Title: Stolen basses
Post by: Dave W on August 29, 2011, 06:22:23 AM
This is for basses and other instruments which have been stolen from forum members and/or their band members or friends. Please, let's keep it clear of notices from people we don't know. Thanks.

Thanks, Dave!

My Jerry Jones Neptune Longhorn Bass 4 was stolen from Mitch Easter's Recording Studio, The Fidelitorium, in early August, 2011. Other instruments were stolen but two were recovered (G&L and a Guild) in a pawn shop in Winston-Salem, NC when the thieves tried to pawn them.

This is my 1973 Burgundyglo 4001 Rickenbacker bass serial # MD1582.

It was one of the last made before the transition took place. It has checkered binding, full with MOP inlays, toaster neck p/u, horseshoe RI bridge pickup with original 73 retangular surround, split bridge tailpiece, Grover wave tuner machines. Dark Burgundyglo with minor belt rash on the back of the body down to the bare wood. Minor crack in pickguard between edge of the toaster p/u and the upper side of the pickguard.

She's been gone for the past 4.5 yrs and I would love to get her back. I have a feeling it's in the Maryland or DC area.

Would sure love to get her back. Please let me know if you ever happen upon it.

Thx,

TD

Update regarding the break-in in which my JJ was stolen. This morning I spoke with the detective for the first time in quite a while.

Both suspects in the break-in have been apprehended but during unrelated incidents. One was caught in a routine traffic stop and got hit with felony drug charges.

One suspect claims his grandfather gave them the instruments. The other claims they bought them (the two which were recovered at a pawn shop) for $40 just prior to attempting to pawn them.

Neither admits to having anything to do with the break-in at the studio. The detective thinks it's more than likely the prosecutors and the two hoods will come to some sort of plea agreement because of the number of charges.

I miss my Longhorn!

Well, no new info on the bass, but my friend's band just released their album on which my JJ is featured. The band is Lake Isle from Greensboro, NC. The album is "Winter Lights" and my JJ is featured on "Blue Angel".

Damn that bass sounded good.

Gonna call the detectives again tomorrow.

Why not? You got paid by the insurance company, didn't you?
Title: Re: Stolen basses
Post by: Denis on November 16, 2013, 06:14:26 AM
It's done. Mitch Easter reimbursed me for it since the studio's insurance wouldn't cover it. At the very least I'll have an address the cops can visit to try and track down the other instruments.
Thanks to Joe for tipping me off!

Denis did you buy it back ?
Title: Re: Stolen basses
Post by: Denis on November 16, 2013, 08:29:21 AM
I did and then left a message for the detective once I got home and retrieved his phone number. With luck this will help the detectives with leads on the other instruments not yet found.

That's great news. Hopefully, the news gets better and they find the original thieves.

They caught at least one of the two thieves late last year but I had not heard back from the detective about the trial or any plea deals. If this really is mine, and the guy on the auction stated it's a 2004, as was mine, then here is clear evidence he was in possession at one time.

The pattern of the wood grain on the headstock is identical to yours, the two dark specks near the D tuner are a dead giveaway. Congratulations on finding your bass back. :)

Wow. Good going, Denis.

Are you picking it up in person? I wonder if this is an individual or a pawnbroker. Wonder if it's a fencing operation.

Thanks, guys! I'm going to try t drive out today to pick it up. It's abut a 3 hour drive from here so it will be an all day road trip.
I''m debating whether to tell the guy it was stolen or just say nothing and let the detective look into it Monday.

THoughts?

Agreed, say nothing. You don't want to let the seller know directly in case he might knowingly be receiving stolen goods. Let the detective handle it.

Well, the JJ is back in my hands. The owner was in his late '50s or early '60s and said he was going through a divorce.  He's sold tons of old Mopar parts on eBay as well as a number of guitars and guitar related items. The only question I asked about the history of the bass was "it's an unusual bass to find around here, how did you come across it?"

He said he trades back and forth with a dealer he knows who frequently comes up with guitars he would buy if they were interesting. Now he's having to sell off a bunch of things.

After talking to him in person for about 45 minutes I really don't think he has any idea it was stolen. I felt he was trustworthy and honest and nothing he said was shady in the least. The JJ came in a TKL case and had a guitar strap inside, so at least I got a case for it!

The bass itself is still in great shape with only one or two more scratches or dings on it when I owned it before. There's residue on the back of the neck where tape had been placed, I don't know why.

Good that you heard his story and left it at that. But whether it was the dealer who traded it to him or someone that dealer got it from, somebody knows something, and since this didn't travel too far from where it was stolen, I'll bet the trail is short enough for the detective to figure it out.

As long as it doesn't interfere with his donut shop run.

Apparently he had tons of cars. If I'd run across him 2 years ago I could have bought an awesome car off him: ex-Virginia State Police '72 Fury. Had been storage for years, complete and he sold it for $800.
