Other Bass Brands / Re: The worlds most dangerous Thunderbird
« on: August 14, 2018, 08:42:13 AM »
Yeah......zombie thread. I know.

But I just ran across it and figured I'd correct some assumtions on this ESP/Edwards TBird.

Edwards is one of ESP's brands it uses mainly for the Japan market for mainly mid-level instruments.
This particular Edwards model is a bolt-on version of the ESP Custom Shop signature basses that a bass player named Ryugi Kosaka used, in the Japanese "visual kei" band (Jap version of glam rock) Fanatic Crisis. Those guys had a dozen albums out between 1992-2005 and around 30 singles.

So, yeah, the bass is a bit "odd" but IMO very dead on for the image and type of music that band played. It is commonly referred to as a "Ryugi Bass" in Japan. I've seen four of the Edwards ones for sale used over the last few years, all bolt-ons. Plus I saw one of Ryugi's personal ESP Custom Shop ones on Ishabishi or one of those other sites around a year back. I'm not sure if his are set neck or neck thru. I'm thinking setneck because of how long the headstock is and a neck thru blank would be crazy long.

Anyway....I have two other ESP Custom Shop TBirds in my collection, both with rare Gibson "lawsuit" headstocks. So, I was tempted to buy the Ryugi one on Ishabishi but hesitated long enough for someone else to grab it. It was sort of the same burst color as the Edwards ones but non bolt-on. So, when THIS all-silver one (fretboard too!) popped up FS, that was cool enough for me to go for it.

So yeah, the headstock and odd control layput isn't for everyone. But if you consider it is designed for a wacky Japanese glam rock band, you sort of can relate to the design. Plus I'm a fan of fingerboards painted the same color as the body/neck, like Ric sometimes did. ESP's top end Custom Shop builds are actually quite nice. My black TBird was ordered by guitarist Charlie Sexton, thru his endorser account, back in the 80s for his then bassist. It's very 70s Gibson-ish, except for the slightly wider nut width. I have a blue circa 2000 one that is a near exact copy of a Gibson TBird, with the same 1.5" nut width....but the 60s big headstock has a unique, very cool 3D "beak" on the tip.

Anyway....that's the scoop on these weird looking ESP Ryugi TBirds...Pic of the silver one I recently bought.

Funco should pay the licensing fees and then have all their employees have their kids choke on pieces of the guitars and sue the crap out of Gibson for it. 🤡🤡

So......Gibson will just rerelease some old models in very limited numbers, add a special decal on the back....and likely charge double?

Expensive decals.

....but far better than Henry trying to design more new "innovative" models.

I'm still waiting for them to decide that these prototypes should become a. New model, after 40 years. Better than the RoboGuitars 🤡

Only the 1963 Thunderbirds had a full maho neck, they introduced walnut in 1964. The all maho neck really isn't a quality characteristic, it costs more to do the nine-ply process and it makes sense from a stability prerspective.

I have a faded black one-off from 2006 that - miraculously - has a full maho neck, I guess they couldn't be bothered to find a nine-ply piece of wood in that one singular case. Does it sound different to my other Birds? Not a bit.

Hey Uwe......by "full mahogany neck" on the 1963 Thunderbird....do you mean a one-piece neck-thru?

Or was it maybe a two-piece?

Only asking because I own a 1963 Firebird and those real early ones were a two-piece mahogany neck-thru before they went to the 9-piece construction.

I really liked Greg Allman's voice and writing more than the other white Southern R&B/Soul guys like Leon Russell and Dr John, etc.

I never really "got" the  her thing. Must've been drugs or he totally lost his way after Greg and Berry died and then the ABB broke up. Just a weird period.

A friend of mine from decades ago ended up managing the ABB from the 80s until the end. I'm sure it was no small chore.

I accidentally woke Greg up once. I had to do something with Allen Woody and called before noon where the band was....got Greg by accident. You would never think that morning voice could ever sing a note.

RIP, man.

Man, that is the one shape that I just cannot get used to. I had a couple flying V's.....a 6-string and an 8-string bass.....looked cool as hell but I just could not get used to playing them.

But I am OK with my mini Kubicki V's...just can't handle the full size ones.

Gibson Basses / Re: Alan Barry's doubleneck
« on: April 21, 2017, 09:12:23 AM »

ALL the Hamer doublenecks I have had or seen pit the 4-string bass on the bottom.

The top was always the odd neck.....guitar, fretless bass or 8/12-string bass.

I prefer the bass on the bottom.

THAT SAID.......

A similar question regarding a Two bass neck doubleneck.  I have the only Kubicki doubleneck made. I also have a couple spare necks, so I can configure it a few ways.

I have four necks.....two fretless and two fretted. Also, either 32" scale with the drop D lever or straight 34".

HOW would you guys configure it for it to be the most useful?

I am leaning toward a Fretted Drop D as the top neck because I like my bass higher if I slap/pop and Kubickis are great for that.....and a 34" fretless on the bottom.

Opinions?

Yeah, that bass resurfaced up near my old stomping ground in a music store near Rochester, NY. I called but had missed it by days.

Here are some color pics of it when near new....and one as it was when resurfaced.

My 1965 Ric 4005' I think, is the only other factory Blue Boy bass....although it is a factory refin.

BTW.....What is that ugly bass he in playing in the photo above?

Looks like a combination of every favorite aspect of basses he had played over the years, slapped onto  one bass.

Sad. One of the guys I truly admired. Loved his tone and how well he could play while singing lead.

Saw him in U.K. And also on his solo acoustic tour. Nice guy.

I thought he was an improvement in King Crimson over Greg Lake, mainly his vocal tone.

Definitely left his mark.

Man, there have sure been a lot of top bassists dead over the last 12 months or so.
