Gibson Basses / Short Scale Gibson TBird Questions
« on: March 28, 2019, 07:00:56 PM »
Hey guys! Anyone here have a Gibson Shortsale TBird? A friend is after some details for a build he is doing.
What is the neck width at the nut, neck width at the 12th, neck width at the treble end of the fretboard, neck thickness through at the nut, neck thickness through at the 12th?

Also is the neck a laminate like a full scale Gibson TBird?
Is it set neck or neck through?

Thanks in advance.

Gibson Basses / Gibson Midtown Pickup Advice
« on: June 13, 2018, 08:44:59 PM »
I just received this glorious Midtown Sig (private purchase second hand).

The bass is in really beautiful condition (neck excellent), only issue is that the neck pickup sounds absolutely cr@p. In addition to the note we get a big, distorted echo and a wonderful feedback squeal at volume. Bridge pickup is clear as a bell. Sounds like the neck pickup is microphonic to me. Not quite the NBD I had hoped for.

I have reported it to the seller and at least at this stage he is willing to talk to me about repairing it or taking it back (on the other side of Australia). I would like to keep it if possible.
There is a guy who does wax potting locally, but he says sometimes it doesn't fix the problem. I have a look at the wiring and I will get him to remove the pickup and reinstall it or a replacement (looks a bit awkward in there).

First question.
What is a good replacement pickup at a reasonable price?
Are these ones OK?

Or rhis one?

Other suggestions?
Where can I get a genuine Gibson pickup?

Does anyone here have an SG Bass neck pickup for sale?

Gibson Basses / Fretboard Material Epiphone Vintage Pro TBird
« on: February 04, 2018, 02:06:35 AM »
Do we know definitively what type of wood they are using to make the fretboards of the Epi VP TBirds? I am interested because the Australian importer appears kaputish and there is no sign of them Downunder. I am importing one and want to know in case there are questions.

I am aware that Flyguitars mentions this colour and fret board timber combination (Ebony board and red finish), so I believe it is legit.
How rare is this?
What would be a fair price to pay for it in sound condition?

Gibson Basses / What Is This One?

I don't seem to recall a Gibson Les Paul Bass quite like this one which is currently or sale on Reverb.
Is it a genuine Gibson?

Gibson Basses / TBird Studio- Fiver

What are these like? I want a good strong B and evenness across the pickups. I play finger style- so is the spacing OK?
Does the pickup just sound like a TB+? Looking at pics of the bass- are the pickups, in fact, just a four string TB+s?
If so, is the B and the G strong?

The Outpost Cafe / Reptile Thread
« on: September 04, 2016, 12:46:48 AM »
Uwe liked a few pics I posted last season of the local reptiles, so I thought I would start a thread for him . I'll add as they start to appear with the start of spring. All welcome, of course.
Today, our 4 metre Carpet Python reappeared. She is holes up behind a pot a a few feet from the backdoor soaking up the warmth from the concrete. My wife was less than impressed. The snake is still there as I type. I am hoping she will decrease our Bandicoot population tonight as they are tearing our lawn to pieces!

This morning I went to pick up two GK Neo 212ii cabinets that I won yesterday on eBay (very pleased with the price on them BTW).
Started chatting. The guy was selling them because he stopped playing a few years back. I asked if he had sold his basses and he said he still had one he wanted to sell. He said it was a Les Paul Double Cut but he hadn't serviced it is several years. He brought it out and asked what I thought it was worth. I said hard to say. He suggested a figure which I just couldn't believe. So she came home with me.
2006 Les Paul Double Cut in Black Cherry, I believe.
Neck is great, straight as an arrow, balances pretty well because of the pin position in the upper bout, no breaks, frets perfect,TB+ (Les Paul versions) clear and strong. pots quiet, output jack dodgy, a little surface rust on the saddles, strings rusted, a few scratches but nothing dreadful.
I had often wanted a LP Bass for the sound and the looks, but never bought one because of the weight and balance issues (the ones I had played even worried me and I am happy to gig 11 lb basses if they are balanced  ).
Amazing part 4.2K- 9.25lbs and balances well!
Here she is a bit grotty, but I will clean her up and service her. I will post some more then.
These pics DO NOT do justice to the maple cap- it is more cherry red and the flame is quite striking.

So what can you guys tell me about these basses?- I believe they are different in some way to the LP Money Basses.

What can you good people tell me about the single pickup non reverse Bach Bird? What are the specs? Quality of build and hardware? How well are they made? One has turned up that I am considering.

Gibson Basses / How Good Is The OSB Les Paul Bass
« on: February 20, 2016, 11:19:50 PM »
As the the title says.
Views please?
I am shopping at present.
I have an ES 335 Bass and absolutely love it (much more so than a Gibson TBird with "supposedly" the same pickups, so I don't need  description of the guitar style TB Plus pickups. Do they sound much the same in a LP OSB as an ES 335, or so close it doesn't matter? If so, that is great. Were the LP OSBs pleked as well? Is the neck similar to the ES 335?
I have an opportunity to pick up a gold top LP OSB, depending on the final figure which we haven't got to yet, and I seriously thinking about it.(I haven't played the LP OSB yet as it is a couple of hours drive away and want to get some info before I look at it)
I would welcome the views of you guys, who know lots about Gibson basses, rather than the general swill who will tell me to buy a Jazz or a PBass and be done with it ( I have plenty of them and so, they are the last thing I want to buy).
There is an EB13 also available at the moment for less $$$ of course. Views?

Gibson Basses / ES 335 Bass

Happy I took the plunge and bought this.
I really like it. The TB Plus pickups sound a bit brighter than those in my 08 Gibson TBird to my ear, but still with plenty of growl when played aggressively. Lovely mellow tone when played closer to the neck.
Well balanced and nicely put together. I find it very comfortable to play and the neck is very similar to the neck on my 74 Ripper, which is one of my all time favourite necks.
Could care less about the limited higher fret access. ;)
