Gibson Basses / Gibson EB-650 (on UK auction 16/6/18)
« on: June 06, 2018, 09:45:29 AM »
This has come up on an auction site here in the UK, not eBay et al - a proper auction where people bid and there a live auctioneer!  Anyone know anything about these?  There's an estimate of £1500-2000GBP ($2K-$3K near as dammit).  Never seen one before.

Gibson Basses / US Bass Player Magazine (May 2018). Me! Hahaaaar!
« on: May 12, 2018, 01:21:04 PM »
I know this is kind of a non-Gibson thing (but I only contribute to the Gibson area in this hallowed forum), but I'm blowing my own trumpet as I'm featured in the May 2018 edition of Bass Player in The Real World section.  I very nearly spat out my coffee when I turned the page and saw my name there.

I did the shizz for them over six months ago, so I've kind of rebuilt my gear a bit since submission and I've left the Johnsons, but hey, any exposure is good exposure, huh?  It's nice that Stuart Hill (ex-Dischord band, Shudder To Think) shot me a message earlier saying he was 'very flattered' to see his name up on my Heroes and Inspirations list.

Other Bass Brands / NBD - Mike Lull
« on: December 31, 2017, 07:38:33 AM »
New Mike Lull arrived end of last week.  Oversized NRT5, satin black.  It sounds totally different to the JAXT4 I own. Very happy.

Gibson Basses / My work here is done...
« on: September 07, 2017, 05:17:26 AM »
Afternoon from the UK
After about a decade of using Gibson Thunderbirds, my dalliance with the brand is over with my final 'bird is shipping off to Portugal tomorrow.  I've owned around ten in the last decade, but decided about three months ago to - and I hate using this term - thin the herd as I'm essentially migrating over to Mike Lulls.  I'm currently down to a Lull JAXT4, a Hamer FBIV and a very old beaten up Aria ProII Primary Bass.  I have another Lull on order (NRT5, ovesized body), which should drop inside of eight weeks, so the Gibsons have funded that.  Well, some of that.  I really won't miss the tedium (and expense) of swapping out those three-pointers for Babicz replacements.

I do feel a little melancholic, but things move along.  Quality over quantity, I suppose.  I'll keep an eye on what Gibson are doing, but as there's nothing bass-wise on the 2018 catalogue, I doubt that'll be on my agenda for the next 52 weeks at least.

Thanks for everyone's input.  I'll dip in periodically for a catchup to see who's moaning about what.

Love to everyone.

Gibson Basses / Poor sweet baby.

Just remember, you will never be able to unsee this.  You have to wonder where people's heads are sometimes.  I suppose, with patience, you could saw off the crap and rebuilt it.

Gibson Basses / Thomann and Gibson. *Custom colours*
« on: May 25, 2016, 02:36:51 AM »
While I'm sure that most non-US members here will be familiar with a few US instrument retailers, our American cousins may (or may not) be familiar with the German retailer Thomann; much like Amazon, they've kind of become the default business to search for and price compare new instruments over this side of the pond.

Anyhow, there's been a handful of threads here and elsewhere about Thomann having the purchase power to approach Gibson and persuade them into doing a run of basses in non-standard colours, I mean, how hard would it be?  With this in mind, I emailed Thomann yesterday...amazingly they've not closed the door on the suggestion and are approaching Gibson to see whether it's feasible!  They mentioned they work with Gibson for guitars, but never basses.

I mentioned that Gibson have done specials before (Mark had posted an image of the Sapphire Blue Yamano model on Talkbass years ago, so I used that as an example).  The prospect of sea foam green, cardinal red (like the Jeordie White/Twiggy prototype) or sapphire blue options would be great.

We'll see where this road leads us and will post when I hear more.

Gibson Basses / Babicz FCH...
« on: January 30, 2016, 05:48:50 AM »
I've gone ahead and ditched the Supertones and installed Babicz 3-Points on two of my Thunderbirds.  UK price is £120, so c.$171.

While I have nothing bad to say about the Hipshots, I've gotta say that I like [edit] the Babicz bridges [/edit] a lot...the basses do sound phatter; there's just more of everything tonally if that makes sense.  Also, they're certainly kinder to your right palm if you mute or play close to the bridge.

Other Bass Brands / So I've ordered a Mike Lull JAXT4...

Accumulated too many basses, sold a couple, ordered a Lull.  Call it a midlife crisis if you want.  Cheaper than a Harley.

Gibson Basses / Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays/Whatever you call it.

Unsure whether there's an unwritten rule but seeing as how no one has said it yet, here's wishing you all the best for whatever you celebrate this time of year, along with a happy new year and if possible a belter of a 2015.

Love and hugs

Gibson Basses / I have a question about knobs...
« on: September 13, 2014, 03:49:31 AM »
I have a 1997 Thunderbird...black/white plate.  From the perspective of originality, what is the correct style of volume/tone knobs that should be on it?  It has these:

Gibson Basses / A bit quiet around here.

<tumbleweed>

No news or rumours?  Surely we must nearly be in the silly season where 2015 models start poking their headstocks over the precipice.

Gibson Basses / Could we possibly...
« on: November 25, 2013, 02:22:41 PM »
...have a thread for current basses that aren't showing on the Gibson website?  Just a go to thread for stuff for whatever reason it is that Gibson don't want to promote/feature on their site.

I honestly fail to see how a company can produce new models, new finishes etc and not give a damn about even putting these up on their website (although I do know we're dealing with Gibson here).  Take the walnut Thunderbird, the Midtown Signature, the ES-335 (Memphis) - I'm sure there's been dozens.

Cheers
