Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / LPB-1, special owners Help!
« on: September 10, 2013, 12:43:22 PM »
So I've got a custom build in the works with a local builder, Chris Stambaugh. It will be inspired by a Gibson LPB-1 Les Paul bass but with a single t-bird pickup in the customary T-bird II location.
My quandary is that I don't have a LP special to guide Chris in how to shape the body.
Can anybody out there provide me with a tracing and measurement of the depth of the body so this project can come to fruition?
It will be a limed mahogany finish aka TV yellow finish and should look pretty cool when it's completed.
I can offer reasonable compensation for any volunteers. Also looking for a proper 60's T-bird II wiring schematic for the pots and cap.

Hey Gang. Have you seen Dave Grohl's sound city documentary?
Anybody know what kind of bass Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age was playing with Trent Reznor?
It sounded like a Gibson but I think it was an Ibanez hollowbody.

Gibson Basses / Tbird with sunburst headstock & no serial#

I thought this bird would be worth discussion here.

If the headstock is original, wouldn't the serial number be visible?

Great playing from Billy Cox on the People, Hell and Angels album by Jimi Hendrix. I've provided a link with further playing notes.
Have a great Earth Day!

Tragic events at the Boston marathon yesterday. Praying no one here was directly effected. Hope everyone will focus on loving each other so we can make this world a better place.

Had one installed on the evertilt bridge on my EB1 and now I have much better and more even response across all strings. It's also much easier to tune the E string.
It took a little work to make it fit but Kevin Chubbuck did a great job installing it. Here's his blog along with some great photos of the process and my EB1.

Sounds great played on a EBO or EB1 or similar bass. Don't forget to bend the blue notes. Enjoy!

Sorry to learn of the passing of this legendary musician. He was a great ambassador of the power of music and it's ability to transcend politics even at the height of the cold war.

New Brown Guild Bass Day!
Found this B-301 at Boston Guitar Works near my house. Decided to swap out my G&L SB1 for it. In the end I just couldn't bond with the mfd pickup and didn't like the way the controls functioned. The Guild on the other hand was love at first sight/ sound. Very responsive full range pickup. Lots of bite and plenty of low end. Also I couldn't resist all the lovely mahogany. and pics away...

and the happy family,

one minor issue is there appears to be a mod to the star wheel tilt adjuster replaced by a screw, but it's an easy fix if need be and the bridge is functional as is otherwise I am delighted with the condition of this late 70's bass

Gibson Basses / EB1 capacitor
« on: February 09, 2013, 10:52:31 AM »
Got buried in snow here in NH so figured it was a good time to ask around about my EB1's capacitor.
It looks like this outside my window

here's brown Betty

here's the cap

My query, does the .033 cap look stock? If not is there a better cap for this bass? Thanks, Ari  :)
