The Outpost Cafe / Song Suggestions Please?
« on: November 14, 2015, 03:08:37 PM »
Looking for some new songs to use with the autistic kids I coach, hoping you guys can come up with some suggestions

I need some more of what i call three chord wonders, the kind of thing where the chorus and verse are the same progression,  they don't have to be just three chords but do need to be major chords so they can be played on a barred open e tuned guitar.

the best one I use is Sweet home Alabama, but also Hit the Road jack, the Passenger, Twist and Shout and All along the Watchtower(played with A major rather than Minor)

I know there are more out there but struggling to come up with them

cheers

The Outpost Cafe / First real bass playing gig in 2 decades !
« on: November 14, 2015, 02:56:10 PM »
So yesterday i played my first gig as a musician in 20 odd years,

i've filled in on drums or bass or guitar with the kids I coach at school shows, but that doesn't count as the focus is on them , not me. yesterday at college we had a dress rehearsal for our first assesed performance, we had to play two songs in front of our whole year, was odd to feel pre gig nerves again, but massively fun to rock out again

So, in an attempt to get paid properly for what i do , i am going to try and become certified as a Music Therapist.

Unfortunately the music therapy qualifications are all MA level and I left school with no qualification  so I have a long road ahead.

The first step is an A level equivalent course, To ease myself back in to academia I figured I'd do something that I enjoy and won't be too challenging, so i have started a level3 certificate in Music performance.
It tickles me no end to refer to it as an NVQ in Bass Guitar. Its really weird being in a class full of kids and  I'm older than all of the teachers, but its quite invigorating performing with people that are fresh and unjaded. Though I can hear the laughter in my head of the Roadie Brethren when I'm sitting there being taught how to coil a cable.

anyhoo, I have my first assignment and I thought it might raise a chuckle with you guys. I have to write 1000 words on:

       Your instrument and its Parts
Critique your own instrument and associated equipment with regard to effective, safe operation and current selection.
     Include the following:
            How does your instrument work?
What are the integral parts to your instrument?
             Detail routine maintenance undertaken.
Give some examples of makes, models and associated equipment.
Put together a “tech spec” for your perfect equipment set up, referencing personal and creative needs.
What are the Health & Safety concerns relating to your instrument

Hell I could do a thousand words just on part 5 alone

Always like the look of punk rock sticker covered guitars, but never saw enough stickers that grabbed me,
whilst making note markers for the beginners guitars for school it struck me that I can now make my own stickers

The Outpost Cafe / David Gilmour Solo tour, Highly recomended
« on: September 04, 2015, 12:41:12 PM »
Ive just done 2 days spot operating on production rehearsals for David Gilmour's upcoming solo tour,  really pleasantly surprised at how good it is, If you're a Pink Floyd fan I'd highly recommend it

Ive seen Floyd in various incarnations and fragments before and they are obviously  epic but I've really enjoyed the slightly stripped back and almost jazzy arrangements of old familiar songs. Lots of slide guitar, lots of sax from a really deft backing band.

on a professional note the light and video show is really good , not a huge rig but the range that they get out of it  is impressive and some of the onscreen animation is both beautiful and haunting

Looking forward to the first show with an audience tomorrow

Ive had a squire P-bass donated that has a sheared truss rod. Ive looked into how to fix it and it seems way too hardcore for what it's worth,

The action as fixed is not crazy high, just a bit too high to be comfortable, I  am wondering is whether i can get some use out of it by making it fretless? it seems to me that if there were no frets to buzz I could get the action way lower at the bridge end to compensate for the TR not moving. I realise it wont be an amazing fretless but it might be ok to give my students something different  to make a racket with.

Thoughts?

Hi Guys,
I'm fundraising to create a noisy room at the school for autistic kids where I work. Im gonna shave my beard off and am letting the public decide how its gonna be by auctioning off votes

If you donate, I look like a dick :)

p.s. please dont vote for "semi skimmed" the kids are going bananas for that one and I'm already regretting putting it on the list
