Gibson Basses / Re: One of Gene's Grabbers for sale

...although everyone from New York acts a little Jewish.

???I can unequivocally state that that isn't true, and watching Seinfeld(of all shows) is a bad example.

"a little Jewish" - (what does that mean exactly). I am sure the Brooklyn Italians would have an opinion on this....

Television is not a good window into reality. When I would go to Washington State on business and meet locals, there were a surprising number of people that were amazed I managed to reach adulthood without getting killed, or at the very least, shot. I'm sure I can thank Law & Order for that....

And when you say New York, be specific. There's a lot more to New York than New York City.

Sooner than later is always good! I'm in for a white one myself.

Hearsay availability update:

Somebody over at TB posted yesterday that Sweetwater indicated the release date to be September vs July.

Just passing the buck.

In other news, Gene will be suing Summer's Eve because he's now a bigger douche than all the products they've ever sold.

That nearly got the V8 I was drinking to come out my nose!!!!

I bet the Jazz with those pickups totally rocks. I had a 2000 TBird and I liked everything about it, but I was in the thralls of GAS
and had too many distractions with items on the menu I still wanted to try.

I thought those pickups sounded great. Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

I have fulfilled my quota of pink basses (1), and even if I hadn't, I would never consider it on a Ric.

However, I find the FG variant very appealing.

I could go for that....

See, here's where you can use Leo Fender's genius to your advantage. Buy two Fender basses. Let her see you swapping necks. After that, you can keep sneaking in new Fenders and tell her you're just swapping parts between your existing basses.

She's gotten pretty crafty over the years so my success at sneaking in anything new is severely abbreviated, especially since I've pretty much hit my limit on Fender's. My Fender GAS is in remission. I have what I need and at this point she knows them all by sight.

Having said that, I will add that the upcoming Epiphone Embassy is extremely tantalizing, especially at $400.
I will have to mount a sale for one of those.....

Yeah, at this point I too have to maintain that balance. That was one reason I went and fixed up that G&L rather than go for something "new". The space was already taken up so technically I didn't add anything.

I have an '86 XL-2 that I picked up in 2004 (when they were still affordable) and had Peekamoose do a restoration
(refret, headpiece reset and new pickups run passive). Still plays like new.

In 2011 I picked up an '88 XM-2, really nice shape. The original owner had mounted an EMG boost switch that I didn't care for so since the extra hole was already there I went ahead and put in an EMG pre with variable mid. This thing is like an angry piano all day. They really don't need much EQ.

Congrats! Love them Steiners!

If a Steinberger arrived at my door, mysteriously or otherwise, I'd be elated! And to have wifey get peeved about not coming to get you....well, I say treasure the moment.

Unfortunately I have passed that milestone and achieved saturation level.
Now when anything shows up at my door the standard comeback is: "I better see one go out..."
???

What did you get?

Reptiles often get the short end regarding their personalities and general intelligence.

I had a tortoise that I bought when it was only a month or two old and kept for 15 years, until it got too big to manage in my apartment.

They may be slow, but they certainly know what they want. She would come out of her house and literally hunt me down to get fed.
She'd come up behind me and nip at my feet until food came from the sky!  ;D

I think that was your best move. Now you can look for something that's more effective right out of the gate.

If you want a jazz bass with lollipops, just get any old jazz and throw some hipshot lollipops on it.

If that were only true....

I have 4 modern Jazz basses and an intact '66 (with lollipops). As good as the new(er) ones are there's just no comparison to the old '66.
I did get to select it from a comparably aged group, and it clearly was the cream though others looked much better. When you get a good
one there's no denying that what it does it does extremely well. This one went from the original owner, to the dealer, to me. I have no doubt that I am a lucky guy.

I am not going to turn the "new vs vintage" rock over. I'm just very happy with the voice my old Jazz brings to the table.

I agree with Pilgrim's comment about strings. Having said that, you have a low level bass. It might take more than a string change to turn a sow's ear into a silk purse. There are reasons the bass was $250 - and one them is cheap pickups. Over at TB there's a very strong Squier contingent and I get the bang per buck thing, but ultimately it's a beginner instrument. An economical platform that leaves room for upgrades.

If you really like the bass (it plays like a dream and fits you like a glove) then I say get a decent set of pickups for it. You can always put the originals back if you decide to sell it.

Otherwise I'd say flip the bass, make some money and get a better one that won't need much improvement, if any.
Let someone else take on a project.

I always keep at least 1 Jazz strung with flats. My flats of choice are GHS Precision flats, 55-105.

From the same seller (no affiliation).

Refin - looks really good in that color:

https://reverb.com/item/5522375-gibson-thunderbird-ii-bass-1965-pelham-blue-unbroken-nitro-refin-by-lay-s

Original - seems a bit steep, but what do I know:

Are these valued at the going rate(s)?
