Fender Basses / Re: Ever seen a black Special?

I have a dead preamp board in my graveyard somewhere. The board mounted pots were junky. I yanked it and went passive. Then I dumped it. I really disliked maple board with painted headstock. Looked odd.

Designed by chiropractors.  There was at least one clear headstock and the brown one that John Deacon had. Looks dang spiffy in black w rosewood.

Gibson Basses / Gibson Bass pick up deal?
« on: January 14, 2023, 05:16:36 PM »
Listed as Grabber. Says Ripper. But seems like neither.  Maybe a deal.

I used to gig with them quite a bit, but there is an inherent flaw in their design.  The higher the tension, the greater the issue of slippage. The post itself will be incrementally pulled out of contact with the tuning gear with the greater the tension. So if you use a beefy set of flats - most people did back then - tuning will be a serious issue.  Any attempt at using long scale strings cut down will definitely be a nightmare.  If you take one apart - and I took several apart - you can physically create the issue to see how it happens.  A good fresh set of Roto short scales and you will not have much of a problem.  GHS, or such stuff, and you can tune it and have the string go slack in a second.

The Outpost Cafe / Re: The Beatles' Revolver Box Set
« on: October 31, 2022, 06:03:13 PM »
I am a sucker for this stuff, but also realistic about what it is.  I will buy the box o' LPs or CDs - or both.  I bought the Let It Be set and pretty much just listened to the Glynn Johns Get Back disc.  Revolver is a different animal though, so I will give everything a listen, and probably be more into it as it was a more impressive disc than most. Especially from a bass standpoint. And when you compare it to most discs released that year it was an impressive work. But realistically, I can't imagine this remix is THAT better than the version from a few years ago, or the mono version from a few years ago. I would suspect it a better mix than the 80s CD version, but when you can buy that for fifty cents to a buck, how bad can that be?  I guess Yoko needs our money.

Fender Basses / Re: Bass VI

I owned an original Bass VI and got to play one of the Squier versions a few years ago. I was very impressed with how close it was to the oldie. About the only substantial differences were the finish quality, the truss at the headstock (better) and mind did not have binding and blocks so it had a different feel to the neck.  But the overall playability, sound and weight were close enough to make me wish I had popped for the Squier.

I used a felt bass pick when I started decades ago. It was like the uke picks but twice as thick.  That was an old school thing even back then. With flats it took away the clunk click that a guitar pick gave you, but what a freaking mess. Felt fuzzy dust everywhere. It was fun that it looked like a rug pad - gray and colored specks in it.  Blah.

I like my Mastersounds lps with Monk on them.

People are moving everything.  Cooped up covid reaction maybe but between people cleaning out the closets and batty demand for anything reasonable, you can see all manner of misinformation and lunacy. And anytime inflation hits people in the face, you can expect the price tag to be a way to recoup some of the economic sting. We live in interesting times.

Almost all the CB decals show up on the all gold bass. The 82 dots and binding basses almost always have S8 decals.

Most Hendrix fans find Isle of Wight disturbing.  The whole not giving a shit vibe comes through. I remember the first time I heard it. I love it because of how trashy it was.
