Other Bass Brands / Anyone know Bacchus basses?
« on: August 08, 2020, 02:31:35 PM »
I ran into this Bacchus Woodline WL-007 today used. Price is $349.

J pickups, nice slender neck, quilted maple veneer on body and headstock.  Turbo switch on the tone pot switches pickups from series to parallel.  I find myself really attracted to this one.

Anyone have experience with these Bacchus basses? This one is handmade in the Philippines, woodwork is very nice indeed, hardware is solid. Prices are irregular at various sites but this one is at least $200 under any other I find online.

Photo is from another website, still can't post my photos here....

It's a meme but I think it will appeal here, especially the last paragraph.

The Outpost Cafe / Grammy Awards
« on: January 27, 2020, 02:20:17 PM »
Interesting how Kobe's death impacted the Grammy awards last night. I thought they handled it pretty well.

But now I'll stir the pot.....

There were some deserved awards, but I can't figure out why Billie Eilish came away with:

Best New Artist
Song of the Year
Album of the Year
Record of the Year (a possibly outdated title)

I confess I'm not a fan. The two or three cuts I've heard of hers don't really fit into an musical genre I can name, and they aren't things I'd listen to given the option.  I suspect there is some internal political reason that she was given so many awards, but I have no idea what it is.

Liberace, in the early 50's, and a nice piece of product placement.  Dang, those guys could play!!

And if you ever wondered where Country Joe McDonald got the riff for his “'Fish' Cheer/I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die Rag,” it will all be clear to you....

The Outpost Cafe / Train Frustration!
« on: November 26, 2019, 08:13:14 AM »
Doggone. The train fans here will appreciate the frustration.

The Big Boy locomotive will pass through Greeley, CO about 40 miles from me in about 3 hours.  It's the only Big Boy in operation, the largest steam locomotive every built, and it's finishing a national tour today, heading north of me about 55 miles to Cheyenne, WY for storage.

In the past 12 hours we have gotten 16+ inches of snow, and it's still falling vigorously.  Getting that 40 miles east to the tracks may or may not be practical today, but I REALLY want to see that Big Boy go past.  Traffic warnings are out, flights are canceled, businesses are closed everywhere, and the roads are questionable.  Estes Park which is nearby but up in the mountains got around 2.5 feet of snow in the past 16 hours.  Roads to the east where the Big Boy will travel are described as "blizzard conditions" with slick roads.

I know I CAN get there - I have a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee with good snow tires.  The question is whether I should navigate the other vehicles and closed roads out there.  Roads are pretty bad, and the idiot factor of other drivers can't be ignored.

We'll probably get another 3-6 inches of snow before mid-afternoon, as it's not slowing down a bit.

Yesterday my neighbor and I drove east to the tracks paralleling Highway 85 in Colorado, thinking the train would pass in the late afternoon.  Unfortunately it stopped in Denver.  We found the pages at http://up.com with its schedule after we made it to the tracks.  Didn't realize it was coming north today, not yesterday.

I lived in Denver in 1973 when UP donated one of the five remaining Big Boys to the Forney transportation museum there. https://www.forneymuseum.org/

The locomotive and tender together weigh more than ONE MILLION pounds!  I had never seen "one million" ANYTHING before that locomotive! It's more than 2 stories tall. A true behemoth, as Mark and many others here can attest.

I've been to the Forney museum in its new location and climbed on the Big Boy there, and it's like climbing a house. It's the most impressive mechanical device I've ever seen...and I've visited NASA sites, too.

Here's a feature on the Big Boy:

Doggone it!! There's only ONE that's still in operation, and no telling when it will be out of storage again. I'm inclined to give it a shot regardless of the weather.  I've driven through stuff as bad as this in vehicles that weren't nearly as capable as the Jeep.

The Outpost Cafe / More Photobucket idiocy

Others may be getting the same threatening messages I am... Account is over free capacity, upgrade now.

They are lying to us. Not surprising considering how badly they are managed.

I just checked and I have 1.9 GB of files, and free accounts go to 2.5 GB. Seems Iike they are spamming all free account holders and lying to them.

The Outpost Cafe / Ideas on why videos have disappeared?
« on: October 26, 2019, 09:56:48 PM »
Hi, folks...Dave suggested that I ask this of the group. Over the past couple of weeks, all the videos on the pages in this forum have disappeared for me. I'm seeing still photos fine, but no videos.  This is true in all browsers, so it's not a browser problem.

I did install Opera's private mode, but that was after the problem began occurring. I have uninstalled it.

I can't find any settings in my account here which relate to this, nor do I find any settings in either Chrome or Firefox which seem to relate.

Has anyone had this problem and solved it?

Thanks for any help - Al/Pilgrim

The Outpost Cafe / Non-musical sign of the season
« on: August 09, 2019, 08:55:43 AM »
This was taken a few miles from my alma mater - Mark will appreciate it.

This is a Palouse country traffic jam; traffic bows to harvest; patience is called for.

And yes, they harvest wheat on those hills in the background, using specially modified self-leveling combines.  They feed the world, folks.

Here's the real deal in full operation a few years back. It's one of only two places in the world where harvest takes place on hills up to 45 degree angles.

This is about as steep as it gets. The cab and the header can be leveled separately to keep the machine oriented while harvesting on these hills, which produce 100 bushels per acre.

Bass Amps & Effects / Suggestions for re-covering cab..
« on: May 12, 2019, 07:49:48 AM »
I found a long-desired Genz-Benz Neo-X212T speaker at the right price on Ebay, but the carpet-style covering looks like it was attacked by leopards needing a place to sharpen their claws.

I don't need to use it right away, so I can take my time in re-covering it.  And since I'm retiring June 10, I'll have time available. It's 4 ohms, which I want both for my Shuttle 6.2 head, and for use with my 1967 blackface Bassman.

I'm interested in helpful suggestions as to materials to use in re-covering the speaker.  I'm sure I can use Tolex, but I'm open to to other ideas that are practical.

Other Bass Brands / Got my sights on an AFB-200
« on: April 23, 2019, 10:14:40 AM »
This one is local, and I'm hoping to make a deal on it this week.

Ibanez AFB-200, 30.3" scale, black burst, described as like new and looks it.

Had one of these in mind for a couple of years, comes with case at the right price.

The Outpost Cafe / A giant has passed! Dick Dale, R.I.P.

http://californiarocker.com/2019/03/17/rip-dick-dale-king-of-the-surf-guitar-passes-away-at-82/

Oh.....damn. I heard last week that he was not well, but I was hoping for the best.

I've been going to every show of his I could reach for the past 15 years.

He invented surf music, popularized it, and handed off to any number of bands in the 60's. His comeback was wonderful, and many young people and musicians are a bit better off for having heard him live.

R.I.P., Richard Anthony Monsour, known to ages as Dick Dale. You were one of a kind. There are no others.

I don't know the Gibson line like others here, but thought this worth posting since I tripped over the listing today.

Other Bass Brands / Saw the Brian Setzer Orchestra...

Wow, do these cats put on a KILLER Christmas show!!  This is a YouTube cut that captures the spirit of what they do for about 90 minutes nonstop.

This is definitely enough to put the love of Gretsch in you!  Brian played three of them - a White Falcon, a red and the famous Orange guitat.
