Bass Amps & Effects / NAD - Fuchs FBT300
« on: October 14, 2023, 03:00:23 PM »
When Andy Fuchs told me he was FINALLY building a bass amp for production, I was immediately interested. Andy periodically enlists my help in designing the graphics for his products - control panels, pedals and so forth - so it's a subject I've pestered him with fairly regularly. Actually, there are four models - two solid state versions with a preamp patterned after the elusive Walter Woods amps, and two hybrids, with their tube preamp roots in the Ampeg SVT. Both use the same Class D ICE power modules for their output section. There are 300 and 700-watt versions of each. Oh, and they weigh in at about 5 pounds. As an (aging) dyed-in-the-wool Ampeg guy, the thought of a 5 lb amp that did a reasonable facsimile of an SVT was cause for both curiosity and celebration (the fact that it is built here in Dirty Jersey is just icing on the cake). So after demo-ing the prototype for the 700-watter, I took the plunge on a 300 for myself. I have uploaded a couple of quick, sloppy, iPhone audio samples here for comparison and review. One is my 1972 SVT head through its matching 810 cab, and the other is the Fuchs through the same box. Just an MIM P-Bass with rounds. I'll let you all figure out which is which.

Fender Basses / NBD Coming...
« on: September 01, 2022, 04:36:46 PM »
One of the first basses I lusted after was the LPB Jazz Bass in the 1972 Fender catalog. About a month ago, I believe, they released these Squier CVs. I was contemplating getting one, but my decision was made for me today when the Fender website started running their Labor Day sale and included them at a 50% off. So for $239 with free shipping...

From the ZZ Top Facebook page:
"We are saddened by the news today that our Compadre, Dusty Hill, has passed away in his sleep at home in Houston, TX.  We, along with legions of ZZ Top fans around the world, will miss your steadfast presence, your good nature and enduring commitment to providing that monumental bottom to the ‘Top'. We will forever be connected to that "Blues Shuffle in C.”
You will be missed greatly, amigo.
