Gibson Basses / NBD!!!
« on: December 28, 2017, 07:09:47 PM »
My new Epi Vintage Pro arrived today. This thing is spectacular! Fit and finish are excellent, nothing out of place, not sharp edges on the frets.  I tuned it and played it not 10 minutes after it arrived. It sounds GREAT!
Epi has a real winner with this one!

I thought about this the other day and wonder what a mahogany Ripper would sound like. Rather curious about it.
Has anyone ever tried building one?

« on: December 09, 2017, 07:27:40 AM »
I was asked if I wanted to play bass with a couple of friends in a project they are working on. So, while studying Rockpile songs, I found this vid. Nick Lowe with a Hamer 8 string!

Gibson Basses / Ripper Family Photo
« on: November 21, 2017, 07:36:44 AM »
I realized yesterday I'd not taken a photo of the Ripper family so here is one now. Though they all sound different they are very much of the same family! It's a little blurry..
Left to right, 2012 G3, '73 with Seymour Duncan pickups and my '80. The '80 weighs almost a pound and a half more than the '73!

The Outpost Cafe / Saw King Crimson here Oct 26
« on: October 29, 2017, 02:36:33 PM »
So, King Crimson. I'd never seen them before but listened to a lot of their music in high school and college, so when I learned they were going to be in town there was no way I was going to miss it. It was the first time King Crimson played in Raleigh since March 29, 1972 when they performed in Dorton Arena.

I'm glad I went and immediately wished they were playing for two nights.

The show was incredible. The music was delicate, brutal, technical, warm, dissonant, orchestrated, beautiful, unnerving, cacophonous, melodic, brilliant.
It was an assault.

Here's the setlist from the show.

The Outpost Cafe / Reason for being AWOL...
« on: August 05, 2017, 09:05:05 AM »
...because I've been working on my damn Indian! Finished it, finally! I have about 1000 miles on it now, though I'm still working out bugs.
This is a great motorcycle and really, because I built it from a pile it is, and always will be, a great source of pride!

« on: January 21, 2017, 10:06:42 AM »
A friend (Rexdiablo on here) and I agreed to swap my Sunn Coliseum and the Sunn 2x15 for his '64 EBO. It's a terrific bass and he loves the Sunns, so we both came out ahead!

Gibson Basses / NR II on eBay
« on: March 19, 2016, 07:11:03 PM »
Looks nice, though it's a strange color.
Not sure if it had a neck break but you can see the joint. Looks too even to be a break.

To put it brutally, the musicians in bands I grew up listening to have been dying since the 1960s. That many of them lived until the past year or so is simply the realization that some of them made it. In the early days they died of drug overdoses, extreme alcoholism, accidents, sometimes suicide or murder.

Some died later on from the same things.

Some died later from the lingering affects of one resulting from the other.

These days, cancer and simply old age are taking their toll. It's really sad to say but we can expect this to become more frequent in the next few years. We're lucky to have had some of them stuff performing as long as they have.
