The Bass Zone / Seattle Thunderbird Club GTG
« on: February 28, 2024, 12:08:55 PM »

For the past two years the Talkbass Thunderbird Group has had a fun informal GTG, they were both in Hollister, California with some activities in nearby Santa Cruz as well.
This year, the event travels north to Seattle and I'll be hosting it, dates will run between 7/25- 8/3. We plan to visit Seattle's better bass shops, including Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, Emerald City Guitars and The Bass Shop. We'll also likely take a trip to Seattle's Museum of Flight for a tour through, it's a World Class place, even has a Hellcat and a Corsair on display. We'll have plenty of Thunderbirds (and a few other basses) to play at my home, most likely my bandmates will come over for an afternoon jam, so folks can play along with The Nasty Habits. There's lots of great food nearby so we'll eat and drink nicely. My home is just south of Seattle's SeaTac airport in lovely Des Moines, so it's pretty easy if you're flying in.
Want more details? Please don't hesitate to drop me a note :)

Gibson Basses / My BaCH Non Reverse
« on: June 23, 2023, 08:33:56 AM »

My BaCH Non Reverse is all put together and sounding great. Thank you Scott Dasson for all the superb parts, tail piece, tug bar, and especially the pickgard! The neck on this is absolutely fabulous, it plays very much like my old Gibson, BaCH and Rob really made these basses into something quite special, I'm very happy and fortunate to own one again.

The Outpost Cafe / The Cold Blue B-17 Documentary
« on: March 21, 2023, 08:24:30 AM »

Frank and I watched this last night, it's very good. The footage was originally shot in color during 1943 as a team of cinematographers were documenting the Memphis Belle's completion of 25 missions. A lot of that footage was used to make the wartime film that most folks know about, this documentary is all the footage that was not used for that film. It's very human, with lots of film of people, the ground crews and the young men that flew along with much footage of B-17s as well. I'd also note that the sound track was very complimentary, beautiful violin, acoustic guitar and harmonica.
Highly recommended if you like B-17s.

There's trailers on the IMDB page

Not that I should have ever sold the first one I got, hopefully this makes up for a past stupidity on my part. It will get a Lull pickup.

Not my pic.

The Outpost Cafe / 50 years ago today........
« on: November 01, 2022, 08:14:00 AM »

Slade "Slayed" is released..........An album that was a huge influence on me then, and still today. I played the record endlessly, my poor Mom - her proper German sensibilties were horrified by Dave Hill's hair! I think this to be their very best 'album" even though it doesn't have C'mon feel the Noize" on it, Jim Lea is utterly brilliant on "Move Over" and the big, woofy tone coming out of his EB-3 is clearly not the bass tone from the other side of the Atlantic. My proggie friends didn't much care for them, too caught up in the usual LZ, PF FM fare I guess. I was starting to learn the bass about this time, Lea's work was well past my abilities but it did inspire me to keep playing and Hill was everything I thought a rock star should be.
Thanks for the great music Noddy, Dave, Jim and Don!

My Epiphone Vintage Pro, not like any other!  It spent about 3 months in quarantine at the wrap shop, then a bit more time getting set up at Mike Lull.

Staying sane during Covid times...…..I really miss playing out!

 TIME: 16:34 BST
DATE: FRIDAY 14TH AUGUST 2020

PRESS RELEASE

Iconic bass player Pete Way founder of UFO, Waysted and, latterly, The Pete Way Band has died.

He sustained life threatening injuries in an accident two months ago but fought hard until finally succumbing to those injuries at 11.35am BST today. His wife, Jenny, was at his side.

Pete Way was a much loved and highly regarded figure among rock fans, critics and fellow musicians alike. Best known for his work with UFO, Pete’s energetic live performances were at the heart of the band’s countless world tours. His melodic bass lines underpinned the catalogue of enduring rock classics upon which UFO’s reputation and legacy were founded. Pete’s post UFO work included collaborating with “Fast” Eddie Clarke from Motörhead - the two putting together Fastway with Humble Pie drummer Jerry Shirley and bassist for his long time friend, Ozzy Osbourne. He then put together his own band Waysted. Pete’s keen ear for song arrangements have also seen him serve as producer for popular hard rock acts such as Twisted Sister and the Cockney Rejects. Pete had recently finished a solo album, “Walking On The Edge” with producer Mike Clink (Guns n Roses “Appetite For Destruction” amongst many more.) He had a biography published “A Fast Ride Out Of Here” in 2017 and an album “Amphetamine” which is currently out on Cargo Records.

Pete is survived by two daughters, Zowie and Charlotte and his younger brother, Neill.

Gibson Basses / New (to me) Gibson 2005 Thunderbird Studio
« on: May 18, 2020, 08:22:23 AM »

New to me Gibson 2006 Studio, I'm really digging this bass! Great tone from (of all things!) TB Plus pickups, this is a pretty lively set of them. This one came to me all the way from Memphis (I think there's a song in that) , got a really good deal!

You know it's mine 'cause there's a Subaru involved, the only 7enders at my house are on the car.

A bit of video fun too.
