Gibson Basses / Re: How much thunderbird will £3k buy me?
« on: March 05, 2023, 08:22:24 AM »
You're looking at north of $4k for a 70s model, depending on color and condition. Honestly, if you want to play it without worrying, you're better off grabbing an Epi Vintage Pro (or whatever they're calling it this week).

Its not about playing and I have lots of basses, most that I have built or recycled myself to fulfil every need I have.

I want some of  my savings to be a Gibson hanging on my wall rather than Krugerands in a vault.

is there anything old and fun and Gibson that will hold its value?

explorer? RD?

please dont make me go to a guitar forum..

shockingly I have Discovered Miley Cyrus as a serious artist ! thats a sentence I never thought i'd type

I love covers, my favorite type of music is a song I know, but with a twist

Miley does loads of covers and shes good at riding the sweet spot between devotion to the original and putting her spin on it.

her voice is like if Stevie Nicks was a hard rocker

I find it very heartening that Steve Stevens is still being Steve f***ing Stevens, but I prefered Billy Idol when his face moved

making  james Hatfield look bad with his own song

theres like a million more, shes a cover version machine!

following on from this thread, https://bassoutpost.com/index.php?topic=12304.0

I think if I'm going to do this I really want a Gibson, ideally a thunderbird, how far will my £3k go towards a 70s bird?

as in what are the ballpark prices?

I know when it comes to it I will do my own research but time is pretty tight at the moment so coming here for a rough idea please?
cheers

Here's a couple of poolside shots of builds I finished some time ago, I just forgot to share these at the time.

that tobacco burst is even nicer on the back as it is on the front

The Bass Zone / buying a bass as an investment
« on: February 28, 2023, 11:12:18 AM »
I am about to inherit a bit of Money, not silly money but enough that I can drop £3K ona bass. the money is currently in the form of Krugerands in a bank vault. My Wife very much wants to leave it there. being as how gold never goes down in value over long terms, even if it doesnt perform as well over the short term as other investments. so my question really is this
is there a vintage bass that I can buy at that price point that will perform similar to than gold (fingers crossed) in terms of an investment ? tbh I can probably swing it even at parity with gold.

there are considerable mental health benefits for having a thunderbird in the loft that I know I can play whenever I want to as opposed to knowing I have bullion in a bank

so is it doable or is it a pipedream?

All just bashed to smithereens at break neck speed.

I think Neil Murray is (too much of) a sweet guy who does not want to speak badly about his late bandmate.
But I can't imagine he really enjoyed playing with Cozy Powell who left no room for any playful part whatsoever.

And you're right about Colin Hodgkinson. At that 1983 concert in Germany he had no clue what to do. The entire band was sloppy as hell.

read all that with great interest, I'm sure if I was to listen now I'd agree with you

, but 13 year old me, at his first real concert on the Slide it in Tour thought they were all just immense and amazing

Never quite understood what keeps Vivian Campbell in Def Leppard so long. Doomed to forever playing second fiddle.

I toured with them in the early noughties, he has to play all Steve Clark's parts note for note, the only time he's allowed off the leash is the last 8 bars of Love bites, in a 7 month tour I don't think he ever played the same thing twice.

Ive told this story before , the rest of the band don't soundcheck, their techs  line check, then Vivian comes on the stage and uses the whole alloted time to play the most amazing slow blues just for the hell of it.

easily the second best guitarist Ive worked with.

I've heard the new album is good.  Just my personal opinion, but I've always felt Def Leppard was a little underrated.  There seems to be a second-tier category they're boxed into.

I found the opposite. here in blighty they're not really taken seriously, but in america people literally say Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Def Leppard.

I use TE Connectivity gold-plated aircraft-grade connectors (204351-1 and 204370-2) crimped in place and color-coded with shrink-wrap. The resulting connector is nearly as slender as the wires alone and can be fished through typical pickup wire channels with no issues.

Thank you

what do you use for your quick connect connectors?

I've been using the hard drive  power connectors salvaged from old pcs but they're pretty bulky so i have to route out a little cavity to accommodate them under the pickup

I've thought about using minijack plugs and trailing sockets but what ill save in girth I'll lose in length

i really like that headstock with the J body, when you pictured it on its own it was Meh but it works really well with the body. close enough to 7ender to look right with the body but different enough to have its own identity without looking like the type of clone that is just different enough to avoid a lawsuit. its a very fine line to tread and its the only headstock i've noticed that pulls it off.
im not a fan of p/j shapes but that headstock makes it the closest ive come to appreciating it.

They never did the track, but an 80ies act like The Sisters of Mercy would have done a better job with it I think.

They actually did, it was a staple of their early live set.

the sisters actually started out as a cover band, their whole schtick was to do ridiculously overblown ironic versions of oft covered songs,

some of us think that was when they were at their best
