I've been anxious to see what that graphite pearl color was like.  The pictures on the MF site dont really give you much of sense of what it is though.  It might be one you have to see in person to really appreciate.

My gold top Les Paul showed up Saturday and was put through the paces at rehearsal last night. Other than having to move the strap button to the heal (something I pretty much always do) I have no complaints.

It's cold in Georgia today so I drug out a summer picture.  Too bad the midtown and I barely made it into the shot >:(

Personally I like the "open grain mahogony" high gloss finishes like the 50th Anniversary bird and the Pelham Blue on the NR reissues.  It think it adds a depth to the finish that would otherwise come off kind of plain.  That said, I cant stand the finish on the EB for a couple reasons. Mainly I'm not a fan of semi-gloss and satin finishes, but also just dont find the ash grain that appealing.

I guess it's probably smart of Gibson to offer something at a lower price point like the EB.  I just wont be buying one unless they decide to gloss it up and I'd probably be willing to pay more if they did.  ;D

I'll probably be in the minority on this but I actually like the black pickguard on it a lot more than the tortoise shell from the first years.

I like the idea of a little more variety from year to year even if it's just some different colors.  If it makes for some blowout deals at the end of the year I like it even more.  I've heard a bunch of models (thunderbirds included) are going to have a special 12th fret inlay for the 120th anniversary.  It seems like an odd year to commemorate, but then again I can see the 12th-120th connection.

Apparently the sale has moved some merch, I picked up the gold top Les Paul bass on day one for AMS. At that time they had 7 in stock and now they're down to 2.

Looks like Sweetwater matched the prices this morning for what they have in stock.  For a few hours yesterday they had up "Pre-order" listings for the 2014s.  I thought it was interesting that the 3 colors they listed for the Thunderbird were Sunburst, Heritage Cherry & Walnut...Not sure I can picture a Walnut Bird  :-\

Nice pic!  My band was in the studio and month ago and I snapped this with the phone

I ended up using the NR on 7 of 8 tracks.  Studio was kind of a dive but it all worked out and couldnt be happier with how the bird sounded.

Gibson Basses / Re: New Les Paul Bridge/Tailpiece Options
« on: July 02, 2013, 10:00:45 AM »
The ball ends are basically entirely outside of the tailpiece.  The tailpiece functions fine as far as holding the strings, maybe I'm just being picky by expecting them to disapear inside the tailpiece the way the stock strings did.  I'd say the holes are only about a MM too small so it wouldnt take much to open them up enough for the larger ball ends to fit inside.  I was able to order a replacement tailpiece to see if it fits better, if I have to I'll modifiy the replacement and keep the original in the case.

Gibson Basses / New Les Paul Bridge/Tailpiece Options
« on: July 01, 2013, 07:35:53 AM »
So over the weekend I picked up a used (but basically brand new) 2013 Les Paul Standard bass in Heritage Cherry burst.  I'm not really a fan of the color (would have preferred Ebony) but it was too good a deal to pass up. Plays great and so far I'm really enjoying it, but a problem appeared when I went to change strings.  The Ball ends on my GHS boomers are too big to fit in the stop tailpiece. Has anyone else run into this? I'd like to stick with Boomers, and I'm sure I could reem out the holes on the tailpiece but am wondering if there may be another alternative that anyone has found.

Thanks guys, if you get a chance to see one I really think they look a lot better in person.  I tried to capture a the grain in the back of the neck, it's really hard to capture in a photo but it seems like there is a change in the pattern that makes me think it's a standard 5 ply neck.  My attempt at a photo:

and it looks better too if you peel the plastic off the pickguard!  ;D

It's been a crazy few weeks and I finally got a chance to sit down and take some pics of the bass.  I know this seems to be a "love it or hate it" model but I am definitely in the love it category.  Looking closely at the back of the neck and headstock I can swear I see a grain change where the walnut stringers would be so I don't know if I believe it's an all mahogany neck but regardless it plays and sounds great.
