The Outpost Cafe / Lemmy's equipment
« on: August 30, 2017, 03:50:34 AM »
On a recent load in I noticed a bunch of monitors marked Motorhead (it was some pop band) when I remarked on it to the touring guy he told me that the PA company had inherited them by dint of being the PA company on the last tour. apparently Lemmy had no will so all his equipment is wherever it was left.
makes you wonder what will happen to his basses ?

The Bass Zone / college has thrown me a curve ball
« on: September 16, 2016, 04:48:27 PM »
I have a module this term called Sessioning, aimed at preparation for working in a covers band or as a session musician. we basically have to play what were told, with who we are told and to perform them as close to the originals as possible.
I have been assigned the genre Classic Rock. we have to perform 25 minutes of music which has to include 3 from the following list.
white Room, black dog, You shook me all night long, Crosstown traffic, Pinball Wizard, Barracuda, Cherry bomb, Purple Rain, The Chain, Piece of my heart, Born to be Wild, My Sharona, she sells sanctuary and More than a Feeling.
I love these songs but the thought of playing slavish copies breaks my heart.

I am all about the cover version, the music I listen to most these days is loungecore and stuff like Hellsongs and Nouvelle vague, dread zeppelin and Beatallica.

I was really looking forward to some radical reworkings, but i have been told specifically that as someone who was responsible for a Glam Rock version of Spice up your Life and a punk version of Backstreet's Back in previous modules that the tutors are looking for me to absolutely not stamp any part of myself into these versions

I completely understand the rationale behind the module, and how doing it will be immensely good for me as a bass player, but it really sucks donkeys.

so i guess the question is... which of these will be most fun to play considering I'm not allowed off piste at all?

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / wiring questions
« on: August 21, 2016, 04:38:25 AM »
does the wire used to connect components in a bass have to be stuff that's sold as guitar hookup wire?

for instance I have a load of good quality  svhs cables which is 4 core high grade video signal cable, is there any reason I cant use that? I know from my video days the adage was always "you can use video cable for audio but you cant use audio cable for  video" which to me implies that the quality is better, or is it a resistance thing?

If not is there any other type of cable that can be cannibalized to use as hookup wire? I have drawers full of old cables of every type but I'm out of hookup wire on a project I want to get moving on

second question, the ground  from the bridge normally gets soldered to the base of the nearest pot, if the output jack is nearer could it be connected to the ground of that instead?

cheers

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / buzz that I cant kill
« on: May 14, 2016, 12:55:08 PM »
I have a project bass that has developed a buzz, its driving me mad,
Ive taken it all apart and checked all the connections and nothing is loose, Ive replaced  the volume pot with a new cts one (the only control currently on it) and swapped pickups and it's still there!
If the buzz reduces by about half when I touch the bridge or control plate does that mean something is touching that shouldn't be , or something not connected that should?

Help!

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / guitar pickup in bass
« on: November 28, 2015, 07:43:44 AM »
I was daydreaming about giving my frankentele bass a bit of snarl by putting a jazz pickup close the bridge, but  it occured to me that (a) i dont have a jazz pickup and (b) i have a handful of guitar pickups lying around
there has been a few mentions of gibson using guitar pickups on basses, and I wondered if anyone had anything to say about sticking a strat single coil  on a bass?

The Bass Zone / 3 string bass
« on: November 14, 2015, 04:06:24 PM »
Thought I'd share this recent project

one of my students is a young lad  who has muscular dystrophy. He has been playing a barred  open tuned guitar for a while and has a wicked sense of rhythm. But he wanted to play bass, and specifically wanted to play funk. Unfortunately his left hand is neither strong nor dexterous enough for him to use anything other than bar with his index finger (using his middle finger for extra strength)

So i came up with this, the DDD bass, using the 3/4 scale Samick that I had  repaired the snapped neck on.

it works well, he can do the octave pop and generally funk out on it, his right hand is much more dexterous and he can do double fingering and has even started to slap

its tuned D1 D2 D3 , we tried DAD for the fifth, but he prefers it like this

obviously Ive had a go  and its definitely the oddest tuning I have ever played on, but its actually a real bag of fun
