Bass Amps & Effects / Small Bass Amps
« on: November 14, 2016, 05:46:38 AM »
Was looking at GK amps

Would like to buy a small light amp...1 12 inch speaker...something light to replace my ancient Peavey behemoth that weighs 90 pounds.

Basically a stage monitor.  I always have a nice PA to work with.

GK offers some small light class D amps for extremely reasonable prices

They also offer the 150 watt MB 150S, which is priced at $700

Does anyone have experience with what the differences are, and why would I buy one over the other?

Thanks

Gibson Basses / EB five string
« on: August 24, 2016, 10:40:48 AM »
Gibson EB V string-decent build quality?

What is the string spacing on these things? Wide enough to allow for the possibility of slap and other R & B styles where appropriate? (no jokes please)

Do they sound "Fenderish" enough for a guy that loves "P" basses, and really only plays R & B and country and old-time rock and roll...traditional Gibson tone probably is not what I'm looking for...

AMS has them at a good price and my trigger finger is itching.

In the divorce process right now, though, and I don't want the soon-to-be ex-wife to expect to own half of it....

The Outpost Cafe / New home in the Highlands

Seems, like Kenny, I too have become a Highlander...well, Highland Heights, Kentucky...

Since February 13, I have been living by myself in a condo I purchased in Kentucky...

Was a bit of a culture shock figuring out how to get a driver's license, and how to license the car, etc.

For the moment, at least, it is a peaceful arrangement.  Still married but we don't live together.

Any pictures I could send would not be as dramatic as Kenny's.

Other Bass Brands / Longhorn

Played my longhorn bass for the first time in maybe more than a year (maybe a couple years) last night. What a light responsive bass!...

I need to start gigging it again...maybe learn to do a quick drop "D" tuning for some of the lower stuff that forces me to use a low "B" string currently.

It just rips with round wounds on it...

The Outpost Cafe / I knew this was coming, but...

We had to put the family dog to sleep.  Thirteen years old, cancer in one leg...she hobbled around on three.

She was my best friend.

I have never grieved this hard in my life.

The Outpost Cafe / I retired from the music business yet again
« on: June 10, 2015, 10:23:22 AM »
Seems I just retired from the music business...stressful job, horrendous bad marriage, playing music way too much (getting like a job-one that pays chicken-shit)...all have me run down big time.  The stress had to give somewhere or i'd be dead soon...I can't control stress from my job or wife, so the band had to go (I can control it)....

Told them I'd stick around as long as it takes (I don't want to hurt anyone-especially some of them need the money-I don't). It's like 9 years of work going down the tubes--really awesome music that I really like-- (as well as 32 years of marriage and my retirement savings-potentially half of it)...everything is in free-fall it seems like...

Not a good place right now, but hopefully it will eventually straighten out one way or another.  I can still strap on a banjo and play in the back yard for fun.  Assuming I still have a back yard in the future.

Thanks for letting me bend your ear.

Pat

Bass Amps & Effects / New Product Idea...

A soft rack case that will allow you to mount, say an old Fender , Peavey, you name it...to mount the head in a soft rack case and lose the heavy wood case...

Just an idea...

The Bass Zone / Neck Relief
« on: June 25, 2013, 05:59:18 AM »
How much?

I usually get it as close to zero as I can, but I re-strung with a set of medium flats last night, and the relief was a litlle more than I'm used to.  The bass sounds good, has no buzzes, and plays pretty good...I'm inclined to leave it, just because the sound seems to have opened up and really sing. Sometimes when a rod is really tight, it seems to me to choke off the tone.

So, how much relief do you keep in a neck?

The Outpost Cafe / Digital Camera
« on: May 30, 2013, 06:24:17 AM »
Would like to buy an inexpensive one...

I used to draw and paint, and I thought an inexpensive digital camera might help me capture images, say, on a walk.

1. Do they come with the software to print? can you shrink and enlarge?  Can you do stuff like lay a grid over the photo?
2. Can you print to plain paper? As in could I print from my office computer to one of the big printers we use for tax returns? (I understand this would not be a "photo" quality print)...photo quality would actually be of secondary importance to capturing the image and manipulating it easily.

I have no clue...help me out here.

Other Bass Brands / G & L

Played an older G & L at rehearsal last night...had a single MM style humbucker in the center sweet spot....I think it was passive, though...

What a wonderful sounding bass!  Endless sustain, and clear and clean as a bell.

Bass Amps & Effects / Sold "Old Reliable"
« on: January 14, 2013, 07:56:45 AM »
Sold my old faithful combo 300 this Sunday...my only bass amp is a Peavey MAX 126 now.  It feels a little bit weird not to own a real amp.

Dad broke his leg last Friday, and was operated on Saturday to install a plate. Dad has had alzheimers, but his wife has done a wonderful job taking care of him...up to now he has been mostly continent and lucid, and not too much different than any 89 year old.  He could pretty much take care of himself, more or less.

Apparently as a result of the surgery/anesthesia, his cognitive level has taken a steep reversal.  To the point where he is in a nursing home, not continent, and  hallucinating...this is not good.  Hard to see someone you worshipped as a kid in this condition.

He graduated from High School and left home at 16, joined the CCC's as a surveyor, got an engineering degree, fought in WW2(saw combat)...worked as an engineer till age 70...and now this.
