Gibson Basses / 1957 Gibson EB-1 - Mod Question [Pic Link Update]
« on: October 22, 2019, 06:56:15 PM »
Group,

I assume the general consensus about this, but figured I would put it out there...

I have a 1957 Gibson EB-1 that I am considering refinishing like Jack Bruce's EB-1.

I have all the original parts with the exception of;
*Pickguard
*Control Cover
*Input Jack Plate
*Truss Rod Cover

The body is well worn, it also is without a broken headstock.

So the mod would include; removing the finish and giving it a cherry finish, installing different tuners (enlarging the tuner holes) and adding a Schaller bridge.

Thoughts...

Fender Basses / Fender Telecaster Bass (early 70's) Pots
« on: February 02, 2016, 10:38:13 AM »

Group,

I have a 1972 Fender Telecaster Bass that I bought as parts and need to know what rating the pots should be.

Are both Volume & Tone rated at 250K?
...and what is the tone cap value?

Ideally would like to use Fender parts... new is fine, not hung up on vintage or NOS.

Thanks in advance!

Group,

Does anyone have information on the plastic pickup spacer/ring that was sandwiched between the neck pickup cover and the body? Gibson started using them in 1967?
...NOT the plastic surround Gibson started using in 1970.

Seen here...

Are these for sale anywhere?

Thanks!

Gibson Basses / Gibson EB-2 - Baritone Circuit Question
« on: October 30, 2015, 11:11:32 AM »

Group,

I have a 1959 Gibson EB-2 with some of the potting material removed from the Baritone Circuit under the bridge.
...I would like to fill it back in, what exactly did Gibson use? ...it's almost like a wax material.

Thanks!

Fender Basses / 1971 Fender Telecaster Bass - Color Options
« on: June 01, 2015, 06:24:28 AM »

Group...

Does anyone know what color options were used on 1971 Fender Telecaster Basses?

...I have a '71 body that was stripped down and I would like to have it painted to the vintage color options and spec.

Thank you!

Group...

I have had my white NR Bach Thunderbird striped down and prepped for paint.
Either going with Cardinal or Fiesta Red.
My guess from this picture is that Entwistle's bass is closer to Fiesta Red... your thoughts?

2 Questions...
Can anyone tell me the best place to get this paint?
What is the best color primer to use under Red? (White? Grey?)

Thank you!
Curt

I have an Epiphone Elitist Thunderbird that I have decided to remove the 3 point bridge and install a 2 Piece Bridge and Tail Piece.

Could someone tell me the dimension from the "Nut to the Center of the Bridge" and then from the "Nut to the Center of the Tail Piece" (center of the screws).

Thanks, I appreciate the assistance!

Hello Group!
Thought I'd share this...

The Feb 2015 issue of Bass Player magazine is a tribute to Jack Bruce.
My Jack Bruce rig that I use for my Cream tribute, "Tales Of Cream", is featured on "Dig My Rig", page 12!

Going to buy a set of HB6 - 3/8'' Ultralite Tuners

What finish best gives it that vintage vibe?

Thanks,

Gibson Basses / 1959 Gibson EB-2 - Parts Question
« on: December 02, 2014, 11:39:02 AM »
Group...

I just picked up a 1959 Gibson EB-2.
...I would like to return it as close to original as possible.

TUNERS:
I had originally thought of returning the EB Banjo tuners...
but the feedback I received from my previous post sounds like I should steer clear.
...Anyone recommend a specific replacement tuner that seem to work best with the least amount of modification?

BRIDGE:
The original bridge was replaced with a late 60's model Gibson two-point Tune-O-Matic bridge.
The original Bar Bridge holes were filled in and re-drilled to fit the wider spacing needed for the Tune-O-Matic.
...Would like to return it back to the Bar Bridge.

PICKUP & BARITONE SWITCH:
There is currently a '62-'65 Chrome pickup cover on it in place of the original Black bakelite.
...Seems like the black bakelite covers I have seen for sale are over $200.00+ on ebay.
The Baritone switch was replaced with a 2 way switch. I see a proper replacement on ebay selling for $14.99

Also in need of a hardshell case... anyone know of any companies making a case that will fit an EB-2?

Thank for any input!
Curt

Gibson Basses / EB Banjo Tuners - Replacements / Replica Tuners
« on: December 01, 2014, 07:49:01 AM »

Hello Group...

Is there currently anyone producing replacement / replica EB Banjo Tuners?
I see that Steinberger makes something similar for guitar, but doesn't appear they do for bass?

I work doing CAD for the Automotive industry and was considering designing and machining a few sets.

Is there maybe another alternative that has been successfully used in place of the original Banjo Tuners?

[Info from www.flyguitars.com]
EB Banjo Tuners
Gibson part number MH-570-P (1965).
Sealfast 12 to 1 ratio, as used on 1950s EB/EB1, and EB2 basses and the melody maker style slap body EB0

Thanks!
Curt

Looking for some opinions regarding refinishing...

I have a 1965 Gibson EB-0, poorly converted to an EB-3...
the bridge pickup hole location is a little off, and one attempt at drilling a pickup lead hole came through the top.
...No, I did not do it.

My plan is to fill the hole back in with a piece of mahogany and reroute the bridge pickup cavity.
I also want to fill in some other holes, dings and dents.

What is the best filler/material for small holes, dings and dents that will not shrink up or cause ghost lines under paint?
I am going to have it refinished in Pelham Blue.

Thanks for your input!
Curt
