Gibson Basses / Epiphone new/vintage knob
« on: October 01, 2023, 05:30:22 AM »
When I bought my first Epiphone Embassy, from the ´60s, it was, in every sence of the word, in excellent condition. But.... one thing was missing. The three original knobs. One for bass/treble, two for the pickup's volume. Well, in those days it was possible to find stuff at the Ebay, at good prices. So one day i found three knobs for the Embassy. Though only one for volume. Instead I got two for bass/treble. I thought it would have to do. Which it did!

But now, a quarter of a life later, I realize the Embassy would look way cooler with two controls for volume. Right? And, as I'm a lucky guy, it turns out that Epiphone's new series of Embassy's got the same knobs as the sixties ones. So a solution seeme, for a while, to be in reach. But they aren't.  Can't find the knobs, as an unhappy guy once said.

Is there anybody out there in bassland who knows where to get the knobs, but at a price level that's not ridiculous? They look exactly like this: https://reverb.com/item/50559214-vintage-reissue-epiphone-knobs-newport-olympic-wilshire-crestwood-coronet-embassy-deluxe

The Outpost Cafe / Music from the Polar Circle
« on: January 16, 2023, 12:22:07 PM »
Three years ago the band I was in, Shake Down in Umeå, lost our drummer. Lars Gillén lost his struggle against cancer. It was a hard blow, very much for the music we made, but as much for all the interesting conversations him and me had in the rehearsel studio. Lars read a lot, about four books a week, according to his wife. That's around 200 new books a year! Lars was an intellectual, but not an ordinary. He was a working class intellectual, which means he didn't fly off with different theories without having hiss foots firmly on the ground.
We both supported the Grateful Dead approach to music. Let is loose. See what happens. Roll with it. Or kill your darling in a mercifull way.
The clip I'm about to show you is from the last gig we did. Around the 26th of December, 2019. It shows Lars down to earth drumming. Nothing fancy. Just the way me myself prefer a drummers style. Lars was so tired, he said NO when it came to encore. I miss that guy, bad. His grave is close to my in-laws. Every time I'm there I stop and say Hello to Lars.
Hope you like it!

Other Bass Brands / Epiphone batwing knob
« on: June 18, 2022, 12:52:50 PM »
The Epiphone Embassy that was released some - maybe two? - years ago does not have the Batwing head. But, it still got the same knobs as the Batwings from the 60's. If you've seen them, you know them. Like this: https://www.epiphone.com/en-US/Electric-Bass/EPIM96326/Sparkling-Burgundy

I'd really like to get hold of half a dozen of these knobs, especially now that they are back in production again. But I can't  find them! Anybody out there who's got any briliant ideas? Don't hesitate, send those ideas to me!

Thanks!

The Outpost Cafe / Bobby Graham
« on: April 23, 2021, 11:06:00 AM »
At last, as sis Etta James so cleaverly put it, is it possible to get the memoirs of the sublime - yet raw - English drummer Bobby Graham. He did a Ramses II - who left Memphis for heaven, according to The Fugs -  twelve years ago. He was a great drummer, and he was heard on many, many recordings from both the 60's, and the 70's. Put the swing behind Dusty Springfield, Tom Jones, The Kinks, and many others. Including Dave Clark Five, though that wasn't so much about swing as good payment.

Bobby's got his own site on Facebook, and there's where I found his memoirs. The package included a cd with recordings by him. And, if I got you interested by now: you know that first knack on Kinks You really got me, and all the drumming on the tune, that's not Mick Avory. Guess who it is... Yeah, you're right. It's that english drummer.... the one named.... named... Billy, was it? No.... Bonny? Not him either..... Well, then it's got to be one of all them Bobbys? Right? Well, well..

Talking about Them old Kinks, a certain tune comes to my mind. This one, which does not include anyone else but Mr Avory, but anyway is sooooo goooood, and got such a beautiful life's philosophy... Plus, it could almost be a Beach Boys tune.

Have a nice weekend!

Other Bass Brands / Fender + bird = Fenderbride!
« on: March 22, 2019, 01:06:16 PM »
Gotta say, I've had a really nice day. Started with my son calling me up in the morning, telling me he sent a picture from an advertismen he'd seen on a site. It was a Bach Fenderbird. Red. Looked beautiful!
Son says, "Hey dad, if you want it, I'll get it for you". Of course I want it. Maple neck. 2 pups. Red. As sin!
So I tell him, you don't have to, I'll buy it myself. Then he tells me, "don't you remember you gave me your P-bass -65, and one of your Embassies. This one's on me".
So he bought it, for me. US dollars 180!The Fenderbird is 1 000 kilometers from here, down in Gothenburg. But my grandson lives there, so he's gonna pick it up on Sunday. Then it's another story to get it up to my place. Though that's very small troubles!
Ain't life grand!?!

Other Bass Brands / Looks like a T-bird, and fly smooth
« on: March 12, 2019, 01:36:57 AM »
Found this clip, where this bass shows at the very first seconds of the clip. Looks like a T-bird, but with a kind of Italian twist. What is it? Anyone in the know?
Think the bass player grooves in a nice, simple way, and gives the Pop Tops a good trampline bottom. Or?

Bass Amps & Effects / 2x15 vs 1x15 + 4x10?
« on: October 04, 2018, 01:55:06 AM »
I've had my 2x15 cabinet, with one ElectroVoice, and one JBL, since -75. Never let me down! Sounds hungry and mean if I want to, and like smooth velvet when needed. But nowadays it's to heavy for me.

So my son, and I, changed speakers. I got his Ampeg Classic, made in Vietnam, 1x15 + Ampeg Classic 4x10. Connected it to my Fender Dual Showman.

Sounded thin!

So I'm thinking, maybe these 4x10 aren't made for me. Should I try to get another 1x15 Ampeg Classic, a 2x12, or something else? Suggestions are more than welcome!

The Bass Zone / Nina Simone bass?
« on: August 30, 2017, 02:07:42 AM »
So, I got my eyes on this here video. Nina Simone singing Four women. Thing is, this bass player's got a bass I don't recognise. Any one know what the piece is? You'll see it quite clear from 2.52.
