I don't know Dutch, but they seem to be going over his accomplishments and, obviously, giving him some kind of award.

Bass Amps & Effects / The History of Kustom Amps

It is often said that they sounded awful, but looked cool and were durable.  But there were some famous artists who played Kustoms.  Just maybe not much anymore.

The Outpost Cafe / The Beatles' Revolver Box Set
« on: October 30, 2022, 10:12:06 PM »
I just got this yesterday.  I'm still not completely finished listening to it.  This is the 5 CD box set.  There are several variations, including a 2 CD set.  This is good, but simply not worth over $100.  I can compare this purchase to other recent ones I've made.  The Slade recent 5 CD release was only $43.  The Allman Brothers 5 CD set "Trouble No More" which I got in February is still only $50, although it went up slightly since I got it.  I actually got more fulfillment buying the James Gang live CD several months ago than buying this Beatles CD set.  In that case, I had been on a search for years to find that particular CD.  So I guess that's a factor.  I'm not trying, of course, to compare Slade, the James Gang and the Allman Brothers to the Beatles, although it's possible a case could actually be made for the Allman Brothers.  BTW, I don't know how much the Revolver 2 CD set is.  It may be worth whatever they're charging, though.  As for the way the remixed Revolver sounds, I wasn't planning on doing an actual review.  Suffice it to say, I was disappointed from the first song.  "Taxman" started off sounding trebly with not a major improvement on the sound of the vocals.  I was expecting better.  Also, judging on what I had been reading about it, I was expecting a fuller and deeper bass sound.  It's not bad, but definitely not worth paying $100.  I was fine with the prices of all the other CDs mentioned here, but not with this one.  Also, I'm not very interested in the outtakes people are raving about.  I don't care that Yellow Submarine started out as a depressing song and then evolved.  What's really depressing is buying this overpriced Revolver CD set.

The Outpost Cafe / When Band Members Get Fired
« on: August 29, 2022, 04:07:25 PM »
My exposure to Evanescence's music goes back to their first two albums.  I was especially interested in the second album--The Open Door.  I learned the bass to that and was going to teach it to a friend's roommate who was trying to learn bass.  However, once we started, he said he wanted to learn to play like Mike Mills.  I told him I could teach him stuff like Losing My Religion, but there was no way I could teach anyone how to play bass like Mike Mills.  So we didn't get too far.  I didn't really care very much because I was only doing this for a friend who was always asking way too much from me.

As for Evanescence, when I heard their next album, their 2011 album, that didn't get my attention at all.  I thought is was pretty uninteresting compared to the first two albums.  I didn't keep up with Evanescence's music at all through the years.  I had heard they got a female guitarist, but I barely knew anything about her.

Flash forward to the present day.  Recently, I found out that that female guitarist Jen Majura got fired from the band for no apparent reason.  It all struck me as very odd since no one would provide any details.  I read about it, I watched videos and especially over the past week I've watched a lot of Jen's videos.  Besides playing guitar, she also sings in what mostly look like side projects with Jen doing vocals to cover songs.

My reaction to all of this is I think Jen got a raw deal.  She was packing and getting ready for their next tour which started in two weeks.  She got a call from management which told her she was being kicked out of the band.  Evanescence has not provided any reasons.  Except Amy Lee has commented that "Sometimes you just have to listen to the universe."

The bassist is switching to lead guitar, effectively being the one who directly replaces Jen.  He is being replaced by Emma Anzai, bassist for Sick Puppies.  This part I can understand.  Emma is good.  But Jen is also good on lead guitar.  She shouldn't have to leave.  Something is definitely rotten in the state of Denmark and nobody is talking.

The Outpost Cafe / James Gang's Debt to The Who
« on: July 26, 2022, 03:35:29 AM »
Joe Walsh's gratitude toward Pete Townshend appears to be genuine.  By coincidence I also recently completed my James Gang CD collection.  Also, by coincidence I ran across another unrelated Joe Walsh article today.  Walsh had been attempting to learn the guitar to "And Your Bird Can Sing."  Ringo walked in and told him one guitar couldn't do it.  That George and Paul had both played guitar on that song.

I wasn't interested in everybody he discussed, but some of them such as Hendrix and Bolin, definitely yes.

Note:

Speaking of Tommy Bolin, I've recently been listening to the 1969 Zephyr album with Tommy Bolin.  Of course, I liked Bolin.  But I'm not a big fan of Zephyr's singer who sounded way too much like Janis Joplin for my taste.  I just never much liked the Janis Joplin sound.  However, if given the choice, I would choose Candy Givens over Janis Joplin, although at least to my ears, they sound kind of similar.  I would have been interested in hearing the Zephyr performance when they opened up for Jimi Hendrix at the Denver Pop Festival.  I mentioned this on another thread once before.  But every bootleg I've heard of Hendrix is of low quality and I've never bothered with them..

The Bass Zone / The Bass on Abbey Road
« on: April 29, 2022, 10:41:00 PM »
If you're interested in the bass on Abbey Road, here it is.  How accurate the writer of this article is, I'm not sure.  He is obviously not a bassist, but apparently is some kind of musician.  Most likely a guitarist.  He also doesn't seem to be aware that George Harrison played bass on a few of the Abbey Road tracks.  Still, I found the article worth reading and I'm going to listen to all those isolated tracks the first chance I get (which will probably be soon.)

Gibson Basses / Young Bands & Gibson
« on: April 26, 2022, 10:18:50 PM »
I was going to post this under the guitars section.  But then no one would see it.  Also, Gene Simmons is briefly mentioned in the video.  So that makes it at least a little about basses, too and not just guitars.

What I'm wondering is this:  Are all the people who think Fender is mostly for young people aware of the fact that Fenders have been played since the dawn of time?  Also, labeling Gibson as mostly for boomers is too much of a generalization.

Maybe the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should just go ahead and call it quits?  Each year it moves closer to making a mockery of rock music.
