Bass Amps & Effects / Re: NAD - Fuchs FBT300

Yes indeed , and there are some nice lightweight cabs these days. That accept serious wattage.

I drive my stuff downtown every weekend. It makes life much easier.

Fuchs also has cabinets in the pipeline - just not quite ready for production yet. I played through a 210 prototype loaded with neos at the shop. It was pretty impressive - and a one-hand carry.

#79 is the SVT.
Both amps were set flat for the comparison, so some of the differences could likely be EQ'd out. The SVT had a hair more growl and the Fuchs was just a tiny bit tighter. Of course, given the difference in the output section, the two amps "feel" a little different. I couldn't crank either one up enough in the house to compare natural breakup at volume, but my guess is that the Fuchs would stay focused longer than the SVT. One really cool feature is that it doesn't require termination - a speaker cabinet - so you can run it into a USB audio interface and record "silent" as well. I think this one is a winner.

Bass Amps & Effects / NAD - Fuchs FBT300

When Andy Fuchs told me he was FINALLY building a bass amp for production, I was immediately interested. Andy periodically enlists my help in designing the graphics for his products - control panels, pedals and so forth - so it's a subject I've pestered him with fairly regularly. Actually, there are four models - two solid state versions with a preamp patterned after the elusive Walter Woods amps, and two hybrids, with their tube preamp roots in the Ampeg SVT. Both use the same Class D ICE power modules for their output section. There are 300 and 700-watt versions of each. Oh, and they weigh in at about 5 pounds. As an (aging) dyed-in-the-wool Ampeg guy, the thought of a 5 lb amp that did a reasonable facsimile of an SVT was cause for both curiosity and celebration (the fact that it is built here in Dirty Jersey is just icing on the cake). So after demo-ing the prototype for the 700-watter, I took the plunge on a 300 for myself. I have uploaded a couple of quick, sloppy, iPhone audio samples here for comparison and review. One is my 1972 SVT head through its matching 810 cab, and the other is the Fuchs through the same box. Just an MIM P-Bass with rounds. I'll let you all figure out which is which.

Gibson Basses / Re: Thunderbird humbucker EY Guitars vs Gibson
« on: October 07, 2023, 04:12:16 PM »
Always a day late and a dollar short, I am.
I would have picked A as my preference and as the Gibson. I have the EY in a few basses and, while it's a great pickup, always sounds more "polite" to my ear. By comparison, the Epi 60s humbucker from the VP is pretty growly - I'm sure it had some kind of effect on the development of the Gibson version.

Maybe try the EY black thunderbird replacement. I don't know what year they modeled them after, but they're relatively cheap. Their 60s-style pickups are pretty good. Separate neck and bridge with option for 9.5k or 14k resistance on the bridge unit.

Not a song that someone Chuck's age back then (32) could perform today with those lyrics and not elicit some sharp, indrawn breaths ...
Ah yes, those innocent times that weren't quite so innocent. Imagine a black rap artist transporting the same message today on prime time TV.

The Dead Boys and Starz both upped the ante in the 70s...

Gibson Basses / Re: Gibson Custom Shop Gene Simmons EB0

I got to play the Gene Simmons EB0 a few weeks ago, for me it's about as cool as it gets though the 10k price tag makes me want to go 60s Thunderbird shopping. https://youtu.be/LgrZS-TOQo4?si=LqAbGNV28nrzVryU

That price tag makes me want to go car shopping - not a 60s Thunderbird, though.

Nice bass, but a bit pricey indeed.

Hey Rob - Hypothetically speaking, what would a Brooks version of this sell for, and what would you use for the pickup? That's the part of the Gibson that worries me the most, since their recent mudbucker attempts have fallen short of both the original and any upgraded boutique reissues.

Gorgeous - and long overdue, but way too 'spensive for the hoi polloi - like me. :-\

"Members of the Taliban look on after setting fire to a pile of musical instruments and equipment"

There's many worse pics from Afghanistan and it's just "stuff" they're burning, but it's emblematic for a regime hell-bent to return to an age prior to enlightenment.

And of course they all have cell phones so they can convene for their bonfires.

I'm sure there's a Firebird X at the bottom of the pile.

... got his final wings I guess.

That shyly mumbled "Thank you ..." at the end of the song that instilled fear in him performing it live is touching.

I'm assuming the video you posted is the Cap Center 1977 clip, which is the definitive live version - and the one that Henley has lawyers chasing down every time it shows up on YouTube. There are often - when musicians pass on - musings in print and other media of impromptu jam sessions in the Great Beyond, involving the recently departed and those for whom the bucolic environment there is more familiar. It's a nice thought, although I prefer thinking that the first thing Randy did when he checked in was punch Glenn Frey in the mouth again... "one more time".
