Gibson Basses / Re: 50th Anniversay Thunderbird sighting!
« on: May 23, 2013, 01:27:45 PM »
Fedex has mine now and is set to deliver it tomorrow.  Not sure if I'll check a chance to do much with it since this is a holiday weekend here and my significant other has all sorts of things planned but as soon as I get a chance I'll post some detailed pictures.

Gibson Basses / Re: Question for new NR Thunderbird owner(s)

I got curious...My NR is just as hot as my '11 Reverse with the pickup height the same. Definately seems like something might be amiss with yours...

Gibson Basses / Re: 60's EB-3 Handrest
« on: January 25, 2013, 02:54:50 PM »
There's definately 2 different types, one that lays flat on both ends needing a spacer on one side and one that has a "leg" shorter to compensate for the pickguard.  Mine is the latter, I just think it's odd that I've never found any consistancy in what gibson presumably installed.....on second thought I probably shouldnt be shocked by that  :-\

Actually I'm talkin about an early EB-3 with a central handrest (similar to the eb-2 and melody makers). The pic is a little fuzzy but I think you can see how it rests half on the pickguard and half on the body.

When I got the bass the handrest was in the case but not installed, I've got no reason to think it's not original I guess, but a lot of things can be changed in all those years.  I think the melody makes came with handrests that rested on the pickguard on both sides so it makes me wonder if there were two types and gibson just used up old stock of the flat type by making shims to fit the body half...Who knows, just curious what others have seen.

I'm not sayings its fake or anything, but those 3's and 7's dont look anything like serial on my 79 ripper.  The 3's are rounder (like an 8) and the 7's dont have the hanging edge at the start of the number...the 9's dont look the same either.  Did they use different stamps in the custom shop?

Gibson Basses / 60's EB-3 Handrest
« on: January 20, 2013, 09:37:38 PM »
I've got an early '67 eb-3 ('66 spec) and I've always wondered if the handrest is original. I've seen late 67's that have a handrest with a spacer underneath the top side to mimic the pickguard thickness on the bottom.  Mine has a handrest with no spacer and the bends of each end are offset to compensate for the picguard height.  Does anyone know what was corrrect or when if ever they switched the styles?

I thought about ordering one in cherry but the ebony looked too good in person when I saw it.

Ha, How many times has this been on the bay in the past year?  I guess I always assumed it was a refin just because in the last pick you can see blue paint overspray on the edge of the TR cover.  & the pic of under the bridge looks like there is a coat of clear underneath the blue???

Either way it would be fun to have (at half the price)

That's pretty, I kind of wish Gibson had gone with the colored headstock like that.  I know it's not traditional but I like the way it makes the TR cover stand out.

Hi Guys & girls, I stumbled accross this post yesterday and thought I'd join up. I'm the guy from that other site with NR with mixed chrome and black hardware.  I love a good conspiracy theory as much as the next guy but I'm afraid I'm not trying to dupe anyone. I cant explain why Gibson sent out the bass the way they did or why they printed labels with "chrome" on the hardware description.  I'll try to post a pic of the bass that was sent to me when I bought it.  Reguardless of why or how they did it I really like the look of the chrome, I'm toying with the idea of swapping out the tuning machines just to see what it looks like.

Anyway, love my gibsons.  In addition the 3 birds I've also got a '79 Ripper and an early '67 EB-3 that was built to '66 specs...but that's a whole 'nother consipspiracy
