The Outpost Cafe / Anyone heard from Hörnisse?
« on: August 07, 2022, 07:33:43 AM »
Has anyone heard from Hörnisse (Bobby De La Cruz) lately?
I see he was last active hear in 2017 but I kept up with him on FaceBook, asking each other to look at basses we were interested in each other's towns, etc.
I haven't heard from him since January and his FB account seems to be gone, he's unavailable on Messenger and emails to him here, through regular email and calls to the number I have have gone unanswered.
If anyone knows anything, let me know, please.
Hope he's okay.
Thanks!
Denis

Other Bass Brands / New Bass Day - Coral/Hagstrom Longhorn
« on: February 03, 2022, 11:29:01 AM »
Been a while since I've logged in: I hope everyone is well!

Thought I'd share a photo of my latest: a Coral/Hagstrom Longhorn built by Subway/Fatdawg Guitars in the 1980s. I sent them a photo and they said they could still build a few using NOS Coral Longhorn bodies, but they wouldn't use a Hagstrom neck. Apparently they are pretty rare and valuable.
I think the pickup and knobs are also Hagstom.

I have to deal with the bizarre ground wire, but the bass plays, sounds and looks great!

Gibson Basses / Epi Vintage Pro question: fake?
« on: March 13, 2020, 07:42:02 AM »
Ran across a white Vintage Pro Thunderbird last night at a local store.
It had lots of paint flaws in the back: thin spots, spots that looked like a different shade of white, cracks in the paint about 2" below the spot where T birds traditionally break, etc.

The back of the neck itself almost looked like a satin finish whereas the body was a gloss white.
The serial number was stamped into the headstock, but covered with a sticker with another number.
Also stamped into the headstock above the tuners was "2nd".

My Vintage Pro has the serial number silkscreened in gold and was made in Indonesia.

If this white one really is a Vintage Pro made in Indonesia, why would they bother to send a "2nd" to the US?

Is there such a think as a fake Epi Tbird, as ludicrous as it sounds?

Other Bass Brands / New Bass Day!
« on: April 21, 2019, 06:44:10 AM »
This Silverstone 1442 showed up the other day. The seller advertised that neither the tone not toggle work, but the volume did. He added Danelectro LaBella flats.
It's been around the block and has had at least two bridges on it, but it actually sounds great!

Gibson Basses / '60s Thunderbird bridge nuts...
« on: February 11, 2019, 05:51:30 AM »
Yeah, those pesky little things which are always missing....

I have one of the four I need. Over the weekend I reached out to some contacts in the antique motorcycle world about the possibility of having some made, using mine as the model.
Those guys in the antique motorcycle world can make ANYTHING and I've already found one guy who told me he can do it.

Joe said that the nuts had a small plastic piece inside to allow for intonation without removal of the nut. He's going to try and get me photos.

Don't know how many I need to make as a minimum but there's already enough interest for a few dozen.

I'll let everyone know how this goes.

Gibson Basses / Bicentennial PickGuard in house!
« on: October 12, 2018, 10:18:29 AM »
After searching off and on for years for a real '76 PG for my Fenderbird, this one popped up suddenly on Andy's Thunderbird FB page.
It's in my hands now!

Because I'm curious...

Haven't done a poll on here and I can't preview it so I might have to make changes...

The Outpost Cafe / So, what have you been listening to lately?
« on: February 08, 2018, 11:49:45 AM »
I ran across Nightwish kind of by accident while listening to something else on YouTube and gave them a try.

I like them a lot! The current singer is Dutch and she has a terrific voice. The bass player often uses a Buzzard, which is interesting to see.

The Outpost Cafe / Suggestions for photo hosting site?
« on: January 10, 2018, 06:16:25 AM »
I thought there was a thread about photo hosting sites but can't find it.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a good site?
Thanks!
Denis

Bah, not being able to see the photos while I'm doing this is not working for me.
I'll have to figure something out.

I chose to post this here since Glenn was such a heavy user of Gibson basses.
For fun on a JT forum I put together a timeline of Glenn Cornick's basses from pre-JT through Wild Turkey. I later included Paris in the range because I finally found a photo of what I believe to be the Eccelshall Thunderbird he had built using hardware and the original pickup from his Inverness Green NR. The photo online was simply titled GlennCornickTomPeterson and I found references to it on Eccelshall's website, but none of the links to photos of it worked for me. I've emailed the company for info and/or confirmation.

Apologies if this bass has been discussed here before.

I like it!

Gibson Basses / New Embassy at Sam Ash
« on: January 04, 2018, 11:06:26 AM »
Today at Sam Ash I saw they actually had one of the new Embassies in Antique White. I was curious so I took a look. It's small and light and looked good until I felt the frets. Sharp edges all over the place and most of them seemed to be incorrectly cut to fit the width of the fretboard. I was surprised but wondered if the thing had sat in an ice cold truck for days and somehow caused the wood to shrink. I thought it was a shame.
Also, and I didn't know this, the Embassies are made in China.
