Gibson Basses / 1 meg pots and TB Plus pickups
« on: August 02, 2016, 05:07:15 AM »
Has anyone tried this combination? - If so, what were the results? I dig the way my Gibson basses look and play, but would like the stock pups to sound a bit brighter and clearer - a little increased output wouldn't hurt, either...

Gibson Basses / NBD: SG Standard
« on: July 25, 2016, 01:33:09 PM »
I decided to delve into Gibson basses again, and picked up something to keep my Thunderbird company - a 2012 SG Standard bass:

I've been kinda wanting one of these for a while now, made an offer on reverb, and it got accepted... I'm waiting for some fresh strings to come in, then I'll gig it a bit...

Bass Amps & Effects / Mesa 400 tube recommendations
« on: December 16, 2014, 04:30:41 AM »
I have a Mesa 400 on it's way to me, and am considering tube options - it already has 6l6s in it, but I'm pretty sure I want to put kt88s in it, instead... The preamp tubes will probably be left alone, unless there's an issue with them...

Any thoughts???

The Bass Zone / trade question
« on: October 02, 2014, 04:29:42 AM »
I'm thinking of trading my '08 Fender American Standard Jazz for an MIA '13 G&L ASAT Bass that's practically new - even up... The current owner of the ASAT states that it's uncomfortable to play standing up, and that he wants an MIA Fender Jazz...

I'm not very sensitive to neck dive or body position, since I can comfortably switch back and forth between P Basses, Jazzes, T-Birds, EBMMs, etc... - so, the ASAT will probably not be a problem for me - BUT, I did tell him that I'd have to play it standing up before making a deal...

Now, another aspect of this: the Jazz I'd be trading is an outstanding bass, just a flat out perfect Jazz in every way(playability, tone, extremely stable neck, etc...) - however, I also have another Jazz that's killer as well... So, I'd still have a great Jazz bass left, but the ASAT would give me something different in my modest collection...

I'm thinking that as long as the ASAT doesn't neck dive any worse than my T-Bird, doesn't have any issues, and plays as well as the Jazz I'd be trading, I'm gonna go for it - any thoughts/opinions on this potential trade???

Gibson Basses / A newfound respect for Gibson's finish department
« on: September 08, 2014, 09:05:58 PM »
I'm finding out just how difficult it is to law down a quality finish on a Thunderbird body - all those lines and contours are no cakewalk... I've been working on a seafoam green paintjob on my Fenderbird built, and after spending more than a week on the basecoat, I've finally moved on to the clearcoat - unfortunately, I'll be wetsanding out a couple of runs before laying down the next coat - oh well...

The Bass Zone / Further progress with my Fenderbird build
« on: June 10, 2014, 11:41:21 AM »
I'm a little further along, and took a couple of quick pics this afternoon - sorry about their poor quality... I plan to take it apart and paint it seafoam green, with auto grade laquer in the next week or two - then I'll post some more pics after it's all back together... Here it is *for now*:

The Bass Zone / I'm building a Fenderbird
« on: May 20, 2014, 04:01:16 AM »
I've wanted one for awhile, and grabbed a donor Epi T-bird off of my local CL a few months ago for $100, with a hardshell case... I've actually enjoyed playing the Epi, after setting it up and tweaking it to my tastes - and have gigged it a little with great results... This has convinced me that the stock pups will work out just fine, as long as the neck change doesn't alter the tone drastically - we'll see...

I've been scouting for a Fender P neck since then - since the Epi neck was almost 1.7 at the nut, and one of my main players is a Highway One with a similar neck... I was pretty sure I was going to buy a MIM off of ebay for around $200, when my local CL came thru for me again: I picked up an '11 American Special P neck for $125 last sunday!!! This neck is like new, and I LOVE the profile - the only downside is that the tuners aren't very good - I think the seller scrounged them up from somewhere, and used the '11 tuners on a Warmoth neck he had - no biggie, considering... I'm leaning towards springing for some Hipshot HB7s for it - we'll see... I'm going to have a local NAPA mix up a can of seafoam green laquer, and spray the body myself - then put the Epi Goth stuff back on it until I decide what I want to end up with...

I'm taking it down to my luthier to have the body routed out for the neck - then, we'll get this party started!!! Here's some pics of what I have so far:

The Epi Goth neck will probably go on ebay - I sort of hate to part with it, since it's got great fretwork - but I really won't have a use for it once the body is routed out... Anyways, I'll update this thread as the build progresses...

Gibson Basses / NBD: Epi Goth T-bird
« on: March 24, 2014, 09:04:18 AM »
I picked this up off my local CL last friday, and just took a couple of pics... I wasn't really in the market for one, since I already have a Gibson T-bird, but the deal was really good, and came with a factory hardshell case... I've been toying with the idea of doing a Fenderbird build for awhile, so I grabbed it... After a fair amount of cleaning and setup work, it plays and sounds great - actually far closer to my Gibson than I care to admit... I'll probably still do the Fenderbird build eventually - then someone will end up with a great neck for the money... It's an '06 MIK model, and has a nice straight neck, with great fretwork - and no truss issues whatsoever... I spent a few minutes on the nut, moved the strap posts, and it's just about perfect - a real player for the money...

Here's a couple of pics:

Gibson Basses / T-bird tone pot question
« on: August 31, 2012, 12:36:33 PM »
I have an '06 Gibson T-bird, and would like to replace the tone pot - does anyone know if it's a 500k pot, and long or short???

Thanks,   - georgestrings
