The Bass Zone / good place to sell parts
« on: March 31, 2009, 02:07:40 PM »
is ebay a good idea for selling parts?  in particular, a gibson ripper bridge and tuners, an epi t-bird bridge, and an unknown hollow body style tail piece.  Is this stuff worth the hassle of putting it on ebay?

I got a GREAT deal on a "used" t-bird neck (thanks Mark)  he pulled it off a new epi bird and the neck sat, and developed a slight bow.  The plan is to bolt the neck up, put normal string tension on it, give it some time, then adjust the truss rod and see if it comes out of it.  We expect it will.
How long should I wait before making a truss rod adjustment?

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / new "finish" on ibanez iceman
« on: March 17, 2009, 04:43:10 PM »
Hi everybody, just wanted to share today's project.
Its an ibanez iceman. I got it from a pawn shop with the original hard shell case for 200 out the door. Couldn't complain. But I never could get into the burst that was on it, just didn't look right to me. So I found some plastic mirror that you can cut with scissors, bought a bunch of 6x9 inch sheets, and chopped it up and stuck it to the bass, I still have a LOT of work to do, have to coat the whole top of it now with the stuff they use for bar tables, and those big wooden clocks and such. Anyway, here it is so far

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / want to fix my ripper
« on: February 17, 2009, 07:04:24 AM »
my ripper has been sitting for years, unplayable.  I have ALMOST everything to put it back together... pickups and electronics, bridge, tuners, misc hardware. what I don't have is a fretboard.  and I don't have the skill, experience, or tools to make a new one.  Since its a set neck, finding a donor neck is not going to work.  Unless its possible to cut a set neck off and route out a pocket for a bolt on, but even if that is possible, I don't see it working on the ripper as thin as the body is.  The reason the board is shot, is because a LONG time ago, I defretted it, and then wound up not liking fretless, so, in my stupidity, I tried to re-fret it, and that didn't go well at all.  I've since steamed the old board off the neck.
Should I try to steam a fretboard of another neck to put on there?  I'm on a super low budget, so sending it to a luthier is not an option.  I have a shot at picking up a "new" epi-bird neck.  The guy pulled it off of a brand new bird last spring, been sitting in his closet ever since.  He said its got a bow in it now.  He doesn't want much for it at all, What do you guys think of using it just for the fret board?

are there any techniques or products that allow you to stain or tint a clear coat that is already cured?  maybe sand the clear until its "frosty" then apply dye?
 transparent paint. any ideas?

Bass Amps & Effects / need help with 115
« on: January 25, 2009, 04:08:12 PM »
I have an avatar 115.  cabinet looks brand new.  its loaded with a first generation eminence deltalite.  At low volume it sounds very clean, a little lacking on the low end unless you crank the bass all the way up on the amp.  Anything above 1.5 to 2 on the amp and you have to play VERY gently or you'll distort the horn and the speaker.  I have an old carvin 210 with speakers that are LITERALLY coated with elmers glue hold the cones together.  with the same bass, and the same amp with everything set the same except for the volume, I can get considerably louder with the glued speakers than I can with the avatar without distortion.  I can't even turn the avatar up loud enough to play along with the stereo without it distorting.
i just traded a carvin 810 that had MAYBE 2 hours of use for these avatars... the guy seemed really decent. I'd like to think he didnt rip me off.  Is there anything it could be other than a bad speaker?

What factors do you guys weigh in when deciding whether or not to undertake a project?  I've been wanting a hollowbody or semi hollowbody forever.  I recently got a great deal on a hollow body for the project, just the body, but the more I look at it, the more I realize its a LOT smaller than what I want.  I wanted a big monster body, but I've got electrics bigger than this one :[  So, should I still try to get the parts to put it together and refinish the body? or would that be a bad idea since it will be smaller than what I wanted?  So I guess what I'm asking, is how would YOU decide between holding out for what you really want, or settling and working with what you have?

Other Bass Brands / a question for hollowbody players
« on: August 01, 2008, 07:48:28 AM »
I've been noticing how many different sizes of semi and hollow body basses there are out there.
Anybody played large bodies and small bodies and have opinions on which ones more usable?  Are the larger bodies more awkward to play to where they don't get played as much?  Is there a big difference in sound?
My problem is a psychological one right now.  When I see the ENORMOUS hollowbodies I think they are the coolest thing ever.  A  bas version of anything that brian setzer plays... or a bass version of Dave Grohl's pellham blue hollowbody.  Those are the most visually appealing things to me.
BUT, would I be sacrificing playability by going with something THAT big?

I've been noticing that there are a lot more appealing body choices for hollow boy guitars than there are for basses.  There are obviously fewer bolt on choices than set necks.. but there are still more bolt on hollow body guitars at decent prices than there are hollow body basses in the same price range
anyway, as long as the neck fit the pocket properly, and the bridge was installed in the right place, the pickups replaced with bass pickups.  That should work and yield a playable instrument, right?
or is there something I'm not thinking about?

Other Bass Brands / cheap semi hollows
« on: July 29, 2008, 01:58:27 PM »
any one in here have one or have had one?  looking for something at or under 300 dollars for a used one.  So far I've found Ibanez AGB 140, Ibanez AGB200, and for just over 300 I've seen Jay Turser JTB-134's
I'm not sure if I want to go with a long or short scale.
Any others I should be looking into for that price?  Any thoughts on the ones I've mentiones?

The Outpost Cafe / Saying Hello
« on: July 29, 2008, 09:04:34 AM »
Hi everyone,
Just joined the forum and didn't want to be one of those pesky lurkers so I figured I'd introduce myself.
I am 39 years old, live in a musically deprived town called Bryan in the nw corner of ohio.  Desperately searching for a band, but not much in the way of prospects around here.  My biggest and earliest influence was Gene Simmons, and I'm still a die hard Kiss fan to this day.  Gene is the reason I have my gibson, a 77 ripper, it's seen better days, LOL.  My second biggest influence is Allen Woody.
I started on an old ibanez exb, which went to my wife this past valentines day when she expressed a desire to learn.  Since then she has also picked up an Epiphone Eb-0.  For valentines day I also gave her my bass rig, an ancient carvin pro bass 300 and a more recent carvin 410.  I replaced it with a carvin bx1200 and a carvin 810.  Funny how I used the 810 once and borrow her 410 all the time or use my old carvin 210.
The arsenal has undergone a lot of changes this year.  In january, I got rid of my ibanez prestige sr1000.  Picked up an epi thunderbird and financed part of my rig.  A decision I can't imagine I'll ever regret.  For valentines day, my wife  bought me an 81 peavery t-40.  This month was the big one...I had some back issues that keep me from playing the t-40 (the tree trunk that it is), so my wife, out of the blue, buys me a peavey millenium bxp, meanwhile I picked up a pawn shop princess, a super cheap epi-ebo that went under the knife, and the router, and the sander, etc etc etc.  AND, last week I got an orange metallic yammy bb414 off of ebay :]   Ok, enough of my babbling.  Hi everybody :]
