Gibson Basses / Bill Walence's EB2 up on Ebay

Just a heads up Bill's (drbassman) Gibson EB2 is up on Ebay. This is one of the last from his collection. Bill always bought quality and took great care of his instruments, you won't be disappointed. https://www.ebay.com/itm/134990212425?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=PtXTjMXzR5C&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=QrNemjUJT7-&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

You guys might enjoy this, Black Sheep's Payn' Your Dues. There are not many examples of the 70s Telecaster bass on a recordings from the time but I find this to be a particularly good example.  The wide range pickup displays what it is capable of in the studio and Bruce Turgon plays some tasty upper register licks.
As a side note I have had the opportunity to work with both Donnie Mancuso and Lou Gramm in the past and I am subbing on bass with Donnie in a few weeks and get to play this song, I'm really looking forward to it.

Sigh. I don't have the energy to pursue this topic any longer, discuss amongst yourselves if you desire. I  am just baffled how they could take something as near perfect as the Vintage Pro and F it up. I need to lie down it's making my head hurt.

More nonsense from the gang that couldn't shoot straight.
While the new colors are great they just couldn't leave well enough alone when they shifted manufacturing from Indonesia to China. They altered the neck angle so the end of the fingerboard is raised about a 1/8" above the body thus forcing the bridge to be raised higher and even necessitating a black plastic spacer under the neck pickup.  Why they just couldn't leave it alone is beyond me.  It's like someone who has never even seen or played a 60s bird gets involved in the planning.  I'm wildly frustrated by this. I guess I'll just scoure Ebay and Reverb for Vintage Pro Thunderbirds.  Oi!

Rickenbacker Basses / Re: Hell has frozen over: The 4005 is back

But those lacked a true neck pup in my book too, I thought the pups too far back!  They changed that on the later worn satin, BFG and oversize LP models btw which I preferred for that reason.

Spare me with 'Jaco'esque' bridge pups, I hate that bony-skeletal sound. The worst thing about Jaco was his sound.
Bridge pups? We don't need no stink'n bridge pups.

Rickenbacker Basses / Re: It’s official … 4005
« on: March 06, 2024, 04:53:02 AM »
As a teen I ran into a used 4005 at the long shuttered Benson's Music in Rochester NY.  Hanging high on the wall it was one of the most beautiful basses I had ever seen.  Expressing intrest Mike the proprietor said " naw you don't want that " he went on to explain how poor they sounded and to prove his point he plugged it in and played it. Transparent is the word I used to describe it's sound then and I still do, I remembered thinking even my Hofner sounds better.
The 4005 is a beautiful bass, I still want one even though I know it won't produce a sound I'll find usable.
Kudos to Rickenbacker for bringing it back!

I'm a little jealous that the epiphone firebird guitars will have options for Frost blue and Heather. Any chance Gibson will follow suit with custom color Thunderbirds too?
  Definitely a identity crisis.
