Gibson Basses / 53 EB Day
« on: February 17, 2018, 02:42:41 PM »
Iv always wanted one of these and couldn't believe it when it popped up on Guitar Centers site last week at a great price. According to them it came in from a construction worker who was gutting a building before it was razed.  It was left in the basement in a pile of stuff that mostly got thrown in a dumpster.  Luckily he decided to make a buck off it rather that throw it in too.

The case hadn't been opened in at least 30 years I'd bet.  As you can see the metal bits were fairly corroded and case was covered in a light mildew.  Unfortunately no post, instead the case contained all the last owners tools, fuses, notes, some rusty razor blades, tape and cable that was being consumed by growing green grime.

As far as the bass itself it was well played but also cared for.  Some buckle rash through the finish but the frets don't show a bit of wear from the rotosounds it had on it.  Two of the tuners are missing the plastic buttons but the owner had a nifty little key that could be used to turn the bare posts.  The output jack plate had been replaced with a piece of white plastic that was spray painted brown. It crumbled to pieces when I tried to remove it.  The great thing is the pickup is in perfect condition and the original electronics all worked great after a little cleanup.

The bass was built prior to the introduction serial numbers in 1953 so with the help of some early LP gurus we were able to estimate that it was probably assembled in sometime in March/April.  Unlike the later models with inlay logos these early ones got the same silkscreen logo (with the dot connected to the G) that various acoustics got.

& After about 6-7 hours of inspection, cleanup, testing and tuning it's back to its former glory...Minus two peg buttons and post...

Other Bass Brands / Lap King? NR

Never heard of Lap King but looks like it was started by a former Hamer employee that builds Lap Steels.  It's a pretty cool take on a NR.

Gibson Basses / Staircase porn and a gratuitous Lo-Z family photo
« on: June 20, 2017, 05:33:53 AM »
I recently finished my project of replacing the newel posts, ballusters and handrails in our house; something I've never attempted before.  After completing it I can say I wouldnt wish this project on my worst enemy.  I originally thought it would only take a couple weeks but ended up being almost 4 months start to finish (Weekends, Holidays and a couple "sick" days).  That was for 12 posts, 130 iron ballusters and new handrails. TBH the project was delayed a couple weeks after I ran a miter saw halfway through my thumbnail, luckily stopping just as I knicked the bone.

Assuming no one will actually want to see a photo of my handywork I'll post a picture that people around here may actually be interested in.  The stair work makes for a nice backdrop I think  ;D

So if the rules at GC are they give you 60% of what they sell it for, does that mean an employee at this location paid $2k for this?  If so I may need to drive to Florida to sell some gear.

Seriously, how do they get something THIS wrong?

And are looking to record an album.  I wonder if Duff will end up joining them, or maybe Mark Evans will avail himself.

Gibson Basses / Don't drink and ebay
« on: January 30, 2017, 04:39:15 PM »
So I recently sold off a couple of U87s leaving me with a surplus of gear money burning a hole in my pocket.  Combine this with a few too many fingers of scotch and I apparently thought it would be a good idea to own one of these:

At least the sale was based on a low-ball offer I made in my stupor. And despite the vitriol expressed by Uwe I don't find it all THAT bad.  Its better than its flying V predecessor at least, and the finish reminds me of a time when I had more hair. 8)

Gibson Basses / Oh, the 80s...why?

Im 100% guilty of having owned a "crackle" finish bass 35 years ago but this one is just wrong.

I know the 80s V gets no love but someone please put this thing out of its misery before It hypnotizes me into growing a mullet and joining a Poison tribute band.

"Never turn your back on a puppy"

While packing up my '67 Bird this morning (for rehearsal this evening) I briefly looked away only to turn back and see this monster chewing on the headstock.

Don't be fooled by his innocent looks, I suspect he has a heart of darkness lurking within.  Luckily the damage was minimal and I'll have to just chalk it up to added "relic-ing"

The Outpost Cafe / Gaga buys Zappa

Or at least his house anyway.  I remember the house sale coming up in one of those Dweezil interviews of late but didn't know until I read this that Lady Gaga was the buyer.  As a studio nerd I hope she restores it right, but i know nothing about her really and dont have much faith. That said, I was shocked to read in the article she actually knew what a compressor was...

I always loved this story when I studied it in school. I'm not buying the British propaganda that her majesty's navy sank UB-85.  I hope the send down submersibles and find teeth marks in her hull  ;D
