The Outpost Cafe / Lyrics to Rock Songs
« on: January 03, 2019, 10:51:54 AM »
I'm not even going to comment on any of the rest of this article.  There may be a few valid comments among those that are invalid.  However, beginning an article by thinking that John Lennon wrote :"I Saw Her Standing There" is probably not the best way to begin.  Why would it be "Ill-advised" for Paul McCartney, a 19 year old at the time, to write a song about a 17 year old girl.  Someone the same age as his girlfriend at that time?  And if you think that's bad, this critic is really unimpressed with Chuck Berry and the Stones, etc.  I bet she also hates "Baby It's Cold Outside."  We need to have another old-fashioned record and book burning.  Let's move closer to "Fahrenheit 451."  Destroy the good along with the bad in the process.  Yes, throughout time a lot of very questionable song lyrics have been written.  But legislating morality and dictating to people what songs they should or should not listen to hardly seems very 1st Amendment-like to me.  I'm not necessarily digging the new Puritanism.

The Outpost Cafe / Re: Why Mainstream Rock Sucked in 2018

Mostly metal bands there. Not the same territory covered by Rolling Stone. Mostly not what I'd call mainstream rock, which was the subject of the RS article.

There are plenty of good bands with small but dedicated followings. You have to look a bit to find what you like.

I was noticing that, especially as I kept scrolling down looking at those bands.  However, I wasn't able to see everything because of computer issues.  I was getting the point, though, that those were metal bands--many of which I wasn't very familiar with.

Here is an article objecting to the "Rolling Stone" article.

In other related news, it's likely that Uranus, Jupiter and Neptune once had rings like Saturn long ago.  Plus, Saturn's rings will probably be gone, too, in 100 million years or so.

All I can add is that Weird Al's bizarre appearance in the Weezer cover of "Africa" is enough to make you never want to watch any video ever again.  That is said more in sincerity than jest.

Didnt read the article yet, but mainstream rock has sucked a lot more in the previous 2 decades than it has in the last year or two. Theres actually been some good stuff on the radio; its starting to suck less. .... so to answer the titular question, because its still coming out da slump.

He actually ends up on a more positive note than the title would indicate, but that doesn't come across until the last paragraph.  I thought it was a well-written article--better than most of this kind, IMO.

I think DW's preferences run to skimpier shorts...

Skimpy shorts would have been the only thing that could have salvaged that.  This place may be going down fast.   :o

I've got some opportunities to get some good deals on several other basses right now.  But I can't stop thinking about this particular Eastwood bass.  I've wanted a Newport for a long time, though.  Preferably an actual Epi one, but this one might do the job.

Kind of like having an EB-0 and not having an EB-0 at the same time.  I once commented that I really liked the look of the batwing headstock on the Newport  Uwe said it may look good but was easily cracked  Maybe the Eastwood won't have that problem, but who knows.

I like his use of the term "Fuddy Duddy Squad."  That could also be used to describe lots of other people objecting to various things that's none of their business.

I'm not okay with death and taxes either

Not a fan of either, and new taxes are becoming more of a pain than ever before.  :o

A perfectly good Gibson Triumph bass is not a car wreck that is being dismantled in the scrapyard as a donor for parts.

The only reason to part this bass out is money, money money.
It spells greed and ignorance.
And I'm not okay with that.

The saying goes that nothing is certain but death and taxes.  But I think we could easily add greed and ignorance to that.
