The Bass Zone / Can Anyone ID This Bass ?

It looks vaguely familiar but I can't think of the brand name.

I've seen that headstock before.

The Bass Zone / Prince....playing a live bass solo
« on: April 25, 2016, 02:38:25 AM »
I've seen his virtuoso guitar and keyboard playing but this is the first I've seen his bass playing.

It just came out that Prince was awake for 154 hours before he died. Would love to hear what he was working on during that time.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Spector 12ver
« on: January 22, 2016, 08:49:00 PM »
Well.....recently picked this up. A 20+ y.o. Spector 12ver husk. Dual-truss, 7-piece neck-thru with abalone inlays. It's routed perfectly for TBird pickups and has posts for a Hamer 12ver bridge, all,of which I already have for it.

Also have all the Schallers I need.

Just needs to be painted and put together.

Also snagged a same period fretless Spector, complete except for the PJ PUPs.

Long story....but they were sitting at a luthier friend of mine.s shop, apparently a loooong time. He got them in a pile of stuff he bought from someone years ago. He isn't familiar with 12vers, so just had it sitting  on a shelf all these years.

While snagging two cool Spectors might normally be a cool enough story.....that is the boring part of the story. My friend also happened to grow up as a close pal of Jaco Pastorius in FL and NYC. He can also play great and toured as bassist in Blood Sweat & Tears.

So.....he pulls out a 1960 fretless Jazz Bass that Jaco gave him as a present many years ago. That alone was cool to see. I didn't think he'd actually hand it to me to play. Even cooler.
And that after I played a jazzy "Norwegian Wood," to have him say "very cool" was even better.
The bass is a natural color, recleared over the typical screw holes from a missing pick-guard...inlaid plastic wood in the defretted neck that is cleared over with somethng. Incredibly cool bass that played fantastic.

I had brought over my Lane Poor Minima 5-string that Lane gave me years ago and one of those oddball semi-teardrop Gibson prototypes I have. He said I hold the record for the two weirdest basses to walk i to the shop together.

Will qdd a photo of the Spector later. The one I have is too big to upload.

Gibson Basses / 1964-65 Thunderbird
« on: November 16, 2015, 09:50:44 AM »

Are there any famous "smashings" of early Gibson Thunderbirds, on a scale of Hendrix smashing his Strat at Monterey or Paul Simonon smashing his bass on The Clash's "London Calling" LP ?

Any photos?

....smashing Leon Wilkinson's TBird in the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash doesn't count. :)

The Bass Zone / Bass Players in Scientific Study
« on: September 03, 2015, 09:14:24 PM »

....sort of an oxymoron of a title but science has proven bassists are the most important member of the band.

Keep on mind this WAS a CANADIAN study. :)

Gibson Basses / Gibson's Latest & Greatest Turd !!
« on: March 24, 2015, 04:25:30 PM »
Well.....it ain't a bass.

BUT, it is SOOOOO ridiculous that it needs a mention.

As usual, no bass version. (Thank God!)  Henry must know bass players are either broke or smart.

Could just be Henry's clever marketing sense on how to make the rest of the 2015 Gibson line seem inexpensive by comparison ?

Gibson Basses / Three-Point Bridge Question
« on: March 09, 2015, 04:34:36 PM »

OK.....

I have a number of Gibson Basses with three-point bridges on them. I don't mind them and can usually get them playing pretty well.

So, recently I picked up an '87 TBIrd. Someone had screwed with the three-point bridge and bent an arch into the base plate, I guess trying to match the arch of the fingerboard. Anyway, they had put a crack in the base, so I bought a replacement.

In looking at Gibby three-point replacements, I noticed most older ones have flate bass plates but I did run across a couple with slight arches to the base.

Did Gibson actually make two versions of the base, one flat and one arched?  Or was the arched one something done aftermarket? I gues an arched one would make sense for one of the basses that had a slightly arched top ?

But wondering if anyone knows for sure if any models definitely had arched three-point bridges?

Also, the saddles in my broken three-point were not the typical T-shaped ones. They were straight rectangles with no T at the top. Anyone know if any three-point bridges came with those or did someone swap another brand of saddles onto it?

The Bass Zone / Best Bass Practice Gizmo ?
« on: November 07, 2014, 10:04:49 AM »
OK....So I'm in the market for a new practice box for bass.

What is the current recommended choice? Korg Pandora still near the top of the list?

Anything that is specifically designed for bass, without a pile of six-string sounds and amps ?

Want something that has a USB AND old analog inputs for a CD player.

RECOMMENDATIONS....or should I hold off a few months to see what drops at NAMM  and Frankfurt ?

The Outpost Cafe / Happy Halloweenie !!
« on: October 31, 2014, 01:54:07 PM »
you guys who do not live in countries that celebrate Halloween need to visit New Orleans for Halloween.....one of the best places to experience it! Killer annual three day music VooDoo Fest festival.

VooDoo Fest runs three days, with music on multiple, stages all day....plus tons of other clubs in the city with live bands running all night. New Orleans is THE U.S. 24-hour music and party city and Halloween is THE time to hit it.  Mardi Gras, around FEB, tends to bring in too many non-music party drunks....JazzFeat in the spring is cool but a lot more laid back music fans.

Found this near mint 1987 Gibson Custom Shop TBird hanging up high from a dealer's ceiling....even had the original case.  Looks to have been played once and put back in the case for 27 years!
