ugh...well, I may be the only person on the planet that would "upgrade" back to the 3-point  :o

Maybe they'll offer some better colors at least this year.

I think they should forward the wood chips on to the ultimate buyer(s) on this end. Or would that be too mean  ;D

Congrats! very nice, I love my Pelham Blue NR.  Yeah, the lack of wood grain fill might be a cost saver but with the clearcoat over it I does give a really cool effect IMHO.  Most of the complaints I heard about it were that it wasn't more like the original, treat it like a bass all it's own and it's great.  Fit and finish on mine were 100%.

As primarily a "reverse" player the only mod I made was moving the strap button to the heel, it made the bass hang more to my liking.  I used mine to record our last record and sounded great in the studio as well.

Enjoy!

Gibson Basses / Re: Beware of the forgery

IIRC didnt Entwistle buy the Discoverer thinking it was real? Had it even been appraised as real Gibson or something and later turned out to be a forgery?

I recall hearing about a guy in Asia making Moderne fakes and passing them off as the real deal years ago.  No idea what happened to that guy...

Paul Stanley's recent inteview on the topic is pretty good (video in the link).  I love how he ends it with "I'm Paul Stanley and the RnR Hall of Fame can blow me"   ;D

I think I've seen the clear ones sell listed for 5-700 US.  Unless something has changed in the last couple years to make them suddenly more valuable the price is a wee-bit high :o  Sometimes rare does not equal valuable.

And it's kinda ugly IMHO.

Thanks guys! I haven't talked to Bruce yet but I've seen his reissues before and he does some amazing work. I may have to give him a call and see if he can point me in the direction of a bridge cover, although I kind of dig the look of the bass without it.  The worst part is I like the bass so much it makes me want to track down a fretless...its a slippery slope, I may end up collecting for fins...

Other Bass Brands / Ampeg AEB-1

My latest toy is an Ampeg AEB-1, pretty cool bass in my opinion but I'm it's probably a love-it or hate-it type of a thing.  The sound of the "Mystery Pickup" is really distinctive sounding and I was actually surprised at the tones I get from it having always heard they were very much a 1 trick pony.  The neck has a wide and flat profile that's a big adjustment from my daily T-birds but It's been a lot of fun to play so far.

It came set up with what I'm guessing are D'Addario Helicore upright strings (based on the color of silks at the ball end) and appear to be medium tension (based on the color of the winding end).  Anyone have any experience running upright strings on an electric?  I dig the sound but the higher tension vs a standard electric string worries me a bit.  I know one of the initial design features of the bass was to be able to use upright (non-magnetic) strings but I'd hate to damage a vintage bass.

Anyway, it's a pretty great New Bass Day ;D

And there's the cheaper Greco version.  I got to try one years ago, it wasnt bad but couldnt really justify the price.  Nice looking tough.

This Isnt exactly like the one I tried but similar.
