The Outpost Cafe / Flooding in Germany and Belgium
« on: July 16, 2021, 11:34:25 AM »
I am hoping that all of our members, and, well, EVERYBODY is OK over in that part of the world. I know many have already been lost, and ten times more still missing. I'm not the prayer type, but sending positive vibes.

The Bass Zone / Random tone comparison TB+ versus P/J
« on: April 08, 2021, 07:41:53 AM »
Sorry for the click bait, but there are no sound clips. Just wanted to comment on something from rehearsal Monday night. I'm doing a couple of shows with a local band called LAVA Rock (LAVA stands for Led Zep, Aerosmith, Van Halen, AC/DC). I'm using my Fenderbird with chrome, guitar-sized Gibson TB+ pups. Later in the night, for some of the 1/2 step down songs, I put on my Hamer Blitz with DiMarzio P/J pups. The Hamer is a loud bass, but it did NOT cut through the mix like the 'bird. And it's just competing with one guitar, drums and vocals. I was surprised. Anyone else have similar experiences?

Rickenbacker Basses / More flatwound goodness
« on: January 21, 2021, 09:17:34 AM »
Got a cool old school tone on this one. '89 4003S with flats and a pick. I played/sang everything but the main acoustic guitar track and drums. Inspired by the loss of a friend/co-worker last July. Very different for me. It's like an acoustic ballad with a big power chorus, but it's 100% from the heart.  :)

Saw this on Facebook, and it reminded me of my friends here at the LBO!

Other Bass Brands / My Fenderbird
« on: April 15, 2020, 09:11:06 AM »
In case anyone is interested in what my Fenderbird sounds like, I shot this a couple of days ago. Long story short - John F (formerly redbird, drawing a blank on current user name) gave me the already painted body, and I went from there with a Mighty Mite Jazz neck, TB+ pups, Schaller bridge, and Hipshot Ultra Lights. Here I'm running through a Sadowsky preamp pedal with just a touch of bass and treble boost, through a Tech 21 VT Bass DI into Pro Tools with a slight touch of compression and through my 5.5'' Yamaha monitors, recorded onto my cell phone.

Link may not work without a Facebook account and video may be partially muted in some countries...

Precautionary insert by Uwe:

This caught my sinful eye while checking out Sweetwater's clearance sale. Slightly less exciting with the black pups, but I thought it was interesting to see.

Gibson Basses / Ripper pickups and parts

This may need to be moved. I wouldn't normally post this here, but I thought it might be of interest to someone looking. Also, the pics are good for general info.

Other Bass Brands / NBD - I did WHAT?
« on: October 21, 2019, 08:10:37 AM »
I bought... A Peavey! And it's a 6 string! Never thought I'd be saying that, but I've had it for a few weeks now, and it's a fine machine. I recently got involved in putting together a Peter Gabriel tribute band. It was initially to be a one-off for a special Genesis fan gathering in Chicago in September, but we've already got three more shows booked. Anyway, I needed to break out my old Guild Pilot 5 string to cover some of the material, including Stick tunes. Got a fresh new set of frets installed to perfection and a general tune-up by Fat Cat Guitars in Elgin, IL. I haven't played a 5er regularly in about 20 years. (Yes, 1999 was 20 years ago  :o )

SO, since it's become a semi-regular thing, I realized I need a backup. I'm screwed without that low B on a lot of tunes. I'd been toying with the idea of a 6 string for a while, and figured now was a good time to experiment. I didn't want to spend a ton of money, so I was looking at the Ibanez stuff. Some good options, made in Indonesia. Then I started noticing some good prices on 90s Carvin basses. I was close to pulling the trigger, but further research turned up a lot of complaints of broken truss rods on those instruments, so I passed. But in the process, I came across these Peavey Tim Landers TL-Six basses. I guess they were the predecessor to the current Cirrus line. USA made, neck through, 5-piece maple and purpleheart neck, ebony 'board, and solid maple body wings with 2 more strips of purpleheart flanking the neck. A previous owner swapped out the stock pups and guts for Bartolini. I don't have a lot of experience with Barts, so I'm kind of neutral toward them, but as I'm dialing things in, I'm finding some very good tones.

It's not a real looker - black stain on maple = turd brown - but it's OK. $515 shipped.  ;D

Rickenbacker Basses / Single truss rod!!!
« on: April 26, 2019, 09:40:33 AM »
Well I never thought I'd see the day.

They did this for this hot mess of a bass for the guy in a band called Sleep.

A real aesthetic nightmare if you ask me, but hey, to each his own.

They also have a newly engineered bridge with a more normal type of adjustable saddle. BUT they kept the mute thingy that probably less than 1% of Ric owners actually use.

The Bass Zone / Saddle-Less Bridge

This is an interesting concept. I don't know about all the promo/hype in the description (necessary evil I guess), but I'd be willing to let my ears and hands decide if it's a genuine improvement or at least a usable option.
