Bass Amps & Effects / Re: Downsizing
« on: December 26, 2009, 12:51:48 PM »
The kids may have solved this problem for me...they got me a heavy duty 800 lb test hand truck for Christmas...instead of getting a smaller amp, I got a better two wheeler...actually kind of makes sense.

Re: Casablanca in B & W:

People behind the cameras in those days were artists...they used shading, chiauroscuro (think that's how you spell it) Sfumato...just like a painter....plus the story line is so classic...Bogey is just so cool...

Ingrid is awesome...

This is a film that is a work of art.

I am such a nerd.

Uwe touches a sore spot...

As an Ohio resident:

I will go to my grave believing Gov. Jim Rhodes wanted to make an "example" of students Kent State...I may be wrong, but that is what I believe.

Dave, delete if this is offensive

Bass Amps & Effects / Downsizing
« on: December 23, 2009, 06:53:31 AM »
Have been toying with "downsizing"...am already downsized to 2 ancient Peavey Combo 300's...I bought the second just as a "spare" in case #1 died.

We play very old school classic rock, ballads, rockabilly, with some R & B and funk (yes' I love to slap out "Superstition" or "Take me to the River" on a clean set of roundwounds-it's o-k in Ohio)..."Mercy" is probably the newest tune we do...we also do one Bon Jovi tune...this is as modern as we get...point is we have pretty good PA support and monitors when indoors...outdoors we hire out the appropriate large professional system (95% of the time, as long as the money is there--there's always a couple of jobs where the money sucks, but we do it anyway on our "indoor" system)...so really what I need is just a reliable workhorse stage monitor.

Are there any cheap one 12 or one 10  "workhorse" amps (100 watts or so) that weigh 50 lb's or less, and built with enough quality to still be running in 30 years (like my Peavey's)?  I'm very skeptical of newer Peavey's that I see, and the larger stuff still weighs a ton. Maybe Ampeg BA 112?

My youngest son has a little Nemesis combo that sounds good, but he's already had problems with it (it was being service for, like, 3 months).  This is what I would like to avoid.

Any ideas?

+1 on Casablanca in "glorious black and white"...my favorite love story. Ingrid Bergman was such a beautiful woman.

Have to agree, it's hard to beat his sound on a RIC

But don't you need to do that to play funk?

It is a cool design...

My family has 4 of them now...all have been good cars, economical and dependable--if not exciting.  I will miss Saturn--since they're all plastic, they never rust.

What is the deal with Rammstein?...Am I just getting old (or quaintly provincial), or is this more than a little creepy?

Maybe try Carvin PA Speakers?

I use their 15 inch woofer--it's a Celestion, and sounds o-k--nothing to write home about. Was reasonably priced @ (I think) $69 when I bought it--they go "on sale" a couple of times a year.

It will take everything a Combo 300 will give it, at least until the speaker protection kicks in...I just watch the light on the amp, and if it starts to get absolutely pegged, I back off the volume a little. I could probably kill it with the amp if I did something stupid, but as long as I play sensibly, it does fine, no distortion. Not a particularly "tight" sound either, but it works for me.

I used one all summer for a show in an amusement park here--I actually liked the head--the cab sucked.

There's a store near my house.

You in Cincinnati?

Unfortunately in Cincinnati the locally owned stores are pretty much just as bad.  Years ago I would do business with the local chain (with the owner), and it was o-k.  Now they staff the stores with jerks who generally piss me off so much when I go in to buy strings, that I won't buy anything else there.  Lately I even stopped buying my strings there.  FWIW, the "owner" is never around anymore--at least I have never seen him for 20 years or more.

It's not just me--my all 3 of my boys all pretty much feel the same way.
