Title: BillyBo, my "summer" project
Post by: drbassman on October 16, 2009, 04:44:01 AM: I've decided to do a BillyBo for myself. This is a basswood body, cut on a CNC machine by a friend in California. It's gonna have a Fender Mustang profile neck, TV Jones pups, maybe a mahogany or cherry top over cavities for a nice hollow tone, probably faux binding. I hope to get to it in the next month or so after I finish up the M-85 polishing.

Post by: Dave W on October 17, 2009, 11:15:47 AM: From what I can tell, it was a special Gretsch called the Jupiter Thunderbird that they produced for Bo Diddley in the late 50s. He gave his to Billy Gibbons, one thing led to another and Gretsch issued a modified version of it as the Jupiter Thunderbird Billy Bo guitar, then a bass version. I think the bass is now discontinued. You can still buy the guitar version for 2.5K or so.

It's so ugly some people love it. Not I. YMMV.

Opps, not my intent! I just got an offer from a buddy with a CNC machine who offered to turnone out for nothing for me. Couldn't resist that offer!

And what's so ugly about jetstar basses? I've two of them both DeArmond and reissues one shortscale and one medium. Don't like the mediem scale that's a rather cheap one. The shortie is a great bass. Would like to own one true vintage one.

So you've got accurate tracing for both or you're going with your own aproximation drawings?

The BillyBo is a computer rendering of an actual Gretsch body, so it's pretty accurate. The Jet Star I was gonna guess, but now I have someone to beg a tracing off of!!!! :mrgreen:

Could I beg a tracing of the Jet Star from you?? I'd be happy to send you a tracing in return. I have T-Birds, reverse and non-reverse and a bunch of hollow body stuff!

I do all my work pretty much by hand, and I don't even use body shape templates, each and every guitar is shaped by hand, but if I had easy access to a CNC machine I would use the heck out of it!
I mean, look at that! I know there is a level of programming expertise to be able to do that, but right now I'm sitting here surfing the web and I could easily be programming a body, an inlay or even an arch top instead of just browsing here on the forum.

Some day maybe...

We get nice long summer days here, even longer in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland... shame about the weather... ;)

The elder and retired members of my family in Michigan go cross-country skiing; not a lot of that going on in the UK...

I know what you mean! I spent 19 years of my life working for an outfit based in Binghamton, NY. For most of that time we manufactued there and it was also where I went several times a year for meetings and training. We entered through the side of the building and this was where the smokers hung out since it was covered - they would write the date that the sun was seen on one of the support posts for fun - lots of days in between the sunny day ;)

Post by: Highlander on October 31, 2009, 05:19:09 PM: Towards the end of my apprenticeship where I had previously spent 16 months on the "American Fleet" (Boeing 707's & 720's, 747 100's & 200's, DC10-30's), I was transfered to the workshops situated in the centre of what was known as the "Brabazon" hanger (a failed British design, due to the onset of the "Jet-Age"); once we went back to GMT I would not see daylight during working hours - no windows, 4 storeys up, neon lights, all... day...

Worst job for an instrument mechanic (well, nearly the worst - anything to do with "Skydrol" hydraulic fluid would be hard to top; the stuff just eats skin...!) on the fleet was a P&W JT9D oil change... one time, on a stormy winters night, with the engine cowling flapping round my head; snow was coming down thickly and sideways and I was stuck with an oil change... so, what does oil have to do with an instruments engineer...? yes, it's a fluid, therefore a quantity which has to be measured, and the "oilys" didn't do that sort of stuff... I think I had to get 16 quarts of oil in whilst the other engineers calibrated the levels; couldn't use gloves and the cans were sticking to my hand... oh the fun an apprentice could have...

We did get a bit of fall color because Central TX is actually quite green and the trees are mostly deciduous, but fer cryin' out loud, it got over 90 in May and didn't get under 90 until November! November through April was the best season.

Most of them are typically red. I'm thinking maybe something different, like a white or seafoam green.

Don't know about the frets really, it's just what I wanted. Typical Fender only has 19 or 20. I don't play beyond 19 anyway!!! ;)

This stuff is plastic of some sort, not celluloid. I do have some celluloid stuff and you do have to be careful with it.

Funny you should ask! I haven't decided yet, but I was toying with the idea of a fin-like shape, mirroring the body. Or, something 2+2 like the typical Gretsch version. The headstock is uncut at present.

I just snagged two Gretch Trons off eBay, same one's Pilgrim just bought. I like that look on this bass and the price was too good to pass up!

Yep. I've built neck 5 different ways and I decided to do it this way once to see how it went. So far, I'm happy with the process. Keeping the back, top and edges flat throughout most of the building process sure makes working with it easier. Using the binding as an edge for the bearing was nice and easy. I'm sure I'll have to clean my sand paper often when I radius the board, but I use 3M gold and it cleans very easily with a small wire brush.

The next thing I'll do is finish the headstock shaping and sanding, then the radius sanding and fret installation while the back of the neck is still flat. Finally, I'll do the neck profile on the back and I think that's it!

Have you thought about picking up a cream colored chickenhead knob and aging it? You know soak it in black coffee, expose it to highly concentrated cigarette smoke - it would become amberish ;D

And, Doc, the pickups just make this one. The top is just much too pretty to cover up with opaque - it screams for a trans color.

Thanks Mike! The Allen Woody bass, if you look closely, has the bridge pup moved closer to the neck, away from the bridge. It gives the bass more low end tonality IMHO.

I'm definitely using chrome as I like it better with the pearl accents. The Gretsch are easy enough to get, but I might just go with chrome barrel knobs since I'm not trying to make this entirely like a Gretsch.

You're right Chris, I forgot that! Oh well, I just thought that style tuner was perfect for this particular bass. Sorry to make your life difficult! I've always wanted one of these too, but the price is just plain silly that Gretsch has on these. So, from now on, I'm just building what I can't afford! BTW, I play my 4005 clone all the time, it's become my main bass. So, building is a great solution to GAS!!! :o

I have them in my Gretsch 6072 hollowbody, and if they are the same specs, they are nice, solid pups. Very deep and bassy without being muddy. Lots of power too!

As for the wiring setup, I ordered a harness from TV Jones that will give me the pup selector switch as well as a master volume, which I love having on my basses.

I do think the first tailpiece looks better because it's shorter. This one is a bit too long, now that I look at it! Maybe I will look at shortening it. Now for some engineering..................

Good news on the tail piece. The top buttons pop off and the wire piece can be moved up and cut to length! So, we'll be experimenting with that later in the week.

Too late!! I shortened it and I like the look. I only took .75 inch or so off and it fits better and I think the strings will ride better on the saddles with the change in angle. Pics later.

I think you're right. I've always been a Sonic Blue fan and I think that would work well with the binding. I'm not bothered by al of the input. I'm starting to just mull things around more seriously..........

Thanks Shadow! I'm embarrassed to say that I was typing at my desk in my office and didn't even notice it! To tell you how starved we are for news, the local radio station pre-empted 2 hours of Rush Limbaugh to talk to people who "felt the tremor." Two hours of people calling in saying things like, "Yeah, I was sitting on the john and the toilet paper started to fall off the roll." Captivating radio for sure!!! :P Not one bit of damage or disruption of daily activities, but we have to talk about it for hours!!!!!! Crazy.

We have them in NY, but they tend to be mild. This is the second one here in 18 years. No big deal. I was in the one in the Philippines in 68 and it knocked furniture over and shook me (while in my bed) across the room! It hit around 4 AM, so most people were asleep. That was an earthquake! Over 260 people were killed, most in an apartment building that collapsed in Manila.

:D You're a funny guy! You know it takes me forever to finish anything! I actually will be doing some final sanding on it this weekend. Then fret leveling and dressing. After that, I'll start working on finishing the back, side and neck. Than the top and headstock. So, we're getting there!

I used a 2 1/4" hole cutter with the center drill removed, matches up pretty well with a 2 1/8" Forstner for the body. The cut circle stays in the cutter, you just push it out. The cover is 1/8" masonite ala Danelectro, lacquered. I got tired of waiting for my plastic to arrive.

I'm not man enough. I also don't know how to quote 2 posts so:

Carbide tipped holesaw, the SVT (or HiWatt) of holesaws. I've used 4" and 6" diameter ones to cut thousands of circles out of 3/4" MDF.

I get the impression that the seller tells a good story but may not know as much about bass guitars in general as he would like you to believe. There are some minor mis-statements...like "Schaellers" and the odd measurement he offers for the scale length. OTOH, his feedback is 100%.

I agree with the seller that IF the story is true, then it would be a mistake to refinish the bass. That's a shame, because the color repels me personally. I'm sure that Bill is going to create a MUCH more attractive instrument.

My brother's first real guitar was a green Gretsch hollowbody, I don't remember the model. He took it to Fred Jr. in Brooklyn when the truss rod broke.

No problem, I'll share my masking. I use some secret tape to bend around the curves on top! Ditto on the humidity. I've got three projects ready for S&S and I'm just waiting.......................... :-\

Being an audiologist by training, I did think of that, even maybe something like "db." But I liked the stylized lettering in caps better in the end.

It's highly probable somebody is using the DB name in relation to musical instruments, it's pretty easy to do a free trademark search if you care. That's one of the reasons I'm not using it.

It's not just the logo design, it's also the words (or letters, in this case). If another company using the db name has a trademark that's described as covering musical instruments, then you wouldn't stand a chance if you came to their attention. It might be worth your while to research it.

So, there is room if there is enough differentiation. I did discover there is a possibility of trad marking Dr Bass and Dr Bassman, so I'm considering that as well.

That looks like a good possibility there. Maybe there's a way to more tightly integrate the clef and the "Dr. Bassman" logo.
G&L does something similar but using the treble clef symbol in place of the "&" and it works quite well!

Terry, Well dude, it looks like I'm going to have the first SOLD bass with the famous DB logo. (Eat your heart out, haha). It only took me a little over two to three years to convince the Doc to do it for me though. :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

You're killing me! I S&Sed the bass a while back, but have decided to take some wood off of the neck, don't like the profile. So, it's back on the been in line behind everyone else!!!! With all of the fall stuff going on, it's gonna be a while before I touch any of my projects. Especially with the new band, that's really eating into my free time! But hey, right now, I'd rather play than build while I'm still able!

It's great to be here! Yesterday was the 2 year anniversary of my cancer surgery!!! It's gone by so quickly and I'm feeling great. Good medicine, docs and blessings have been with me all this time. I am sooooooo blessed!

I'm weak, but I worked outside all day. Built steps for the deck and mud room exit. Helped with some yard work and I'm spent. But I feel better, so all us good.

As for old Billy, he's resting comfortably under a towel with 3 basses needing hardware and three bodies waiting for routing. I haven't been down there in seven weeks, but I'm sure I'll be able to try this coming week. If I just can't face Billy when I go down, maybe I'll send him over to you Kenny. He can rest with your unfinished projects! Maybe learn some Gaelic. ;D

I hear you. It's not that I can't do a lot of stuff for one day, but the payback for weeks after that is severe. I'm having to learn that even though I can physically do something involving stress or strong exertion, there may be unexpected consequences that wouldn't have happened 20 years ago.

If I did do silver, it would be the smaller silver, not the bigger sparkles like Gretsch. Those are a bit too much for my tastes.

Gold top is really slick and the dark walnut stain on the back goes with it perfectly. I really like how the gold top looks on this body style. The typical red "only" Billybos are a bit repetitious. I'll get rest of the hardware on it this week depending on how I feel.

Didn't see that coming with the switches and extra vol control. Duh. So I'm redrilling all of the channels which is difficult on a painted body. Have to be so careful! I'm down to one channel left to enlarge, so I'm almost finished. It's about 3/4ths the way complete. In the future I'll be more thoughtful if I have a bunch of extra wiring to run. Unlikely though since I'm not big on switches and extra controls. I was just trying to stay true to the original BillyBo set up. :P

I can see significant floor space appearing and a stack of flattened empty boxes have appeared...
Take it easy, Bill... you're gonna get roughs and smooths... one step at a time and if you need to take a break, take it... ;)

So, yesterday I gave into taking the pain killers and I feel a lot better. I can actually do stuff now. Hopefully this next week will be better! I just hate taking any drugs of any kind, to the point of torturing myself unnecessarily! Duh, I'm not doing that any more. :P

I'll post any progress I make on the BillyBo.

I do think that is often the case. I'm just not inclined to take stuff. There's something in my brain that just fights it. Drugs do seem to work well on me in small doses, so I can't complain about that.
