Other Bass Brands / Kustom K200 Bass
« on: March 06, 2016, 12:18:10 PM »
I've been gassing for one of theses for years and finally saw one I liked that wasn't teal green or beat to death.  It's trans red and in very good condition with minimal checking.  The bass plays and sounds great.  Nice short scale neck and fantastic pickups.  The 3-way switch gives it a great variable tone with a simple flip.

I can't say enough about the pups.  They are so much better than I expected.  Nice deep low end and plenty of mid and high range output.  I've had numerous vintage basses disappointment with their electronics after owning them.  Mosrite is a good example.  Had two of them and the pups really underperformed in every aspect.  In fact, they sucked.

Anyway,  I love this little guy!  I highly recommend one.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / New DocBass design
« on: February 09, 2016, 06:57:10 AM »
OK, everyone is pretty familiar with the ROCit bass design I've been using now.  I also had Chucker design a second one for me, thinking it would be my solid body model.  I like the design a lot as it has a NR/Jag vibe to it with the lower bottom bout similar to the ROCit design.  I would do this one with a pick guard with controls mounted in it rather than a back control plate (I hate those things).

As much as I love the ROCit design, I think it lends itself best to the semi-hollow application.  I find it just a little too much in size and weight in a solid body application unless I keep it to basswood or some other light weight wood.  It sounds so good as a semi-hollow bass.

Anyway, here's the Galaxy (until Dave tells me some other company has a trademark or something on that name for a bass).  I'm sticking with "space" themes if I can.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Dumb pot question
« on: January 26, 2016, 07:18:55 AM »
I knew that would get your attention!   8)  Actually, I always use CTS pots in my builds.  With my new semi-hollow design, I'm sliding the pots under a hole cut beneath the pup cavity ala the new Guilds rather than through an f-hole.

I was thinking about tolerances and such and realized the mimi-CTS pots would make my life a lot easier during installation.  Anything inherently wrong or kinky with the minis from CTS?  I'm assuming the same high quality as their standard pots or is there something I should know about them?

Just wondering......... ???

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Help me name a DocBass!
« on: December 22, 2015, 07:41:57 AM »
I've decided to make 2 semi-hollow models, one with and one without f-holes.  I decided naming the models would be a fun thing to do.  I was thinking of naming the non-f-hole model after my one of favorite basses, Hofner.  Thinking Sir Paul as well, I'm considering the following names:

* Cavern
* Liverpool
* Hamburg
* Other?

For the f-hole model, I'm not so sure.  Maybe after one of my favorite places or something to make me think of the vintage EB tone:

* Linderhof
* Vienna
* Edinburgh
* Epoch
* Classic
* Antiquity
* Other?

Merry Christmas gang!

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / NR TB project
« on: October 30, 2015, 08:27:13 AM »
Since I got the BillyBo out the door for finishing, I decided to finish the one other hanging project for myself before I build any more "db" basses.  I picked up an NR body cheap awhile back and had an idea for my own short scale TB.  So, here's the first steps toward that end.  It will be a solid color, not yet decided, and will probably have 1 Thunderbucker in it.  That's all I know thus far!

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / DocBass ready to roll
« on: September 11, 2015, 09:06:30 AM »
Finally,  I've had some time to get into the shop and finish something!  This is #3 (1 and 2) will be next up on the bench.  I am so happy with how this turned out.  The fit and finish are really good and the sound is well beyond my expectations.  The TV Jones pup is big and ballsy, it really does make me think of a p bass.  I was worried about the single pup option, but the sound is so full and rich, I'm thrilled with the outcome.   All I have left to do is install the strap buttons and control plate.

I'm working on pricing and how I'm going to sell it.  Either eBay or at the House of Guitars.  They want me to try and sell them at the HOG, but I know they can take a beating with people playing and messing with them.  So, I'm not so sure about that option.  Might try one just to see what happens.  I'm working on a way to capture some audio of the bass.  We'll see how that goes!

Fender Basses / Always wanted one - Bullet bass
« on: August 25, 2015, 07:59:44 AM »
I've always been intrigued by the USA Fender Bullet basses.  Coming in 30 and 34" scale was a great idea they had.  I've had Musicmasters and Mustangs before but I never felt comfortable with the mini body or its design.  I think the Bullet in 30" scale is a nice hybrid between a Mustang and a full size Fender.  So......I've been watching for years and just never jumped on one.  Finally, I decided it was time and got a nice specimen, USA 1981, for a good price.  Can't wait to try it out.  Just can't get over my love of short scales!

Other Bass Brands / Temptation hits me, too!
« on: August 18, 2015, 12:04:59 PM »
I had an H22 years ago, should have kept it.  So, I saw this reissue with one flaw, a very small dent in the side of the neck (an easy fix), I grabbed it for $295.  It will be fun to fix and try out.  A really funky bass and a very accurate reissue except for the tuners.  Nicely done but they were way overpriced when they came out.

The Outpost Cafe / Recent illness
« on: July 21, 2015, 03:48:17 AM »
I've been laying low for five weeks cause I had an unexpected illness.  I ended up in the hospital with an abscess on my liver back in mid June.  No warning, no one can figure out how it happened.  It was the size of my hand when finally detected.  The only clue was a fever for ten days and pain in my gut.  If untreated in time, they are 100% fatal.  So, after eight days in the hospital and being sent home with three drains coming out of my liver I'm finally feeling better.   The drains are out now and I have two more weeks of mega antibiotics to go.  Most of the time I was on morphine or oxycodon and out of it.   So, posting would have been an adventure in delirium.  I'm off everything now for a week and feel great, just a bit weak.  Going to practice with the guys tonight for the first time in six weeks!  All is good.

Other Bass Brands / Gretsch Broadkaster
« on: July 20, 2015, 06:47:51 AM »
Well, I've been gassing for another one and since they discontinued them, I thought now is the time.  Got me a Broadkaster, brand new with papers.  Never should have sold my first one, I missed it.  These are great basses, right up there with the ThunderJet.  Going to practice tomorrow with it.

I'm going to do some 2 pup models soon. I like the sweet spot placement of then pup.  I'm debating with myself about the second.  Should it go above the one closer to the neck, ala EB-2 mud city?  Or down by the bridge?  There's room in either direction!

So, I'm just thinking what to try next.  Suggestions welcome!  Note, you are allowed up to 2 votes if you like.   :)

Remember, the pup will go into something like this:

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Dumb question
« on: May 28, 2015, 09:20:41 AM »
I'm using a Gibson style pup ring on my basses and one side a bit taller than the other.  So, does the low side or the high side go towards the bridge?  You'd think I could figure that out! ???

Bass Amps & Effects / Quick fix help
« on: May 01, 2015, 01:29:11 PM »
Got my Mesa M pulse 360 today and heard a rattle. Popped the case and sure enough a nut was missing from what looks like the power board.  Has two big alum heat sinks on each side.  Can't find the little bastard nut anywhere, gonna have to buy one tomorrow.  Is there any place magnetic in the amp where it could be lurking?  The last time I had this happen on another amp, the screw was just rolling around the bottom.
