Gibson Basses / Re: Another EB price drop
« on: November 22, 2017, 09:37:57 PM »
Best buy where I'm at here in canada had a demo one for about 499US, the other one was about 599 and then there was a 5'er.  Can't say I was overly impressed with them tho.  They kinda had a cheap import feel to them in a way.

Best Buy in Canada still has instruments in their retail stores? That's surprising. Maybe there's fewer retail competitors.

You're entitled to you opinion, of course, but I can't agree. I've played the one in a local store twice, a natural 4. IMHO the tone is head and shoulders above even the more expensive imports. The feel is of a much more expensive bass. I didn't care for the sunburst finish on the 5er they had, it didn't look good to me in a matte, but otherwise I think they're excellent, especially considering the price.

The problem is that there's nothing about them that says Gibson except the name on the headstock. If this were 1967, these could be starting a legacy. Unfortunately, it's 2017, and Gibson buyers want something that reminds them of traditional Gibson design. That's just the way it is.

Impossible! I thought those things were the pinnacle of passive bass guitar pickups, leaving a trail of knackered up basses with weird square routes in their wake? Honestly I remember a time on Talkbass where any bass that sat still long enough got the Dark Star treatment... glad to hear that you consider my £90 BS-1 pickup to be closer to the original Bisonic than the Dark Star.
...

A longtime local friend bought one of the Chris Hillman Signature Guilds and has been gigging with it this year. Sounds like an original to me.

Same thing happened at the Dudepit as must have happened on Talkbass. Any old beat up 80s plywood import would get posted as "Dark Star candidate?" What really floored me, though, were the guys buying new expensive basses and routing them for Dark Stars, then they'd get tired of them and try to sell them for more than they had invested. That only works for a while, then you run out of customers.

It does look small compared to the Oversize LP Bass. Most long scale LP basses in existence have the guitar size body though.

Wait...your left foot?  ;D

The Guild reissue pickup is certainly truer to the original than the Dark Star.

You're not stepping on his toes. He's obviously not actively selling them.

I did send him a PM Sunday night, no response yet.

It has nothing to do with the bodies, they are as large as on long scale LPs. It's the necks, Dave, or rather the (partial) lack of them!

The actual difference is only 2.6 inches. Not all of the difference in scale length is in the neck.

Didn't he just get divorced and marry some actress...?

Maybe he doesn't have room at her condo.

He did get divorced and hooked up with Daryl Hannah. I don't think they're married.

Wow. You're all fortunate. He really did save you from serious injury or death.

The bass is standard Les Paul size, which is sort of small for a bass. Next to a full size Leg Lamp, it magically looks larger.............  :P

Then it must have been my imagination. It looked smaller. LP-bodied basses aren't really that small, despite Uwe calling the short scale ones hobbits.

There was a period where they were treated like lepers.

Sheryl Crow changed that.

Stopped by Twin Town Guitars yesterday to buy strings, they had a goldtop ES-LP bass with a $3K price tag. Maybe it's because it was high up on the wall, but the body sure looks smaller than I imagined from the photos I've seen, even compared to Grog's photo next to his leg lamp.

I also found out yesterday that the Faded guitar series (LP and SG) now come with maple necks instead of mahogany. I didn't plug in but there was a noticeable difference in unplugged tone between the maple neck and mahogany neck SGs I strummed.

Pick us up a bag next time your in town, Dave... ;)

It's a three hour drive in a direction I haven't been for years. He does sell online https://ellefsoncoffeeco.com/ -- looking at the cart options, looks like he does ship to the UK. If he's selling in grocery stores, I haven't seen it yet.

Apparently the coffee shop had its grand opening this past April and the coffee has been available since late last year. This was just his homecoming appearance.  Best of luck to him.

Great!

I knoe Dave quite well. Last time we talked we discussed the Taylor Swift concert we both attended, haha! And he saved my life once. Will be always greatful for that. Did I ever told that story? He saved my life and that of Victor Wooten, Scott Reeder and many more.

We're waiting!

Sniper last posted on 9/13/16 in the R.I.P Drbassman thread. He last logged in on 12/6/16. This was a couple of years after he was posting about his health issues. Hope he's okay.
