Other Bass Brands / Dean Customer Service
« on: November 28, 2012, 04:29:10 PM »
Had another tuner fail on my 5-6 year old Pace Bass...called Dean customer service, and they sent one to my work in 2 days...no charge (they charged me for the first one that failed a couple of years ago-$15 bucks plus $10 S & H).

I was impressed.  Excellent service this time around. Looks like a better quality tuner this time, too.

The Outpost Cafe / In ear monitor system
« on: November 16, 2012, 01:47:39 PM »
Tonight is the second week we have used our relatively new in ear monitors (and new monitor board)...

it is actually pretty cool.  We have no backline.  So far we have a pair of wedges up front in case of catastrophic equipment failure (or in case one of our many friends want to come up and sing with the band).

It's worked well so far...using future sonics ear buds...they deliver a ton of bottom end, even when used with very little volume. So far I am very happy with the results. You can hear everything... intonation, when people rush, or play too busy etc.  With a little time, I think the band will sound much better.

Anybody else try IEM's instead of a conventional setup? How did you use them?  Do you still use a backline? Do you still use wedges?

The Bass Zone / Primus
« on: October 31, 2012, 06:35:40 AM »
Saw Primus last night in Cincinnati with my oldest son.  Wonderful seats, well behaved crowd, and a great show.  Not exactly my cup of tea, but Les can sure play. I had a great time!

Other Bass Brands / Dano case

Anyone ever found a hardshell case that nicely fits a Dano longhorn?

Other than original equipment or a Jerry Jones?

Fender Basses / Squier 5 string Jazz
« on: July 16, 2012, 05:23:58 PM »
Any body ever play one of these?  I played a natural colored maple block neck (painted, I think) one of these that was really good. It was really live, and vibrant,  and everything a good fender should be. Priced at $330.  Boy am I tempted...only thing that felt "cheap" was the finish on the neck felt sort of like a "Goodtime" banjo...like there was no finish on the neck, almost.  It felt comfortable, though...Pickups sounded scary-good...

Talk me out of it.

The Bass Zone / Octave devices...
« on: May 19, 2012, 01:45:52 PM »
Played a couple of sets last night on my Dano Longhorn, and boy was it fun to play with four strings (and short scale)...

The $64,000 question is...will some sort of stompbox get me the extended low range of of a "B" string when I need it? It would be fun to be able to play the Danos more often, but I need the extended low range for about 10 different tunes. Maybe 15.

Fender Basses / Re-connected: Long Lost Mexi Precision...
« on: August 09, 2011, 05:27:00 AM »
I had a late eighties mexi precision with a passive EMG select pickup that one of my sons sort of "took over"...i just let him use it, and bought my first Dano...he gigged the precision  in a "punk" band for a while.

Well, 5 or 6 years later...he moved out, and didn't take it with him...he doesn't really play anymore (sold his amp to another sibling), so I sort of "re-possessed" it.

I set it up with Fender 7250's, and cleaned it up...it was a real mess. Case was so dirty, I had to vacuum it out.

It sounds cleaner and punchier and more responsive than any of my other basses...literally a "magic" kind of bass. Tons of highs and high mids.

For me, it seems like I buy different basses, but it all comes down to the fact that a passive precision sounds best, even before it's plugged in.  Doesn't matter if it's a mexi, long as it is well set up. Love the EMG Select pickup, also (cost $29.)...I don't care for the active "real" EMG's...

It felt like an old friend gigging on Saturday night...

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Acoustic Bass Ground Hum
« on: May 23, 2011, 12:08:32 PM »
Got a ground hum in my Guild Acoustic bass...is this a job for a luthier, or for the electronics repair guy?

Any way to do it myself?

Have been running direct for most of a year...a lot of summer stuff is outside with a sound company (different companies), and you never know what you're gonna get...

I used my son's Ashdown Mag 600 through my JBL EON last night at an outdoor show for a monitor and got a sound I really liked. Think modern Ampeg, very warm and clean.

Question is...if I purchase an amplifier (head), which ones are inexpensive, sound good and are qualitybuilt and reliable.  I'm a weekend warrior, I play a lot, don't need a ton of power, but need an amp to be untempermental and reliable.  Would prefer something that's been on the market for years with a proven track record.  Would probably only be used at outdoor shows, so it should be good at running cool.

Ashdown/Acoustic/Ampeg/Eden/GK/Kustom...newer Peavey...Carvin? Others?

Have played Ampeg Ashdown and Eden...and liked the sound...

The Outpost Cafe / Fees to cash check
« on: April 29, 2011, 09:46:43 AM »
Had a new one on me today.  Was downtown and needed cash...my bank is a suburban Savings & Loan (half hour away). I go into a Fifth Third Bank to cash a gig check drawn on Fifth Third Bank.  They charged me eight dollars to cash a check written on one of their checking accounts.

The last time I do anything at Fifth Third.

Bass Amps & Effects / Plugging straight into the board
« on: November 07, 2010, 03:56:58 PM »
About a month ago one of my combo 300's crapped out on a job...sounds like I cooked the woofer with my 6 string, but I haven't been motivated enough to diagnose the problem yet...

We used my JBL EON on a stand about 2 ft from my head, made a separate monitor mix for just bass and roland v-drums (drummer has an EON on the same monitor mix), and ran the bass from my pedal board thru my direct box straight into the board for the drummer and me...what a difference...it's like playing in the studio only on stage....the time is tighter...vocals are tighter...

I wish I had done this years before. And a JBL EON (35 pound-unpowered) is a hell of a lot lighter than a bass amp.

Anybody else do something similar to this? Was an eye-opening experience--no more Mississippi mud for me.

The Bass Zone / Dadarrio's @ Juststrings
« on: August 12, 2010, 09:21:03 AM »
(no affiliation here)

Anybody notice their prices on EXL's? $22 for a twin pack? $19 for my sixer?

Seem too good to be true...our local music stores are much more expensive...

Other Bass Brands / Longhorn Case
« on: July 27, 2010, 06:00:14 PM »
Anybody know of a good hardshell case that fits a Dano Longhorn?

Just went out and tried a bunch around town and they're all a hair too small (guitar cases)

Bass cases are too big?

Someone around here has to have figured this one out...

The Outpost Cafe / Tom Petty
« on: July 16, 2010, 07:17:16 AM »
Saw Tom Petty and the Drive by Truckers in Cincinnati last night.  Was a good show...liked both bands.  90 degree heat and 100% humidity...both bands played through it like troopers.

My first rock and roll show in about 5 years (last was the Allman Bros.)

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Project fretless
« on: July 09, 2010, 07:52:32 AM »
I have a poorly de-fretted p-bass clone that a friend of mine found...he asked if I could make it so it played, so that he could keep it at his house for visitors to use.

What would you use to fill up fret slots, given this instrument is not really worth inlaying wood strips into the fret slots? epoxy?

I was thinking of filling the slots with something? and doing a quick level on the fingerboard, and calling it a day.
