That is a 60's Hofner 185 "Artiste" bass with replacement bridge (the original tailpiece was left on) and non-original pickups.

It's a short-scale Kay K-20B, made in Taiwan. Bolt-on construction.

And here's a vid if you're still interested (demo starts at 0:47 with the neck pickup):

The tone is still very hifi, just not so electric sounding. Imagine an Alembic with Ken Smith's pickups and preamp and you're mostly there. (...) It really felt like a big ukelele. The pictures make the body look much larger than it is. It's about the same size as a Hofner Beatle Bass, just a smidge bigger.
Thanks. GAS is gone.

I have it on my watch list. What do you figure is a good price for a 20/20?

I know many dislike the shape but I think they look awesome. Always have (well since the 1987 catalog anyway).

Uwe, in the Bert Kaempfert video, 2:23-2:31, you can see two bass players, one playing fingerstyle, the other (Fender J) with a pick.

Rickenbacker Basses / Re: Ric Bass Necks ??

From the 1975 servicing manual:

"To straighten the neck, remove the nameplate on the head of the instrument. Then, with the left hand holding the neck on the fret side of the nut (NEVER hold the head of the guitar) and the right hand holding the other end of the neck, between the 15th and 21st frets, straighten out the neck by carefully bending across the knee. A second person holding the Rickenbacker nut driver can then adjust the reinforcing rods as required. It is important that the neck is only bent and adjusted in this fashion a little at a time (never bend more than 16th at a time). If necessary repeat this procedure until the neck is straight."
