Other Bass Brands / 1978 Peavey T-40 Fretless
« on: March 09, 2017, 09:43:05 PM »
Got this one in today from the FedEx guy.  Low 6 digit serial number and a blank plank maple fretless neck!  I'd not seen one before, just the typical lined rosewood board FL models.  This one doesn't even say FL on the headstock.  It has dots on the side where the frets would be ala Rickenbacker.  Still need to do a setup and I want to change the Nylon strings to something I like better.  Possibly TI Jazz Flats in extra long scale.

Not a well known player but one that I definitely noticed back in the late 70's/early 80's.  His Music Man Sting Ray tone on the opening of April Wine's "I Like To Rock" made me seek one out. This was difficult to do back then as they had ceased production of them around 1980.  I did finally find my first Sting Ray Bass, a sunburst '78, in April 1982 for $325 in the Austin American Statesman classifieds section.  :toast:

Sadly Steve passed away February 4th at age 67.

Does anyone know what it is off hand?  I had one in the 1990's but never checked.

Gibson Basses / Grabber Bass with one piece neck
« on: January 01, 2016, 03:19:45 PM »
I managed to snag this one recently.  Had tried to buy it last year but the guy never shipped it so I got my $$ back.  This time it took a while to get to me (two weeks) but was worth the wait.   This is the 3rd one piece neck Grabber to pass through my hands.  All have been pretty much similar in neck shape and weight.  This one is no exception.  Some changed parts of course but plays and sounds super even with the Model 1 pickup.  I've got the bridge cover too but have it off for adjustment access.  It is refinished and has changed tuners although they fit exactly as the old ones did.  I have a truss rod cover on the way but will have to modify it to fit as there is a curved area in front of the truss rod adjustment.  Note the Fender type truss rod screw!  Here are some pics.

Other Bass Brands / 1981 Charvel Prepro Bass

Lucked out and bought this one late last month.  Body and neck both date 08-20-81 and had the EMG's installed by Stars Guitars in 1983.  I have the original PAF Dimarzio pickups but the original pots were gone.  I had an early production (1984) Jackson Concert Bass but this is the first early Charvel bass I've seen in person.  They didn't start with serial numbers until later in 1981. No cause of death given yet.  Loved his funky lines with Abba.

Just picked up a 1990 Asat Bass.  The early ones had the slab bodies and the Leo signature decal on the upper horn.  I thought it looked great next to the 1977 Stingray bass.  :)

Gibson Basses / Tom Scholz' Gibson Bass
« on: January 16, 2014, 06:56:13 PM »
I've always enjoyed the tone on the first Boston LP.  I understand that Tom played on every track but "Foreplay" and "Let Me Take You Home Tonight" which were played by Fran Sheehan.  I read in a 1977 Guitar Player interview that he used a Gibson bass with a Jazz bass pickup installed.  Never have seen a photo of the bass until a recent search.  The article was from last November.  Sort of looks like the J pickup is slanted a bit, and the bass is a slot head short scale EB-0. (of all things!)

Gibson Basses / This one reminded me of Carlo's bass

1960 EB-0 at Austin Vintage Guitars.  Has an added pickup, although I have no idea what kind it was.  Sandwiched between a longscale EB-3 and an old Carvin bass.

Just picked this up yesterday.  I've always wanted one and they are neat basses.  Short scale and Made In USA.  The tort looks similar to what Fender used at the time.  I just threw on a set of old TI Flats so pardon the stringing job.  I have never seen one with a bound neck either.
