The Outpost Cafe / Anybody ever get this
« on: January 25, 2010, 03:25:00 PM »
We were told over the weekend that the management wasn't happy 'cause our "people" (people that come to see the band)...don't drink enough.

We draw an older crowd that is real dance oriented...they typically have dinner reservations, eat supper, drink a few beers and dance all night.  A lot of them really dance very well...it's obviously a big deal to them.

Last weekend the bar held about 400.  We had about 350 to 400 there for most of the night...the last set is always a little slow, because they're older, and tend to thin at midnight or so (this is Cincinnati...midnight is late if you're 50 to 60).

The bar told us they want 30-somethings rather than 50+ somethings in there, because the younger people drink alot more and they make more money.

BTW the people all paid a $5 cover to get in.

This is the second bar to tell us this.  Actually kind of ticked me off...we draw a good classy crowd.

Anybody else run into this?

I do all my basses...it's not hard. I use a tuner.

With a fretless, I use a credit card to push down the string.

When I used a 4001 (years ago), I used groundwounds, and got a very natural "organic" sort of sound with it...think Sir Paul with more modern mids and sustain.

I think for me, its driven by whatever music I'm playing...if the music is repetitive eighth note rock, I reach for a pick...if the music is a little more "traditional" (90% of the time for me) I use my fingers

I'm at work so I can't play this, but typically Chris has my favorite fretless sound.

My son took me to Mike's in Clifton (Cinti) last year...it is absolutely amazing.  The website inventory is much less than 1/10 of their inventory.  You could spend all day (literally) there.  Sort of like Gruhn's back in the 70's only funkier.

I like to think I'm in the middle...this pisses off everybody, regardless of race, creed, color or national origin--not to mention political persuasion.

In Cincinnati, it always used to be the chili joints after a band job...any more, all of the chili places close by 12:00 or 1:00...if you want late night chili, you are pretty much out of luck anymore.

That was unheard-of in the 70's.

The only hassle is the prep.  Good luck.

Slinkies are great strings...kind to the bass, sound good too.

I love flats, too, but a 50 flatwound string would be too much tension for me personally, especially on a longscale bass.

Last year I bought a CSN greatest hits...

The cuts w/ Stills on bass are absolutely fearless...he actually played like all of the first album, and maybe parts? of the second.  All the later studio guys were boring (playing it "safe" in the studio)...
