BTW, back to the original auction, did I misread the price as $1249 last night?

Congratulations! So I guess you need an Ampeg head to go with that 8x10, huh?

??? Please tell me you're being sarcastic. Trust me; I've got that covered in spades.  8)

Gonna get that Hughes Ric? That would be AWESOME!!!

It wasn't for sale, but I'm keeping in touch with him just because he's such a cool guy.

That's exactly what I've been looking for, and I found that auction a few days ago, but two things give me bad vibes:

 1. there are no strings on the bass- if you're selling a bass for over $1200, spend the $20 to put a damn set of strings on it, especially if you're a dealer, as this guy appears to be. The bass missing strings makes me wonder what's wrong with the neck and action.

2. the language later in the auction description is nonsensical cut'n'paste- so the guy has a lot of guitars that he doesn't like selling and he doesn't like low-ballers; so what? He could have taken the time he wasted on the large font rant and posted better pics and a more detailed description.

It's worth less than what he's asking, but that's forgivable with the "offer" option. I'll see how much I like my Epi, if South Chicago GC ever ships it. I bought it and a new case for it last Tuesday and it still hasn't shipped.

No doubt that it's cool to hear with some bands, ... And Justice for All (including Jason Newsted) but as far as the master tapes being accurately presented, it still boils down to how the video game engineer mixes what he/she has been given and then how it's captured to Youtube.  I didn't realize that it was a homemade clip from a videogame, and was thinking along the lines of EVH putting it out to rub some salt in MA's wounds. With that in mind, it sounds like what it is: a cheap computer mic on a TV speaker playing back an mp3.

Bass Amps & Effects / Re: Hiwatt Amp on Craigslist

That's one of the 90's copies that has very little in common with the classic Hiwatt circuit, and is more a Marshall/Mesa wannabe amp trading on the Hiwatt name.

Today I drove two hours one-way to pick up a recently recovered SVT cab I found on Craigslist. It was a neat experience, because the gentleman I bought it from is a radio engineer who used to double on bass and keys and quit playing bass because he found more demand as a keyboard player and was tired of hauling around big bass gear. He also had the coolest home studio setup I've ever seen in person, with an Allen & Heath GS3000 console and tons of outboard gear.  Anyway... the cab is beautiful and seemingly twice as heavy as my four other old Ampeg 8x10's, but it sounds the same, maybe better. I'm guessing this one has the slightly later ceramic magnet Eminence speakers instead of the alnico CTS's of my others; I won't be able to tell until I pull one and check the driver.

...by this point, I'm betting some of you are wondering what in the world this little tale has to do with the title of the thread; well, here it is: to try out the cab, he hauled out a very pretty natural finished Ric 4001. He told me that it was supposedly a payment for a drug debt that Glenn had made to a dealer in LA years ago and he got it from the guy the drug dealer sold it to.  I'll be blunt; I love the Ric sound, but before today, in all my time playing bass, I have only played two Ric's that made me want one of my own, and that includes a '72 with checkerboard binding I maintain for a co-worker of my wife that he bought brand new in 1972 and is in near mint condition. It's gorgeous, but plays like a football bat, even with a good setup. The one I played today would have been the best player by far, but it had low pick-player/chording setup. Of course, the Glenn Hughes connection is just a third-hand musician tale, but man did that Ric sound and play killer!

I got a laugh when he powered up the Mesa head, and I dug into the strings the way I'm used to playing. As I said before, the action was very low, and my technique is anything BUT finesse and light, so there was lots of popping and crackling from the strings bouncing off the polepieces. He got a very concerned look and began checking the cables and the amp until I looked up and smiled and said, "Don't worry about it; that's me." In less than five seconds, I knew the cab was fine, but the difference between my playing style and his was so pronounced, the racket I was making scared his young daughter! I might add, it was a pretty low volume demo by my standards.

BTW, if any of you are local to Bristol, TN or will be by there, he is also selling a Mesa Impulse 600 and a matching 6x10. PM me for his contact info.

I don't find anything too terrible about the playing on that track. It's obviously been "doctored" to sound bad on Youtube, probably as a swipe at MA, which would certainly be in keeping with the Van Halen brothers' previous behavior. I have a studio reference audio interface and monitors on my internet computer, and there is almost no low end there, just a farty, clacky, SVT tone that has had all the life compressed out of it by something of the 1176-ilk. The fret and string noise are horribly exaggerated, while the "meat" of the tone is missing completely and there is virtually no dynamic movement at all. MA isn't my favorite player by any stretch, but old Van Halen albums don't have that bass sound either.

Other Bass Brands / Re: Great deal on a Jackson T-bird at BassNW
« on: February 24, 2010, 05:27:03 PM »
Please guy somebody snag this! I just got a much better job so I have an Epi Les Paul Standard on the way and Friday I go to pick up my sixth 8x10. I have no T-birds; I love that finish; I love Jacksons of that era and a neck-through T-Bird is just too much. The only things that hold me back are the EMG's and the fact that simply I don't have the room to store the beast and my wife isn't THAT understanding.

A strange thing is that people buy a Sadowsky or Lakland cos they want a Fender, but 'better'. And they still use all the materials Fender uses... Why not a neck-through P or something. Or other tonewoods for bodies. Tha can be interesting.

I played a fretless US made Schecter fretless Precision copy with a solid rosewood neck and a walnut body. It was amazing!

...but on Lakland and Sadowsky versus Fender. I have only played one Fender that even comes close to the build and play quality of the aforementioned boutiques, my Fender 60th Diamond Anniversary Jazz (not the current red thing). That doesn't mean I'll pay their prices, though.

...just now watched her testimony. It's bullshit. Watch her body language and watch how carefully rehearsed her statement was with specifically designed "impact points." The gear shift is still a physical mechanism, and even if an "electronic fault" overrode the automatic transmission's shift points, reverse at speed would tear out the drivetrain and neutral would have disengaged the engine and redlined it.

I worked for a few years in the Sevierville area and I think I've met her and the experience was not positive. It's also possible she has visited my TV station, though not for anything regarding this incident.

I just flat out don't believe the story of the woman with the runaway Lexus. She changed her version of events after it was pointed out that she could have turned off the car. Now she says she couldn't put it in neutral and couldn't turn it off. What a damned liar.

..sad to say that she's from my neck of the woods and that behavior is quite the norm, especially for Sevier County: anything for a fast buck. My wife has that same model Lexus that predates the recalls, and you can easily shift it into neutral if need be. (I've knocked it there by accident with my elbow.) I don't think you can turn it off in drive.

It's for that last 5% in tone that makes the difference between a good and a great bass. I'm old enough to remember when vintage Fenders and Gibsons were not particularly desirable except for the quality of Pre-70's versus then-current or recent vintage models. Then, some people started discovering that the instruments that were made well enough to have lasted 20 or 30 years also sounded superior. Also about that time Alembic, who had been around awhile, really took off in popularity because as amps of poorer and poorer quality became the norm, onboard active tonal shaping became almost a necessity.

So on one front, there were the copyists trying to replicate the close tolerances, neck shapes and finish compositions of the coveted vintage instruments, and on the other, active circuits went crazy. Sometimes the two overlapped, and in general, the market has not been kind to innovation past accepted "norm;" see Steinberger and Kubiki for examples of that. Since the market and tonal preferences dictate a fairly narrow spectrum of "popular," most upmarket innovation has gone into refining, rather than redefining, the state of the art. US makers are definitely far more conservative than their foreign (Dingwall is Canadian- so not just European) counterparts, probably as a reflection of our relative social/cultural conservatism.

...if you all only knew what a redneck I am. The only reason I care so much about amps is that when it's time to play out and I roll into someplace, it's a good feeling to tell the soundguy, "Don't worry about the bass sound; I've got it covered, and if you piss me off with too much kickdrum through the subs, I will make you pay."  8)

I don't know if Peavey has all the old Trace info. You may want to contact British Audio Service, who specialize in old Trace amps.

here is the comparison of the second modification to a sample Fender circuit that was loaded in the calculator:

mine is the top line. JJ (tesla) and EH both making the 12DW7 again.

You'll want to move that low frequency "hump" farther to the right by using a higher value cap for bass, probably .47 microfarad, maybe even as high as 1 microfarad. You really want to try and corner the mids at 400 Hz. Right now, they're at about 30 Hz.  As it stands now, you're scooping out almost all the low end and midrange definition.
