Gibson Basses / Re: Cleanest 1969 EB-3 at Norm's (+demo)

Back in the early 60s, the long shoremen, field hands, lumberjacks and iron workers who doubled as bassplayers needed extra space for their huge meat hooks to navigate around the controls. As the cultural revolution took hold, Gibson realized the stoner hippies playing psychedelic music didn't need as much room for their dainty girly hands. Just a guess.

The wide space control version of the EB-3 is the GOAT. I would swap my 67' EB-3 and EB1 for one of those in a heartbeat, especially one in white a la Bob Daisley or Pelham blue. A slot head with some jazz bass pickups would be fun to jam along with Boston tunes. That's how Tom Scholtz set his up I believe.

Hey, we're just catching up to the rest of the cool kids around here. I don't envy the youth when it comes to what they're looking at for buying a house now. Fifty isn't really such a huge number. Just fifty thousand bucks gets you that new Jimmy Page double neck. What a deal!  :o

That's a compelling argument in favor of this bass I wish I didn't hear. Moving the output jack (That's what it should be called by the way) off the front is pretty slick. Looks better that way and eliminates the potential for breaks. Still, I'd rather save up for something extra special as tempting as these 64 Epis may be. I'll say it again because it bears repeating.
Gibson simply has to make a fiftieth anniversary Bicentennial Thunderbird for 2026.

Does parallel wiring not sound good with those pickups? Congrats on another successful build.

For a flat top bass, that's not surprising. Most of the carve top guitars would have a pitch to the neck I believe.

Well at least the Les Paul players will feel at home on those. Wouldn't this neck angle make for a less lengthy reach toward the nut end of the neck? Maybe they viewed it as an improvement to the design? I wonder if it will effect sales that much. Most first time Thunderbird buyers may not be bothered or concerned.
By the way, hope you enjoy the eclipse coming up Scott. Looks like you'll be in the path of totality over in western New York. I'm debating whether or not it'd be worth making the drive to see it myself. Those eclipses happen as often as Epiphone China get vintage Gibson specs right.  ;)

Yes, when it comes to Thunderbirds, Epiphone is more Gibson than Gibson. Unless you mean I have guitar envy just because I like purple and blue.  :-\

That's news to me. All the more reason to bring them back with some custom colors and hopefully chrome pickups and the option for a single pickup version. The NRs are still out there but they don't look as good with a 3 point bridge in my opinion.

I'm a little jealous that the epiphone firebird guitars will have options for Frost blue and Heather. Any chance Gibson will follow suit with custom color Thunderbirds too?

If I didn't know who was singing that second Halford song, I would have guessed Neil Diamond.

I'm breathing a sigh of relief with this last storm which is staying to the south of New Hampshire. My snowblower is sitting in the shed with two flat tires I never bothered to get fixed before the season. So far I've managed to clear my driveway with just a shovel. I figure I could use the exercise although it can get a little taxing on the back. Looks like you won't have to worry about any accumulation either morrow. My condolences to any of you dealing with it in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and parts of New Jersey or  Pennsylvania.

One of my neighbors has a business renting out those inflatable bouncy castles. Perfect venue for their reunion tour.

Good thinking Dave, that way the band can dance the monkey or the jerk without having to take their hands off their instruments.

Cool group. Who's going with me to the Ladybird reunion tour? Should be a knee slapping good time!  ;D
