Title: Post Your Music!
Post by: Rhythm N. Bliss on May 26, 2008, 10:35:56 PM
Here's 2 clips of short instrumentals of my trio Godbrothers:

Running The Real Marathon~
http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/7/12/1259521/Running_the_Real_Marathon.mp3

Seaside Soirée~
http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/7/12/1259521/SeasideSoir%C3%A9e.mp3

We don't have a myspace page yet. Wanna set one up....How do ya do that?

So post your clips here or your myspace page links or website links, please.
We've all done this before on other sites, but I think this'll be the first time here at Bass Outpost.

Whatever you do, don't set up a regular myspace account - you want a myspace music account. Here's the signup link:
http://signup.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=bandjoin (http://signup.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=bandjoin)

It's pretty easy once you get it set up - you can upload your songs, pictures, embed youtube videos in your profile, etc.

Here's mine: myspace.com/hieronymous (http://www.myspace.com/hieronymous) - I haven't updated it in a long time - I haven't had new music in a long time! Hoping to record some next month when I go to Boston for a visit...

That chick singer is also mother of my cats and my girlfriend:)

We live in a small two room appartment with two cats, about seven guitars and 15 basses (and cases, ...), lots of DVD's, CD's, books, ... :) In that way it's nice to have a partner who understands you:D

PS: Chick singer and chick guitar player! And Epiphones only:) (No money yet for the real deal)

All of the songs are my bird through my ampeg, except Folsom which is my Heritage through some horrible Digitech thing.

Wow~ Lefty, Barkless & Chrome---You are each a One Man Banned, huh???

Right now anyway. I'm in a cover band that gigs a lot and pays the bills, plus a 2-month old baby, so I don't have the time for a full-time original band, they're hard work. So, I have a nice studio in my home where I can make decent recordings in my spare time.

I play vibrato bass on "Carvings..." and I co-wrote "Alphabet..." All tracked with my Gibson Thunderbird. Of course the band name is in reference to the book written by Saint Paul's own Francis Scott Fitzgerald.

Currently playing with a few old mates in a swamp rock band. They dont practice EVER! just get together 3 times a month for shows. Its a combination of originals and covers. Few bits n bobs from the desk below. The pic below each link is the bass played. If I can kick their arses hard enough I'm hoping to get some of the originals recorded over the next 12 months. Its pretty retro self indulgent stuff but then I dont think any of them really gives a rats...

Had to post this.

This is fellow Adelaide Bassist Tom Crease who is now (since 2002) with great Aussie punk band "Frenzal Rhomb"

I'm not a big fan of a lot of punk but good punk is (IMHO) still good music.

Tom and Gordy make an awesome rhythm section.

Tom plays the MM you see here live through an Eden World Tour 800 and a G&L in the studio.

nice, Pilgrim!  you guys sound great!

Thanks!  All I did was stick a digital camcorder on a tripod at one side of the stage and roll it. The sound was surprisingly good, and it was right in front of the PA and the bass amp, so it picked up bass and it did a nice job of capturing the harmonica on tunes like Peter Gunn.

Incidentally, the bass is my 70's Univox hollowbody with flats, played through an early 80's Bassman 120 solid state combo with a single 15" speaker.

20 years ago I setup a Deep Purple Tribute band here in Australia. I did 3 tours then went off to travel the world etc etc lived in Europe for 3 years via some cool places.

that band just has its 20th Anniversary show last week and is still doing pretty well.

Ironically the bass player is an old school mate who was supposed to go traveling with me. He decided to stay because he had "finally got him self into a band of quality musicians playing real gigs" oh and he met a chick he was pretty impressed with.

The chick lasted 6 months but he is still in the band 20 years later  ;D

I posted this in the "Alembic mania" thread, but thought I would post it here too:

possibilities (http://hieronymous.us/music/possibilities.mp3)

It began with me wanting to record something with a sruti box application (http://www.jhhl.net/iPhone/SrutiBox/) I got for my iPhone. I added a recording of some drums by my buddy Greg DeGuglielmo, then started jamming. A germ of an idea sprouted, and after much overdubbing, I ended up with four tracks of my Stanley Clarke bass - one or two have the new Roland Space Echo pedal, everything (including the iPhone stuff) is compressed by the Custom Audio Japan tube compressor, and the "bass" bass is through my old Fodera Model 2000 preamp. Even the synth part was played on the iPhone - it's the miniSynth (http://www.yonac.com/software/minisynth/)!
Title: Re: Post Your Music!

Cool track!  Very clever use of the iphone.

Have you seen the rjdj app (http://rjdj.me/) yet?  A friend of mine was showing it to me on his iphone yesterday.  It creates realtime soundscapes based on noises in the environment around you.  I don't know if there is a way to dump them to a file to use in recordings (we were just listening to it thru headphones), but I thought it would be a fun, interesting, and personal way to develop ambient tracks to use in a composition.

Wow, that looks really cool! I downloaded something called synthPond (http://), which they call a "spatial sequencer" - interesting, but I'm not totally in love with it. Brian Eno has something too - it's called Bloom (http://www.generativemusic.com/bloom.html) - but I haven't downloaded it yet. Overall, there's some pretty amazing stuff out there!

Hi all!  Newb here, but here are my bands' pages.  I did not do the bass tracks on the recordings for DoHM (was not in the band yet) but everything else is me.

www.myspace.com/animatedrecords - that's my piano/drums/bass jam band.  good stuff.  Recorded with my 2500 Tribute into my Roland rig.  Except Old Man and Fast as Gravity, which is my new Warwick $$.  Oh, and No Reason was recorded with my old BB415.
www.myspace.com/rdsr                  - radiohead/incubus inspired, can't describe a genre.  Recorded with a Kramer 650B aluminum neck bass and an old Crate combo on home recording stuff.
www.myspace.com/dohmsound        - prog metal.  The bass player on the recordings uses a Pedulla Thunderbass through a Fender BXR100 bass combo.  Studio recordings.
www.myspace.com/30shortsongs     - 30 short songs, comedy project with friends.  Recorded on multiple basses.  My Geddy Lee, a no-name P bass, an Ibanez EBX445, my SR506, and my Takamine EG512C ABG, all through home recording stuff.

Still haven't figured out that new Buy feature on the myspace player. Anyone?

Got a few tracks laid down with just the Rhythm Section of my band GODBROTHERS--me an' Joe.
Steven hurt his frettin' hand workin' on a guy's car & while it's healing I talked him into doing some keyboard tracks. He did an AMAZING job on my toon MEGAYANG MINDBENDER RIFFAGE.
The Main Riff is HEAVY & I asked him to play Hammond organ on that--Well, the Triton equivalent anyway.
He ROCKED it!
Then the middle sections he plays piano on--again, the Triton--& really captured the moods.
The 2nd riff is a playful thing that he adds seriousness to but keeps it LIGHT & the 3rd riff is predominantly meant for guitars (including my Bass!) but he adds some slick Rhythmic piano to it too.
Then back to the HEAVY Main Riff with those POUNDING "B-3" chords I asked him to add.

It's SO cool to be creating this music using my Bass as the backbone of each piece & then adding Drums & percussion. Then adding Vocals (unless it's an instrumental) then later keys & guitars.
Can't wait til Steve can shred some guitar on this track....& the rest!

We're gonna place this on our TigerShark myspace page & give credit to Joe as "Guest Artist".
We've already maxed out with 6 tracks on our GODBROTHERS page.
Eventually we'll add vocals & put it on our GODBROTHERS cd.
We hoped to finish cds for both bands this year, but we're goin' s-l-o-w. Alas
Aimin' for Spring 2009 now....

Mighty proud of my guitarist/keyboardist/engineer/producer/bud Steverino!

Here's my latest ensemble: http://www.myspace.com/thesecretcells (http://www.myspace.com/thesecretcells)

"Turn Around" was recorded at our first gig not quite two weeks ago.  The other tunes are clips recorded in the jam room.

I played a Ripper through an Acoustic 320/408 rig for the jam room clips and my 75 Precision through the same amp for the live performance.

Hope ya'll dig it.

Nice song and some tasty guitar work. The bass playing seemed good but a little hard to hear in the mix for me, on my computer.

Thanks for the positive feedback!  I have received many comments about the lack of bass so I jacked it up as best as I could (maybe a little too much).  It's tough to try to remix an audience recording...

Due to the obvious popularity of this tune  ;)   I figured I would put a recent live version done by the Crocs which is the "No practice, throw it all in a bucket and stir band" that I'm with.

Nice!
I have very fond childhood memories of riding in a pickup truck with my Dad going Fishing that "Ring of Fire always brings back. :)
I finally prevailed upon the rest of the Nasty Habits to give this song a try at our last rehearsal, our take is based on Social Distortion's cover of it. Needless to say, it's on the setlist  ............Great song!

I have heard that before. I have no idea what it means as there is no footwear that I'm aware of in Oz called Crocs.  The band is called the Smokin' Crocs. Its a very loose fun band that doesn't take things too seriously but has a lot of fun doing gigs about 3 times a month.

Recently I was cleaning up my shed and came across a video that I had forgotten even existed. I've just started going through the process of moving it from tape to digital (Its a 2 hour show). It is of a Deep Purple tribute band that I played in back in the late 80's.

Here is a sample from the vid. Sorry about the sound as I remember it was just the mic on the camera which was placed at the desk.

Here I'm playing with Assi Geffen live on the Israeli music channel. It's a see-thru TV studio they set up in the Tel Aviv harbor.

You know how TV directors always focus on the guitar and you hardly get a glimpse of the bass? Well this is NOT the case here... I think he liked the white Ric...

The nice folks of CD Baby took care of that for us.

As well as other online stores such as Amazon.com etc

A little while ago I posted in the Rickenbacker forum (http://bassoutpost.com/index.php?topic=2510.msg39984#msg39984) about a new song I recorded with my black 4003, called willowmass (http://hieronymous.us/music/willowmass.mp3).

But I'm also posting another song from the same session that I recorded with my Telembic (Alembicized Telecaster Bass) - this one is called ostronato (alpha-omega mix) (http://hieronymous.us/music/ostronato_alphaomegamix.mp3). I'll post more about it in the thread I have here devoted to the bass, but for now I just wanted to put it up. Unfortunately I don't have any new pics of the bass, but instead of that here's a shot of the beautiful vintage amber Vistalite drums that were used on the session (played by my ever-loyal drummer Greg DeGuglielmo, with whom the song was spontaneously composed):

But cool keys? Where?

Janis has never really been a huge inspiration. Of course having female lead vocals in a bluesy rock n soul band brings out that comparison. But Floor is more into (the younger) Tina Turner and Aretha. Plus Cry Of Love and Badlands etc.
Only recently we've added Janis' "Move Over" to our repertoire. I have to admit that fits her voice really well  ;)

I heard some keys work... if you're covering "Move Over" (post please, when u can), seriously consider "Piece Of My Heart"... that would soooooo suit Floor's voice...  8)

Okay, I thought you were commenting the vid I posted.
Yes, you're right we have some keyboards on our recordings.
We were a four piece (without keys) for years. On CD recordings we just asked some friends of ours to add some Hammond or Rhodes etc.
But we never found the right guy to fit in the band.
Until about a year ago when the keyboard player of my other band joined Superfloor.

I'm afraid I don't have any decent recordings of "Move Over". :-\

No not yet. It's a new song. (Under construction even)

We're working on new songs for a new album.
And just last rehearsal we said to each other it's about time to start pre-production. So we're going to record the new songs in the rehearsal room. And then take the recordings home to try some extra parts (harmonies, guitar dubs, percussion, etc).

Great track Harry- love the improv feel to your stuff too.  Its cool you have a drummer to record with!  I always feel that rhythm programming takes some of the spontaneity out of any recordings that I make, and imposes more structure on them - despite wanting things to be more free form at times.  Still trying to navigate my way around that.

Rob- the band (and bass) sounds great in that clip.  I liked the tasteful stuff in the high register at the end.  Proof that there is life beyond the 12th fret!  ;D

My Original band, formed 8 weeks ago has spent that time writing songs. 12 song ideas culled to 5 for development then culled again to 3 to be recorded. Recording starts tomorrow. Classic rock style, Led Zep/Deep Purple/old style ZZ Top/Allmans etc.

We have a warm up gig with 4 original songs at a small pup on the 18th Feb then we will do the same 4 songs as the middle set of a bigger show by the Crocs on the 26th Feb. This last show will be recorded as well.

Really happy with the Drumming, keys and guitars. I had 2 weeks where I almost didnt pick up my bass which has impacted very badly so I'm not happy with the development of the bass lines or my capacity to play particularly well this weekend  :-[
Originally I planned out a 12 week time frame to get it done based on one 3.5 hour full band practice per week. Producer/Engineer that I want is working at the Port Fairy Folk festival and a few other big jobs he couldn't afford to drop during the next 4 weeks so needless to say that development of the songs is at a point where the arrangements have only just been completed but we haven't had time to polish anything.

Another 4 weeks would have been perfect.

I will post copies when the recordings have been mixed.

another one of my bands - quasi tribute (hate that word)  " Back to the Fillmore"   -  Heavier music from the fillmore east such as - Humble Pie, Zep ,  Hendrix  & Cactus (IMO one of the most underrated bands of all time).

first tune is a cactus cover  - second is a LZ medley we do (did as we are looking for a new singer.  this one bugged out and moved to Tampa with his girlfriend...)

http://www.filefreak.com/myfiles/properties/168591

http://www.filefreak.com/myfiles/properties/168596

both tunes were done on my Fodera 1983 Monarch with  PJ EMG's ( similar bass to wooten's first fodera but mine is actually older - thru a sans amp and direct ampeg b5 right into an apple.  basically live with only vocal overdubs.

Just like the other video I posted a while ago this is one of the new songs that we've been writing.

Greetings folks, and nice to meet you all.  Funkster put a trail of bread crumbs out for a couple of us Bassment-Dwellers, thought I'd peek in.

I've posted this one around a bit, in part because the sound came out so well on youtube.  It's a little hippie-country-thing-gtg we do once a month at a local music co-op/piano restoration shop/mini-music academy here in Greenville, RI.  Here are "The Millrats", doing Dylan... thanks for having a listen.

And yes, that's me on bass downstage.

Not before time, I guess...

This is something I recorded with a band called Front Page at an 8 track studio in '87, prior to putting all the gear in mothballs...

The bass used was the Peter Cook Custom Thunderbird, then loaded with a Dimarzio MB1 and a Dimarzio P replacement by the bridge (completely forgot about that until I assembled this video from a bunch of old pics) recorded directly into the board, so this is as clean a sound of her as I've got at the moment...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qshm6Al4kK8

Three of us from this line-up were the bunch that got together for a few gigs last year; this tune is all very eighties but I still like it; one of the best we did...

I love this part of the site.

I'm getting sick of telling Rob how good his band and playing are..... he has to get a big head sooner or later  ;)

Count, sweet groovin'!

Ken, that bass is amazingly warm and has great presence for a DI jobby. I think I've heard that recording before just without the pics.

Mark D, That is some great sounding blues. The drummer that I do my originals with (Jack Thomson) also plays with Pete Jenkins who has that same blues edge as Richard Madden IMHO.

A singer mate of mine is currently recording an album with his band in the States. He gave me some rough recordings of drums and guitars for one of their in progress songs. I jammed along for a little while and pressed the record button. The results are a bit sloppy and messy sounding but all good fun.

Really quite good... don't get me wrong when I say this but very soundtrack sounding - I listen to a lot of stuff of that ilk and it is something I find very listenable...

Aussie Mark - do you have to subscribe to reverbnation or is it just a UK issue as I just can't get it to come up...?

Bret... that was one of the oldies I sent you ages back - I have some more recent stuff (only on video) but not yet transfered - posted only as a reference to what the Peter Cook sounded like as a clean sound... I have much older rehearsal tapes somewhere from my metal days but I have not seen them in years - lost in the loft... Were you practicing your Geddy on that one...? ;) what did you use...?

Nah, just jamming and over playing as usual  ;) I tend to get a little exited if I'm given too much room  :P
Used the Dean Edge that I picked up for $200 and gutted. Gotoh 201 Bridge, 2 EMG Passive humbuckers from a six string bass and cts pots/ switchcraft jack. The whole bass cost less than $350 and plays great. Ran it through my Ampeg SVP-Pro Preamp as usual and straight into the puter.

Well, I finally have some samples of the indie pop band I was in.  We're getting back together for one show, and we taped our last rehearsal.

http://www.vimeo.com/14305741 (http://www.vimeo.com/14305741)

Note the use of smart phone for lyrics.  This is the new teleprompter.  And, I can see why the fanfret has become my main bass.  I'm running it through the new Eden and an old Peavey 1x15 cab with a JBL in it.

Gary, really great sound and playing, like this a lot !

Talking of indie sounds, I'm currently recording with my little indie band and we are in the process of reconstructing a song by one Herr John D ...

which some of you will know, but not like this, we've changed a song that is made up of three major chords throughout into one mostly played with minor chords in parallel keys and it is only in the last two chorusses that we play it with the original major chords (C, F and G in this case). This is still work in progress ... what you're hearing is naked drums and bass (played on my EB-650) plus Kristin's guide vocals, there are no guitars yet and no final vocs, much less backing vocals or guitar solos yet. But there is a little harmonic bass melody at the start and end of the song ...  :-[, hey, I've never denied my love for Wishbone Ash!!!   Not to mention my little homage to the Brown-eyed Girl Bass line in the second bridge ...

Here is one of our own, VERY busy verse playing and, yes, I do admit*** that inspiration for the chorus bass melody part (two tracked with an EB-0F, one on-board fuzz signal and one clean mudbucker signal) came from Herr Jim Lea's bass riff melody on Slade's Gudbuy T'Jane ...  :-[

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPnpQZnfx04

As before: No guitars yet on this take and the vocals are guide vocals. Bass played (other than the chorus bass melody) was my newish Ripper II. User name raintunes, password plainingjet ...

If you are going to borrow, borrow from the best I say. Very nice and sometimes unexpected note choice. I love things that cause me to double take and hold my attention then win me over. I'd love to hear them both with the full production.
Title: Re: Post Your Music!
Post by: uwe on September 08, 2010, 08:21:48 AM
Note choice covers my inherent weakness: I'm just not fast on bass. Kids who've played bass for two years are faster than me. In thirty years of bass playing I've improved in pretty much everything, but I'm still not good at lightning-fast runs, it's like I have this concrete barrier in me. Must be a physical thing, it certainly doesn't come from lack of playing. So stuck with the realization that no matter what I'd do I'd never be a flashy player, I started looking into notes, melodies, harmonies etc.

And then I noticed that unless you do a fast run on your own in a break or something (and then preferably slapped!), the general public doesn't recognize if you are playing a fast melody run in a song, but they do recognize if you play something slowly melodic and it makes them take notice becaue most people (who are not bass players) don't realize that a bass can be melodic. And frankly, most guitarists I have met have no idea what they are doing harmonically, circle of fifths, parallel keys, they just don't get it at all. In thirty years of playing with guitarists I haven't met one who would be able to answer the question: "What is the parallel major key to A minor?" much less explain what determines a parallel key. Somehow, they know by ear that C major and A minor go together well, but if you tell them that A minor 7 and C major 6 are made up of the same four notes they are baffled. So I'ved learned over time that guitarists find it more impressive if you play a solitary F# to their D major chord than some quick run based around the root note. What gullible creatures they are!  :)
Title: Re: Post Your Music!
Post by: Pilgrim on September 08, 2010, 09:30:00 AM
In my case the guitarists know more theory than I do, but they help me out.  It just takes me long enough to calculate I > IV > V that I can't do it on the fly unless it's a simple repeating pattern that comes around enough to play with.

That's why I like 20/30 takes at rehearsal to get motor memory going. Of course, this doesn't apply to "Who Do You Love", which is just E-EEEE-DD-E-EEEE-DD-E-EEEE-DD, etc.

I have never aspired to the soloist thing and I guess the most important thing to me has always been supporting the song melodically which generally means the vocalist but not always. I used to be able to play very fast when I was gigging 4 nights a week , which I did for about 10 years straight. these days my chops suffer mostly due to not enough time on the fingerboard and averaging 2 shows a month. I can still play reasonably fast but I find it sounds a little stilted now.

Getting back to what you were saying, Speed is only just another tool on the palette anyway. Different ppl have different favorite tools to others thankfully. Cant imagine Duck Dunn doing Victor runs. And as much as Victor impresses me I dont think I'd like to either.

It turns out that we did have a camera crew at our last gig.  Here's the full twin combo rig in action.  It's not broken down into songs, so you get the whole set.  My favorite starts at about 16:30, and our last song.  My vocals pretty much suck.  Serves me right not to get more monitor...

I got into Uwe's stuff.  I like "Jet Plane".  Nice tone and lines.  I like to do some of the same kinds of things.  What bass is that?

"Venus Found" sounds like a fun bass song.  Nicely done.
Title: Re: Post Your Music!
Post by: uwe on October 11, 2010, 06:32:47 AM
Jet Plane is my EB-650 with just a root note low C overdubbed with my GR Boutique Telecaster towards the last two chorusses (the ones where we settle from minor A to major C).

Jet Plane turned out rather REMish and somber which is exactly what we aimed for. John Denver's Über-folksy tearjerker is a strange choice for an indie band but it developed from a jam when we were fooling aound with the song and noticed that everyone liked the original. But I knew we couldn't get away with playing C/F/C/F/C/F/G throughout verse, bridge and chorus, hence I started fooling around with the chords (which still allow the original lead melody to be sung).

Is it that audible that Venus Found is basswise a free for all? : - ) I'm at liberty to do what I want during the verse and you wouldn't think I'd let that opportunity go by, would you? I nevber play those parts twice the same. What you hear is a Ripper II. And an EB-0F in (on board) distorted and clean mode on the chorus playing that melody.

My wife for one was very excited hearing the John Denver cover Uwe.  Tomorrow will be the 13th anniversary of his death in the plane crash.  We were lucky enough to see him October 4th of that year at the beautiful Bass Concert Hall here in Austin, just days before his death.  We both got to shake his hand  and I was able to find a well worn Fender Medium pick on the stage after the show.  She is a huge fan and has all of his LP's and CD's.
Title: Re: Post Your Music!

If Denver was still around today, he'd have done his "Rick Rubin" album in the vein of Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Kris Kristofferson and Cat Stevens already and be reappreciated, deservedly so. Jet Plane is just three chords throughout (verse, bridge and chorus are identical) but you would never know it from listening to it, the vocal melodies create such a nice build-up. And the lyric encapsulates how you feel when you are bound on a trip away from your family and don't really want to go. Very poignant.

Roots / Americana stuff from my virtual two man band. The first 8 (right now) are originals. Most of the tunes were done using my DarkStar P-bass. A couple of the covers have me EUB and doghouse. "Losin' Sleep" ia a Dano '56 reissue with tapewounds. Almost all of the amplification is 6 watt tube amps through an old Kustom 2x15 cab mic'd with a SM57 into an old analog board and then into PTs.

Nice slide show / video.

Is that a Waterstone bass you're using?

Yes. I also used my Hamer neck/custom body 12-string and a Telecaster and non-reverse T-Bird IV. Hiwatt DR103 was the main amp.

Wow, talk about necroposting. I had no idea we had one of these threads going. I already contributed to the outpost CD, but I might as well add to this thread.

Here's my current band - We do a sort of garage-revival thing:

And this is my previous band, with Don Bolles from The Germs/45 Grave/Fancy Space People as the frontman:

Here's the first properly recorded (but not mixed yet; still gotta wire up the outboard rack patchbay at the studio - smart me got the preamp rack done first... so this is an ITB as-tracked mixed with little done to it, can't wait to spread this and the other sonmgs from this session out on the console) thing from my current band, LIPP.  It's kind of an in-between number for us; about half our stuff is punky  and the other half is pretty shoegazey, with some tanngents into other areas, most of it tending to the minimal.

You might like this band if you're a fan of Mission Of Burma, Unwound, Pixies, Husker Du, early 80's arty punk meets noisy 90's rock. If that all sounds like not your cup of tea then you likely won't like this band.  ;)

Yep (also backing vox; the basso in this tune, and lead on one track so far; The lady and the other guitard trade off leads most of the time, about half and half).  It's been bugging me how I didn't have my ring mod set right for the second movement there.  The resonances should be screechier.  I'll fix it with EQ when I do the proper mix (finally got the studio patchbay wired up).

My band just put out a tape (alright, alright, I know, poke yer fun and let's be done with it).  Turned out a lot more punk than expected, probably due to recording it with local punk legend Jimmy Vapid.

http://lipp.bandcamp.com/

All songs are A Gibson Triumph through a Kustom 100 and Musicman 115RH cab, except Story of a Revolver on which I used my RD Artist (the jack turned out the be wonky so I cut in and out all over the place; think it kinda works that way for the most part so we left it).  Wish I used my EB3 on Work Ethic (and maybe PPCLI<3U), but it was in dire need of a setup and I didn't have enough time before the session.

Four songs. Two of them are originals.
I used the trusted combination of the Ampeg V4B plus my Gibson Les Paul Bass.
But I dialed in a bit more grit on the Basscreamer.

We have a bunch of stuff up at www.nancyjohnson.co.uk.  You'll find a download/listen link on the home page.

We've recorded two full collections (funF and wedgie) and there's a live set up there as well.  I also spent a few days trying to liven up funF as well, so the reboot is up as well.  We got picked up by a small pop/punk label called Punkalicious and hope to have something official out through them at some stage.  They've said that it's OK to have our stuff up until such a time that they say otherwise, so get it for nowt now.

Cheers
Paul

This is one we've been kicking around for a couple years and the guy who wrote the riff finally came up with lyrics this year.
I'm really liking the bass sound on this.  It's my go-to combination these days: Gibson LPB-1 through a Genz-Benz Shuttle. I took a line out of the Shuttle direct to the recorder (an "old" Metric Halo Mobile IO feeding into Garage Band).

We recorded several songs like this, guerilla-style in our rented rehearsal space - basically just pointed a couple of SM-57s at the guitar amps and another at the snare, put up a couple of SM-81s for overheads and a Beta 52 for the kick;  took the bass direct from my preamp; crammed all that into 8 channels and tracked all the basics live.  I tried to keep my room volume down to avoid overwhelming the toms in the overheads... with mixed success, on some songs the bleed is crazy (and not in a good way).   Guitar solos and vocals were overdubbed later.

Here are the two covers that we recorded

One is an oldie from Grand Funk Railroad. We changed a few bits to make it fit in our repertoire.

And the other is a Masters of Reality song, which also got a Definition of Madmen treatment ;-)

Thank you guys.
It's actually not a fuzz. It's a combination of two pedals: Technophobia Basscreamer and the Tech21 VT bass.
I have no idea how I did it, to be honest. The whole recording session is one big blur...  :o

With the beard and that shirt you would fit in just fine on lower Westheimer having a plate of enchiladas with one of Houston's most well known bearded sons and semi recluses - he also dabbles on a six string ;D

Oh, and I liked the song a lot.

don't know if this is the right place, for this, Mods please move if neccesary

I was inspired to fire up a computer that has lain dormant since 2008 to get this online,

partially out of guilt that I got my claws out when someone mentioned Def Leppard which was not fair on the boys, and especially as someone the posted Love bites video

partially inspired by the other threads about quitting music

This is what I used to do before I "quit " the music industry

this was what was on the screens behind the band on their 2005 greatest hits tour

Its a live video mix using two operated cameras which I was calling, and 5 static Lock-offs, this was layered using two video mixers (one operated via a midi footswitch) with live triggered video loops(the stuff from the music Video) and realtime effects (the lensflares) again all live triggered.

Its a live mix i was most proud of as evidenced by it ending up on my showreel

this is the recorded output of what  went to the screens, the audio is a line out from the sound desk.
This I think shows that they are soo much better live without all the overproduction of their records, and puts lie to the claim they couldn't  do the harmonizing vocals live.

Also of note is the Coda, Viv Cambell is an amazing guitarist, but he is constrained throughout the show to replicating Steve Clarke's Solos almost note for note. the outro for love Bites is the only place in the show where he is allowed"off the leash" I used to look forward to it as every night for the whole six months, he did a different, amazing , improv solo

enjoy it now as it will probably get taken down by their management :(

I'm not a moderator, but I think "post your music" can include "post your live music video work" :)

Thanks for sharing, that was great. And not many of us have had the chance to have our work enjoyed by 10000 people at once.
If I had done live video for Def Leppard I would probably never shut up about it!

Were you on the 2006 leg of the tour? I think that was when I saw them at Jones Beach with Journey.   Great show.

No, it's my Tyyster Telecaster (like a '68 Tele) and P-bass for the middle part. There's also some distorted fretless Aria SB700 in the middle ssection and Yamaha CS-5 synth. :)

Ricky was used on this song:

Thanks, though I have to admit that I used a delay for that bass riff and for the whole song. The riff was composed using a delay and is quite impossible to play without one. At least for me. :)

And while we tracked the drums the bass delay was a bit off so I had to overdub all the bass parts except the middle section and play the line without the delay so we could add it later and sync it good to the click track. That took some time and thinking too. :)

Thank you very much! Both very done separately 'though and were only combined about two weeks ago. I wasn't there but I believe the film was cut a bit to fit to the music and the music extended a bit.

But if the overall impression is that what you said I won't explain too much to spoil the image. :D

This is a cut down version of a longer track my prog/space/metal band came up with. I'm playing bass (Cort B74 with am Epi Thunderbird pickup in the neck) through a Hartke Bass Attack I modded for better midrange response. The sound is pretty dry as this is all recorded straight into the mixing desk. Drums are Roland V Drums. The guitarist also sings. We sometimes have an analogue synth player on board as well, but not here!

Well fellas, I've been working on this original band for over a year now. No, we're not one of those "we have to rehearse everything until it's PERFECT" bands. We're just all in our 40s and 50s, and it's hard to get everyone in the room together. Anyway... finally got a great mix of our first single "the Take". Have a listen! Big, big Fixx fan. Are you hearing that, or are you just messing with me?  ;D A co-worker (suburban soccer-mom type) mentioned the Police. Must just be the clean guitar sounds?

Taurus is awesome. I don't use the real ones live, but rather Roland PK-5 through a Roland Juno-G.

I knew that from back in the day; you wore your fandom on your sleeve (but yeah, there is a bit of that in there for sure, among the other things).

Not so Police-y to me.  Very different in terms of playing style and tone, and busier arrangements because it's not a trio (or it doesn't sound like one anyway).

Another major influence. I'm really glad we went with violin instead of a keyboardist. He plays a 7 string that goes down to guitar drop-D in pitch through a full guitar rig. Pretty amazing. He also plays a couple times a year with a Tool tribute where he does all the guitar parts.

Sounded great Tom! A bit like FM but much harder. Like a cross between them and UK but without keyboards. Good singer, his tone reminded me a bit of Ian Anderson.

Thanks Pekka! The singing thing is a bit scary, but I'm going to power through it and see what the general response is. We decided early on to go for it without a keyboardist, but wanted another sound source, so we found ourselves a great violinist. I'm really just having fun with this, and drawing from late 70s/early 80s prog like what UK, Rush, FM, and Crimson were doing around that time. Tracking drums and bass for 3 more songs on 3/6.

I'm the guitarist on stage right who has the technical difficulties at the beginning I switched to guitar this term because the guy I get on best with at college is also a bass player so to be in a band with him I had to trade down

Finally the vinyl! I'm pretty pleased that two albums that I've played on and written some stuff too are out on vinyl. Sort of a childlike dream ever since I started playing and buying records. :)

Both available from me if anyone is etc. The second album is also available on separate cd, the first one comes with a cd. PM me

The last gig with the ol' SG Bass ......

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viCJc3xy2Vc

I wrote Standin' On The Corner, it's followed up by Last Hope's Gone which is a Paul Butterfield / Dave Sanborn / Phil Haynie song. Should you wonder: the bass riff on the latter is a Gil Evans rip-off ( The Barbara Song, IIRC )

There were lots of big acts. We opened on the b stage on the other side of the venue from the main stage. Seether and Korn were some of the bigger acts on the main stage that day. My girlfriend said all the security put their ear plugs in at the same time right after we started. It's the loudest I've ever played but Cane Hill was ridiculously louder on the same stage the next day. Avatar from Sweden was there on the second day and the put on a great show with lots of theatrics. Hell yeah, Vinnie Paul's current band had to follow them and it was a tough act for them to match. It didn't help that the singer's voice was shot. Crobot put on a great show too. They have a great frontman and did a nice job covering Cochise by Audioslave in honor of Chris Cornell. I had a chance to talk to their bassist backstage. He's a lefty and played a Mexican jazz bass that day. I told him he should keep an eye out for some left handed Gibsons coming out in 2018. He seemed pretty keen on checking out the EB.

Thanks, that's a 35" scale Peavey Millenium strung with Heavy Ken Smith Burners, tuned in D standard going into a GK 1001 RB-II with a 4x12 GK neo cabinet. Very easy to dial in a tone that cuts through the guitars with the sweepable mids on the millennium plus the GK rig is no slouch either. Best $400 I ever spent on a used bass and the bird's eye maple board adds a nice touch.

The band I play drums in just finished an EP with a old dude who used to do front of house for (among others) Bon Jovi (in his heyday not post haircut).  Quirky drone/shoegaze pop. IMHO this isn't even the best track off the EP; band leader holding back for a more elaborate release.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwOJ1jyPOrY

Band I play bass in is currently mixing.  The song I wrote didn't make it cuz the drummer (who may have kinda dropped out of the band due to working on a documentary of The Punks; not actually sure if just extended break while we mix or not - been meaning to call him up and say hi) couldn't nail a take he was happy  with.  Might just redo that one myself, cuz goddamn it it's my only song on the entire record (I sing on a few others).

Thanks!!  I was using my trusty Genz Benz Shuttle through the house cab, an Ampeg 410, I forget which model.  The cab was a bit mushy for my taste. There was a direct out from the preamp, post EQ, to the board.
I've sung the praises of this bass and preamp combo many times here... It just always makes me happy.

I do set the preamp for a touch of overdrive as my normal sound, but for this song I wanted a boost, so I brought my overdrive... a Keeley modded Boss BD2 from back when Robert Keeley used to sell modded pedals. Drive was set somewhere roughly in the middle and I turned down the tone a bit so it wouldn't be too harsh through the direct out. I could tell there was quite a bit of me in the mains because I was hearing quite a bit of subwoofer on the stage. I only had about one minute to tweak knobs before we started so I just had to hope that everything worked out. I think it did!

Ah, I assumed there was some added spice in the recipe. The more bass the better. Everyone should not have to strain to hear us. Bands sound better when the bassist is heard and not content to cower in the background. Three cheers for the sound man!

It's getting harder and harder to find sound guys who understand this. Everyone wants to homogenize everything/mix every band the same way.

We got an mp3 of the entire show here... mostly originals, about 3 covers.
This was nominally a soundboard tape, but it sounds to me like there's at least some room mics mixed in.
Bass is kinda mushy but at least it's loud :)

"Ebony, heritage cherry, or TV yellow finish.  Introduced: Late 1991. Ebony finish discontinued, tobacco sunburst optional: 1992.  Ebony, classic white or heritage cherry finish: 1993."

I still haven't bought Rob's book!  Maybe he knows :)

Rob's page on the Special has a photo of a cherry 3-knob passive LPB-1. You won't find anything that we haven't discussed here but it will help spread the word that it exists.

I wondered if the "TV Yellow" mentioned by Gruhn's might actually refer to a TV Yellow Burst, since I've seen a few other Gibson models with black-on-yellow burst described that way. But apparently not - a pure yellow LPB-1 did exist!  https://reverb.com/item/3630409-gibson-les-paul-bass-1992-tv-yellow

Hmm. Nowadays gibson calls this color scheme "vintage sunburst".  http://www.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/2018/USA/Les-Paul-Junior-2018.aspx
ALthough that one has more of an orange tint than mine.

Er... much to my surprise... well, not... band I'm playing with finally have a CD release due later this month, entitled "The Devil Inside"... 12 tracks; all originals... I play on 11 of them, with an acoustic-esque reprise as an outro 12th track... the PC gets 5 outings and the fretless RD gets 6 tracks... first release in 30 years... doesn't time fly... ;)

Facebook page is linked below...

Susanna Wolfe Band (https://www.facebook.com/SusannaWolfeBand/)

Scheduled release date is 27th July... I think on iTunes first... CDBaby are pressing up CD's
As soon as we have a track up to listen to I'll place a link up... it's not going to light up the world, and I'm certainly not going to get any playing awards... just music with a bit of "Americana" thrown in...
This is a mock-up of the CD cover; the finalised cover is now up on the FB page

Shalom...

The singer and guitarist have got someone backing them to play a decent but small prestige venue in Inverness to play the whole recording (skipping the reprise of one song), and a couple of intro/outro numbers, for a private audince, which they may also film...
As you say, I'm happy with the overall sound... will be using the basses I used on the recordings live, and maybe an EAB on the very laid back fretless number...

The bass is a 1972 Eb4l with 66 Eb0 pickup in the front and a Thunderbucker added by the bridge, which is a Hipshot. The Thunderbucker has a coil tap,but i didn't use it on that tune. It's strung Right handed because i learned that way and i kind of like it-it makes sense to my brain to have the bassy string on the bottom!

@tore00

When I was much younger, I studied some Spanish and Portuguese.  In time, though, I realized it's unlikely I'll ever visit any Spanish-speaking or Portuguese-speaking countries.  Several months ago, I began getting interested in Italian.  Spanish, Portuguese and Italian are all sister languages of course.  Hopefully, some day I might get to visit Italy.  All my friends who have vacationed there said it's great.

The other two countries I'm interested in visiting some day are Israel and the Netherlands.  In the case of the Netherlands, I've already been there four times, but hope to keep going.  It's true, for example, that almost all Dutch speak English.  But if you're over there in a room with 20 people who all know Dutch and English, they are going to mostly use Dutch.  I don't know how it is in Italy and Israel, but that's the way it is there.  I've never been very good with foreign languages and don't expect to become fluent in any.  But it makes things more interesting to at least learn some basics.

I noticed in the Luca Rovini bio that it said he started singing in English.  However, he switched to Italian, obviously.  As far as I'm concerned, that's something good.

Just like me, then. Learnt spanish when I was about 20, but found out that heat/sun was not for me. After an Ill-fated trip to Spain many moons ago, my wife and I spent more time in the Holland/Belgium region.  So I bought a book, still trying to learn to read/speak dutch. At a brewery tour in Flandern, I learnt that dutch is not too far from norwegian (the guide spoke slowly).
And what beautiful language :)

It's strange that our experiences turned out to be so similar.  I didn't plan for things to go in the direction they did and I doubt if you did, either.

Norwegian is similar to Dutch in that they both rely on word order rather than case endings (like German does.)  In general, though, I find Germanic languages to be somewhat difficult when it comes to pronunciation.  I'd say Danish is the hardest to pronounce because of the glottal stops.

I don't know how it is in Italy and Israel, but that's the way it is there.  I've never been very good with foreign languages and don't expect to become fluent in any.  But it makes things more interesting to at least learn some basics.
In Israel most people can speak English - especially if you're in Tel Aviv, where you should be (Jerusalem is boring and packed with weirdos). I have an 80 years old neighbor who came here from the US sixty years ago, and she still speaks not more than 200 words in Hebrew. She always gets by with English.

Me and Luca were friend when I was studying at Pisa University. He was born in Pisa while I was coming from Southern Italy. It was 25 years ago.  I was already playing bass and we were introduced each other by common friends. We never played in the same band but we were going to each other concerts and had many evenings together talking about music and having a drink.
Then I moved to Milan for work and left Luca and many good friends in Pisa, but they went to my housefor concerts, sport events and so on..

I was really amazed when he went out with his records. He is in national newspapers here in Italy, that wonder how such a guy may play American music, being born under Pisa leaning tower.

No wonder for me, both grew up with such music in our ears. Give a try to Luca songs. I know that will be weird in Italian but they come from his heart

When you blend different things together like that you can come up with something unique.  I can't imagine what it would feel like, though, to see someone I knew personally to receive national attention like that.  That would probably be an unusual but good feeling.

I know someone in Denmark that I talk to a lot although I haven't been there yet.  Yes, Norwegian and Danish do look very much alike when you see the written languages.  But Norwegian sounds much more like Swedish.  Somebody once jokingly said that Norwegian is Danish spoken with a Swedish accent.

Reminds me of the time when my ex's parents, born in Romania (and emigrated to Israel in the early 50's), went to Italy in their retirement years, two days after they got there they realized they understand everything they hear, a couple of days later they realized that if they speak very simplified Romanian in an Italian accent, everybody understands them.

Maybe this should be branched off into a foreign language thread.  This is getting interesting.  I only heard Romanian once.  Some people were speaking it in an elevator.  It sounded very much like Italian.  But at the same time the Slavic elements were very evident.  Something which was no surprise to me since I had read about the Slavic influence in the area.  It sounded like a hybrid Italian-Russian language to me.

I can sometimes understand Danish well but I suppose it depends on where in Denmark I am. It seems like the more south of Jylland I'm at the harder it gets. I always try to understand Danish and speak Swedish in return. Often that works perfectly, but in some cases the conversation is forced into English.  ;D

Slowly working on tracks for a second album with my old (late 80s) bandmates. Doing it with all three guys living in different parts of the country (each having family and work commitments) makes it a little time consuming. This is the only one we've had mixed so far. I used a Fender P with D'Addario Chromes>Sansamp BDDI>Focusrite Saffire Pros>GarageBand (I recorded the part with three different basses and let the singer/writer choose which one he preferred).

Wow, thank you! To me, the song just called out for that precise click you get with flats and a pick. My first couple of passes (on my SB350) were busier, but each time I came back to it I felt I needed to back off and keep it simple. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Feel free to use this idea. After the singer says, "singing songs about the southland" transition into some sicilian folk song for about 8 bars and then go back in to Sweet Home. Or not, but keep up the good work either way.

The drummer in my main band was up for a rare visit, so we taught him some new songs! We usually record our rehearsals on one phone, so I had the bold idea to use two phones in different parts of the room to make a crude stereo image. I quite like the results.

Thanks! I was "ripping the heed aff it" on my P Bass in those clips. The vocals always suffer in the rehearsal room. The PA/speaker setup is always poor. They use head-height monitors on poles, pointing right back at the microphones. This causes feedback unless you tilt the speakers off at weird angles and EQ out any problem frequencies. That, and you're singing into SM58s that look like they've been up a dog's butt, so you don't want to get too close!

This is from yesterday, with a different room:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlNQ_RY-SY8

My rig was very random. I borrowed an Ibanez Artcore bass with two small hunbuckers. This was running into a Boss ODB clone, then into a Ernie Ball HD-500 'Audiophile' combo amp. It had a tube in it, and sounded boxy on every setting.

Again the vocals sort of take a bath. Again we were teaching the drummer the song as we went along.

Finally one with me playing bass.  Cursed session though; can't even blame covid for that... completely.  It's quiet and a bit noisy, but it's done and out there; we have new stuff to record now.

Some of the songs get pretty sludgey so you've been warned, but the first few (and the last one) y'all might not mind.

All using me hobbit except for some of the harder ones which are the RD.  We tracked in 2017 so I don't even remember. .. the last one might actually have both in the latter half.
