Gibson Basses / 2015 tbird vs 1991
« on: July 25, 2023, 04:20:16 PM »
I'm thinking of selling my 2015 and replacing it with a 1991 model. The 2015 is in mint condition and is really versatile with the coiltapping. The 1991 is fairly played in and has a minor headstock repair. I had a bit of a play with the '91 and the neck felt a bit thicker and felt like the body resonated nicely. Here's a link to the '91,

Fender Basses / Brains trust: Jazz bass help
« on: June 07, 2017, 03:10:20 PM »
I should probably just post this on TB but it's like asking a question in a subway at peak hour.
I need some wisdom regarding the good old jazz bass.
I recently picked up an early production MIK squier j bass, solid body (probably basswood), really nice neck. I took it to a blues jam and IMO it sounded terrible, all top and bottom with no mids ( no fundamental thump).
I've had a couple of j basses over the year and sold them off because i just prefer the tone of my P bass and Ripper.
I really want to have a J bass in my collection just for the tonal diversity.
My dilemma is whether to upgrade the pickups and pots or just flip it and make a little money on it.
Upgrading the pickups will cost close to what i paid for the bass.
I'm sure if I had a 60's J bass i'll love it.
Do you think this is worth upgrading?

Gibson Basses / Modding Gibson LPB-1
« on: December 22, 2016, 05:53:35 AM »
I'm currently stripping all the black finish off and getting rid of the active Bartolini preamp and go passive, VTVT. It's has Tbird pickups. My guess is 4 x 500k pots and 2 x caps.

This is streaming right now, sure it'll come up on youtube soon. Bassist Nick Seymour played a Gibson midtown in sunburst for the whole concert and it sounds bloody glorious.

Gibson Basses / A few questions about Ripper basses
« on: November 19, 2015, 01:37:42 AM »
A 74 Ripper (Alder body) has come up for sale locally, I had a play of it and instantly fell in love with it however it has some issues and I’m looking for some advice from the experts.
They’re asking $1999 AUD = $1430 USD
1.   The fret wire is universally flat and wide. This didn’t affect the notes just found it odd compared to fender frets.
2.   The 3 point bridge was screwed down to the body, the overall setup was nice but does that indicate a neck adjustment problem?
3.   The nut has been replaced and it doesn’t match the space of the old one, it's smaller but the string grooves are fine.
4.   There's a chip taken out of the ebony fret board between the 1st fret and nut, didn’t affect playability but should deduct from the premium price they’re asking.
5.   The vari-tone dial is loose and didn’t work but apparently it does intermittently by wiggling it.
6.   The pickups sounded OK
So I’m thinking it’ll need some work and the price is pretty high.
Thanks

Bass Amps & Effects / NAB FENDER TB-600
« on: July 07, 2015, 11:26:28 PM »
Fender TB-600 is essentially a Fender Bassman/Showman front end which was reintroduce a few years ago as the TBP-1 preamp.
This thing is a beast, featuring a value front end with SS power in spades delivering a warm vintage tone that suits the Americana style boogie, country, blues band I’m in.
The bass fit perfectly in the mix with enough tone and volume to drive the band but not get in the way of the other instruments.
I found the classic tone stack to work really well however I had to do quite a bit of research.
I set it to 2-10-3 bass, mid, treb this gave me a solid warm tone without honky mids, the highs are subtle, this was with my Gibson SG bass with flats.
Foot pedal is awesome with built in tuner/mute, boost channel for kicking in the during guitar solos, the
OD channel adds girth and balls, had it on for all songs except for the less rockin’ country singer songs, where the simple valve tone stack sounded perfectly warm and supportive.
The TB-600 also had a tonne of headroom only turning the master up to 2.

Gibson Basses / Has this happened to anyone else's Gibby
« on: December 09, 2014, 09:44:43 PM »
Where the board comes apart from the neck.
I've had this bass for 3 years, it's a 2008 model SG bass. Just wondering if it's common to gibsons?
Doesn't effect the play ability at all and I had exactly the same happen to an Epi EB-3.
Will it get worse and need repairing?

Bass Amps & Effects / NAD SWR Basic Black and Basic 2-Way
« on: September 23, 2014, 10:13:25 PM »
I know people here dig pure tubey goodness ( as I do) but these two items came up for sale locally for a good price so I snagged them.
The Basic Black has a tube pre, both boxes loaded with 15"  this rig can get plenty loud! enough to annoy band mates.
I think my GK 800RB sounds cleaner than the Basic Black. Thing I like about this rig is no coloration , pure tone of your instrument and your fingers, no where to hide. The old Squier with flats sound mighty good.

Other Bass Brands / NBD 1985 Ibanez Roadstar 2 RB650

Really enjoying this bass.
Features, Basswood body, Dimarzio type pickups, maple neck, 500k pots, Gotoh bridge. Great solid workhorse axe.
Love the feel of the neck - best P bass neck I've played, put on some TI flats and it just hits you in the guts.
I set the tone 95% down otherwise it's just too bright.
