Gibson Basses / Re: Rex Brown and a Tbird

I have to say I agree with you Uwe. I've never cared for overdriven tones - as you said, it only showed I didn't have enough amp/speakers to do what I really wanted. Plus, truth be told, the music I play doesn't warrant that kind of sonic assault. I'm sure it works for a lot of people but I'm too much of a traditionalist to be one of them.

Give me a good solid defined bottom, muscular mids and a nice fat G string, all while still cutting the mix and I am right where I want to be. 8)

Nice fiesta red Precision! Perfect pic for Cinco de Mayo.

Thanks for that! This bass came together very well indeed. These AVRI 63's are touted as (nitro) Seminole Red,
though for the life of me I cannot tell the difference between the color gradients. Fiesta works for me just as well... ;)

I have no prob with the shirts. Great bunch of basses too, especially the Precision with what looks like some good old fashioned nitro tort if I'm not mistaken. On the other hand, wearing a thunderbird above the belt buckle should be a fineable offense   :-\

You're right about the TBird, but my T-Rex arms won't allow for it. The only way I could play it effectively was to bring it up.

The Precision is a 1988 AVRI '62. What a wonderful bass that is/was. Laser straight neck and the pickup was the bomb. Literally
a brand new 62 P. I loved everything about it except the 1.75" nut. It just killed me in first position - made my hand hurt after a gig.
It was with a heavy heart that I had to flip it.

However, that put me on the path to creating another one more suitable. Last year I got hold of an AVRI 63 P body, dropped in a Warmoth slim profile Jazz neck and loaded it with an Aguilar 4P-60 pickup. I am a very happy camper now - all those same great attributes the 62 had with a neck I can manage. I have to say the Aguilar pickup is outstanding.

Clearly in spirit at least...

Now that Hawaiian shirts seem to have gone the way of mullets and pointy headstocks I enjoy bringing them out
for that very reason!!!

And I never ever have to worry about someone wearing one that's just like mine!

I agree.

I mean, it's disturbing to think that a progeny would know this is not only required, but something on her "got-to-get-me-one-of-those" list...

You all are a rip!

I have a full collection of colorful shirts meticulously acquired over the years with an accumulation of basses to match - I believe in accessorizing
whenever I can. Talking and playing loud is easy - as long as you walk the walk! ;)

Since I am relatively new I thought I'd display one of my Gibson moments:

Other Bass Brands / Re: Hofner Violin bass on sale today only

I've still got a Jay Turser that I bought many years ago, just when they started offering colors other than sunburst. I got a black one.
For what it is, it's not bad at all. They came with a limited lifetime warranty! Neck is straight, no discernible dead spots
and I have to admit those crappy pickups sound pretty darn good. Right after I got it I strung it with a set of Pyramid flats
(1/4 of the price of the bass itself) and they've been on it ever since.

I play it very infrequently, but it was inexpensive, it's there when I get the urge and it fills the niche.
I could never justify buying a real Hofner, though my friend has two and they do sound excellent.

Or farther and farther from normal.  I just took an order for a Gretsch Pink Champagne Sparkle with gold hardware MAX.

I have a partial on that. The PG material is the same Pink Champagne Sparkle laminate Ludwig used on their drums.

You want to bring your guitar and bass to a gig but you don't want all the real estate a real doubler provides:

And if 2 necks are still too cluttered:

Check 'em out....and what a price point.

My first "real" bass amp was a pair of Dynaco MK3 mono blocks mounted in a wooden crate with a preamp my friend built. I was driving 2 - 2x15 cabinets, one loaded with CTS, the other loaded with Altecs. One night I went with my friend to his band's rehearsal and he borrowed the Dynacos to power the PA.

The drummer loved them and offered to trade me a '69 Sunn 1000S for the Dynacos. I took it. At this point Sunn was still using Dynaco parts. I had it restored and still have it. I believe it weighs as much as those 2 Dynacos did.....
