The Outpost Cafe / Bat Boy for President
« on: October 08, 2016, 04:04:44 AM »
Thanks for that link Dave! I know we are not supposed to get political here but this is major news. If there were ever an election to introduce a third party candidate , this is it. Bat Boy is the man and he has  got my vote. Leave it to Weekly World news to break the story. They're the only magazine that's not afraid to print the truth, the whole truth and anything but the truth. I lost the link, if you could post it here I think everyone would love it. It could change the outcome of the election, I hope this doesn't violate the no politics rule.

The Outpost Cafe / New Hip
« on: May 25, 2013, 05:05:17 AM »
I've been out of action for over a month after hip replacement surgery and been pumped full of pain meds :bored:. Had a little setback when they put a hairline fracture in my femur as they drove the spike with the ball joint into  it  :o. Kinda painfull. Still on a walker part time , but mainly on a cane.
All I can say is it ain't like the brochure ;D.

Bass Amps & Effects / Bass Drum Mic?
« on: April 27, 2012, 01:08:07 PM »
I know this has been covered in the past ,but I think I was absent that day :-[.
I'm using a Shure 57 with the outside head removed on the drum .It's tough to get enough bottom and the volume is minimal also.
Any good recommendations and a price tag that won't choke me :o.

Bass Amps & Effects / PA Equipment ?s JBL PRX Stuff?
« on: December 13, 2011, 05:30:49 AM »
I din't know if this is the right place to post this. If not , feel free to delete.
Thinking about some new PA gear . JBL has some new powered cabinets, the PRX 635, 1500 watt 3 way . I'm hearing real good things about them but I think they may be kind of an overkill. JBL PRX 615 is a 1000 watt 2 way, 15" speaker and horn cab that may fit my needs. All I'm running is vocals, a mic'd amp for harp , and a mic'd bass drum. I know the 2 way cabs a a bit less bottomy than the 3 ways, but bassed on what I'm using them for I'm not sure it will be a big deal. I'm currently using 3 of the 1st generation EONs for monitors(single 15/ little horn and 185 watts). I'm looking at matching it up with a Mackie 16 channel board.
Guitars are coming through 60 to 80 watt amps, bass is coming through a Genz Benz Shuttle with 600 watts and an Avatar 2 12" speaker w/ tweeter cab.
Anyone have any experience with JBL PRX 615 cabs in a similar situation?  Am I barking up the right tree? All opinions are welcome.

Bass Amps & Effects / Finally Tried a Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0
« on: August 03, 2011, 02:19:04 PM »
I took a 45 mile ride to the closest place that handles GB stuff and tried out the Shuttle 6.0 through the 2 10 cab. t This is an 8 ohm cab, so I was only getting 375 watts but it sounded good. It has all the features I like , bass boost /treble boost/mid scoop and it is a nice clean sound with the ability to add a little dirty push from the tube preamp. It is not as bottomy as my Seymour Duncan head but I was playing through 10 inch speakers rather than the 12s that I'm used to. I liked it ;D. I think I might be pulling the trigger on this thing and I may spring for the foot switch too.
Thanks to everyone and particularly Pilgrim for all the good input on this thing.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / 51 P Pickup
« on: November 20, 2010, 07:30:21 AM »
I've been thinking about replacing my 51 P RI pickup to a Seymour Duncan Antiquity II. I like the overall sound and tone of the stock PU but I have to admit it is not super strong. Reading up on the Antiquity II, everything seems like this PU should be what I want, but I'd like to get some info from those who have done this swap.
What exactly did it really do for you?
Was there a major difference in volume , bottom end, punch etc.?
How are they on single coil noise?
What kind of price and where did you buy?

Thanks,
Rick

Bass Amps & Effects / Rechargable Batteries and Chargers?
« on: May 07, 2010, 07:55:25 AM »
Since picking up my Line 6 G30 wireless hookup up I'm on a quest for batteries for it, my Roland Microcube amp and my Olympia acoustic/electric bass.
I've been doing some internet research on what's best. Is anyone using Maha Powerex NiMh batteries on anything? For AA batteries they are looking pretty good. They are rated at 2700 mah and the independent test results show that they are delivering over 100% of that. A lot of batteries are advertising pretty substantial mah ratings but testing out to deliver far less than advertised ( imagine that) ;)

I didn't come up with any test results for Duracell 2650 mah but their 2500 series looks pretty good. There is also another company with a 2900 mah bat but I couldn't find any test results on them. The tests are really pretty enlightening , some batteries are only deleviering 70-80% of what they advertise , while others are delivering over 100% of their advertised rating. So , you can buy a substatially lower rated battery and get more juice than the higher rated battery  ???.

I have not been able to find much good stuff on 9 volt NimH. Any suggestions?

I have a cheapo slow charger that is only good for up 2650 mah on a AA and 175 mah on a 9 volt. The question I have is this. mif I run a 2700 mah battery on a charger that is rated at only 2650, am I going to damage anything?  I am thinking about picking up another charger, but if I don't have to do it right away, I won't . Also, what's a good charger?

Thanks,
Rick

Bass Amps & Effects / What's a Good Wireless System?
« on: April 25, 2010, 05:23:58 AM »
I'm thinking of picking up a wireless hook up. I'll be using it with my 70 and 51 Precisions and also with my Olympia electric/ acoustic. I'm real curious as to how this will work with an acoustic. I have no experience at all with wireless systems so any help in making a selection would be much appreciated. I'm also curious as to what kind of prices to expect.
A guitar player I get together with has a Nady that he picked up a few years ago for just over $100 and it works really well. most of the bigger names like Shure are better than double that amount. Once again , I'm pretty clueless when it comes to wireless  stuff.

Fender Basses / String Heights on a P ?
« on: February 04, 2010, 09:56:37 AM »
Measuring at the 12th fret , where are you Precsion players setting your height?
I just started playing my  70 P again and it is sounding great , but last set up on it I had it set a bit too high. I tend to go for a bit on the high side anyway , but I went a little overboard . I've hit a point where it causes cramps and fatigue to my hand.
I was getting a little fret rattle and I took the action up to eliminate it. I think I need to negotiate with the fret rattle or take it in for some work.
Anyway , I'm very curious what you guys set your Ps at, particularly those of you who go to high side.
Thanks,
Rick

The Outpost Cafe / Kanye West and the VMA

Anyone catch Kaye West and Taylor Swift on the Video Music Awards? Is this guy the mayor of Loserville or what ???
This guy needs to learn how to act like an adult >:(
I'm not a big Taylor Swift fan , nor am I a fan of music video, and I can be a pretty disrespectful SOB myself, but what a low class way to handle a situation. If I've ever seen a guy in need of a serious butt kickin'....it's Kanye West >:(

Bass Amps & Effects / My Guitar Player Is Doing It Again
« on: August 28, 2009, 10:04:11 AM »
My guitarist  and long time friend has been on a life long quest for the holy grail in his sound. I have started a number of threads about the numerous new amps he has picked up over the last few years. A couple of weeks ago he picked up the top of the line Bose L System and the Stomp Box , an effects/emulation unit that is capable of 4000 patches( not a typo here, I said four thousand) and has a full Macintosh computer at the heart of the operation. We're still working the bugs out but this is an amazing set up.
I've never seen an electric player use a Bose set up like this. I know acoustic groups will run a couple of these things through a mixer and run everything through them as a PA.  Vocals, guitars, bass and whatever, with no need for monitors because of the unique way they disperse the sound in multiple directions. Acoustic players rave about them , but I've never seen anyone else use one as a guitar amp.
The capabilities of the Stomp Box are beyond anything I've seen, but this Bose L thing is a real piece of engineering right from concept. It really fills a room but the sound is non-directional. A conventional amp with a conventional speaker is very directional. You turn it up and stand in front of it and it blasts your pant legs and your ears off and the sound also pounds itself into the pickup zones of the vocal mics and creates feedback. This Bose thing just fills the room without that directional blast and it doesn't attack the pick up zones for the vocal mics. I was amazed to see/hear how much cleaner and louder the vocals got just by implementing this Bose L System as a guitar amp. And oh yeah , the guitar sounds great. Mega Power, unbelievably well dispersed sound and the Stomp Box delivers any sound you've ever heard come out of any guitar and amp combo.

Way too techy for a simpleton like me, but it's just right for him :) Like I said, we're still working the bugs out of it, but so far so good.
I'm not sure if this belongs here or in Guitars etc, but I would appreciate any feedback on the Bose L and the Stomp Box to help us get this set up tweaked in.

Guitars Etc. / Anybody Heard a ZT Lunchbox Amp?
« on: May 01, 2009, 12:52:42 PM »
My guitar player is a die hard ampoholic. Honestly, I don't have any idea how many he has ???
Last night he shows up to jam with a ZT Lunchbox amp. I laughed when I saw it. This thing is literally the size of a lunchbox, 7.3"x 9.8" x 4.4", with a 6.5" speaker in it. It looks kind of like one of those tiny little space heaters.
This thing is 200 watts peak power and 120 watts continuos music power. Never seen anything like it. Seen it , heard it, and still don't quite believe it :o.

He used it about half the night and then switched to his Fender M-80, which does sound better than the Lunchbox. Then again that Fender is a pretty sweet amp. You could actually gig with the Lunchbox though, they're freakin' amazing. Check them out at www.ztamplifiers.com  .
When he fired that thing up with his PR Smith we all just looked at one another with our chins hitting the floor in amazement :o

The Outpost Cafe / Let's Talk About F****
« on: April 10, 2009, 11:02:08 AM »
That's right folks.......Let's talk about Field Recorders :)
I'm seeing some pretty low prices on these things, and I've heard there are a lot of pretty good ones on the market, but I don't know anyone who has one.
GC has some good prices on Yamaha and Tascam stuff but I am clueless . Some have more features than others, but I'm not sure what features I'd want on a live recording unit. I know some have overdub capability, which sounds like it would be nice, if it gave you some ability to control the mix.
I'm very curious about the quality of vocal and bass reproduction too. Any words of wisdom for me???  All input is very much appreciated :).
