and it had been knocked over a couple of times (paint spots on the headstock) and there's a little buckle rash on the back. But for $85 I couldn't say no. Plays well too!

He said it was bought new last year, but I though all T-birds were made in China now? It's only 200-odd numbers later than my other one.

'02 Fender Telecaster Classic 60. The guy wanted $250 but noticed it was missing the pickup selector knob so knocked $20 off. Got the replacement at Harry's Guitar Shop for $1.58.

They are all appearing together at Carolina Theater as SMV Monday, June 8. Has anyone seem them perform together? I'm thinking it ought to be well worth it.

Gibson Basses / '90s Epi Grabber?
« on: May 19, 2009, 06:18:08 AM »
Saw on Craigslist what was advertised as a 1990's Epiphone Ripper, but it a single pickup so I think it's a Grabber. I didn't know Epi offered those. I've emailed the guy about it so we'll see.

Bass Amps & Effects / Bass amp help/question
« on: May 17, 2009, 02:54:31 PM »
So, yesterday afternoon I was practicing with the Dano (replacement neck installed) and the Fender Bassman Compact (solid state) and all was well. Put everything away and went to a cookout in the afternoon, where I saw Pamlicojack and talked basses for a while.

This afternoon I pulled them out again and absolutely no sound out of the amp at all. The on/off switch light's on, fuses good, compressor light flickering and dead silence. Took the speaker out and it's in perfect condition, including the wiring. Nothing is looks or broken, so I suspect something on the board is bad or the "transformer" for lack of a better word, has gone bad.

Ideas? Thanks!
