Gibson Basses / I'm caring for an orphaned single pup Greco bird
« on: December 03, 2015, 01:54:54 PM »
After buying a rare single pup Greco bird from this very forum a few years ago that was an absolutely marvellous bass, and then regretting selling it, I've been constantly pining for another ever since.  So yesterday I hit the BIN on a broken headstock example from a Japanese eBay seller, so in a week or so I'll get to find out if the break is an easy "glue and clamp" repair as the photos on ebay suggest.  I'll keep you posted.

We were on morning TV today (audience: 4 million of the 25 million who live in Australia) as a musical surprise for Richard Branson who is a huge fan of the Stones.  Load-in was at 4.45am, and our performance was at 7.50am.  Over 3 hours of our time for a 90 second performance

Other Bass Brands / another incoming Nash for me
« on: July 08, 2015, 04:11:14 PM »
Well, it's incoming in 10-12 weeks once they build it for me.  I've ordered an alder bodied PB55 (the contoured single coil tele bass body) in surf green (lightly reliced only) with a rosewood fingerboard, 3 ply white pickguard, and a Lollar single coil pickup.

The Outpost Cafe / Planes, not trains
« on: March 17, 2015, 02:59:03 PM »
I know we have a few train modellers here, but this is just as impressive.  The guy who built my custom B15-flavoured 100 watt head is also into remote controlled aircraft.  Here's his latest, build, a 1/6 scale Lancaster!

Quote
The model we are building is 1/6 scale. The wingspan is 17' and flying weight will be about 45Kg's. It will be powered by 4 x OS 40 4 stroke petrol engines spinning 3 blade 20" x 8" props. (20" diameter x 8" pitch) There are 14 servos, being controlled by an 18 channel transmitter. There is a lot of electronics involved, engine sync, rotating gun turrets, individual undercarriage control, bomb doors, etc.
It is a model of the Dam Buster plane, the bomb doors are about 1.5 metres long. The undercarriage is hydraulically operated, the main wheels are 200mm diameter. The whole plane is covered with 100 x 3mm strips of balsa. It will have a very light fibreglass covering which will be painted. We have spent about 300 hours on it so far, we want to fly it in August, so there will be a lot of hours to go. First flight will be a very nerve racking time. All up cost (without any labour cost) will be about $20,000!!!
The next project is going to be a similar sized B17 and then a big Lysander. When I get PB going I will add some of the amazing jets our members have built and fly. They are true turbine models.
Re the Merlin sound, a mob in Germany build an onboard sound system which can be programmed for any aero engine sound. It has a 40 watt amp and uses special 3" speakers. Very expensive.

The Bass Zone / Latest live promo video
« on: November 13, 2014, 03:00:26 PM »
We paid someone to come to one of our shows last month and put 4 fixed GoPros on stage while running around with a handheld, and taking an audio feed from the mixing desk (plus whatever audio he could use from the GoPros).  Turned out pretty well I reckon ....

The Bass Zone / Stones tribute video featuring our 6'3" female vocalist
« on: October 07, 2014, 03:35:09 PM »
This is our 8 piece "concert" lineup that we use when venue size and budget permits.  Michele is awesome - in boots she is taller than our 6'5" tall "Keef"!

Fender Basses / new to my growing short scale herd: MIJ Mustang
« on: September 25, 2014, 05:43:36 PM »
As I continue to add basses to the herd that Bill Wyman used back in the day, I recently added a fiesta red Mustang. I know, I should have bought one in competition orange, in order to be historically accurate, but once I added some stripes I figure the average audience member wouldn't know the difference under stage lights.  I'm quite surprised at how beefy the baby P bass pickup is on these - it really does play and sound like a mini P bass, for a model that was originally a low budget member of the Fender catalogue.

Other Bass Brands / Incoming: Framus 5/150 reissue
« on: January 19, 2014, 03:54:29 PM »
Yes, I did it.  Given the Stones are touring Australia this year and our Stones tribute is getting lots of well paid bookings as a result, I thought I'd splash out on a Framus for the hell of it.  The Bass Place in Arizona had one in stock for $1195, discounted from the MSR price of over $1800.

Will report once it arrives.

So, my Wyman stage props now number 4 ... the Framus, Vox Wyman, Dan Armstrong lucite reissue, and Gibson EB-3 reissue.  Not sure I'll go the whole hog and buy a Travis Bean or a Fender Mustang though.  And the reissue of Bill's home made fretless is as ugly as a hat full of a$$holes, so that's not on the list either.

Other Bass Brands / Vox Wyman
« on: December 08, 2013, 05:37:18 PM »
I've scored a Vox Wyman at a bargain price for use in the 60s section of our Stones tribute show.  It's on the way from the UK, so I should have it in a week or so.  Based on the photos, the neck pickup has been replaced by a Strat pickup or something like that (might even be a Jazz pickup, but the photo is too small to tell for sure).  So, I'll need to source a white/cream 4 pole pickup at some point in time.  From what Google tells me, these basses are not fantastic players, with baseball bat necks, but for the price I paid I don't mind as long as it is playable and produces sound LOL

I know Thornton owns/owned a Wyman, and I think Leftybass owned a Vox at some point before he bought his Phantom Guitarworks reissue.  Anyone else own a Vox teardrop or Wyman?
