Fender Basses / What happened here

I spend days on eBay and then someone lowballs an original 1979 Precision and scores for $700

Oh well I did score a 1970 EB-0L for $480 so I can't complain, but I still feel like I want to.

Fender Basses / New Squier Paranormal Rascal bass
« on: May 02, 2023, 10:23:10 AM »
The 3 lipstick tube pickups of the Fender model from 10 years ago now replaced with two Tele Bass MkII "wide range humbuckers" in the Squier version, the cool Guild bridge/tailpiece is replaced with a Mustang unit and there is a standard pickup selector switch instead of a lever. $450-500 street.

I liked the old Rascal a lot - a 30" bass that unlike Mustangs/Musicmasters/Broncos doesn't feel like a toy, and has the nut exactly where your hand remembers it from years of playing 34" Fenders.

Transition J with lollipops and bound/dots neck. This thing with the chrome covers will look stellar.

In my experience – best year for J's (for P's it's 1969 imho).

$9,826 BIN, free shipping from Japan. A good deal, I think.

Fender Basses / Why is the Mustang bass considered "offset contour"?

Either the waist is symmetrical just like a Precision bass, or I've gone blind.

Other Bass Brands / Parts bass

So out of boredom I took some parts that were laying around the house, made a relic J as a gift for my son and a P for myself. MJT alder body, Allparts neck, Tonerider pickup, and of course my favorite guard - 5-ply b/w/b/w/b. When Lavaguards resume production I might get a tort.

Looks like a clever idea. Fits J-width necks only. For $49.90 I might give it a try.

Fender Basses / 74-75 PRINTED tort guards
« on: March 04, 2023, 03:49:27 PM »
So nothing made today looks remotely like vintage Fender tort. Most aftermarket tort guards are wrong and pretty ugly, too brown or too red, including what Fender puts on their Custom Shop basses. Some Spitfire torts are nice - especially what they call Vintage Burgundy - but are very expensive.

Why not replicate Fender's last tort guards before switching to b/w/b - the printed guards they used in 74/75? They are easily identifiable by the symmetry line(s) somewhere in the pattern and up close you can see actual pixels, but they still looked much better than what Fender and other manufacturers offer today.

I like the design. Fenderish without being a copy, and I like the EQ sliders. Not cheap though.

The Bass Zone / 46 years later
« on: February 05, 2023, 12:19:21 PM »
In 1977, when I was 15 years old, my parents bought me a MIJ Prima branded Jazz knockoff with weird tele-like pickups. This was my 3rd bass (before it I had a Hofner 500/1 and a Klira Rio), and I immediately peeled off the Prima sticker and made a crude Fender decal (actually I made two, the second try was nicer). Sold it in 1981 to buy a Peavey T40, my first decent bass.

Fast forward to yesterday, the bass pops up in Facebook Marketplace, for $320. I immediately recognized it.

So I bought it... again, 46 years later.

Fender Basses / Sunburst Musicmaster

A refin of course, but I must say this little bass looks surprisingly nice in sunburst and tort. I don't recall seeing one in sunburst before.
