Sorry to hear of it.  I respected their work but didn't much like some of it.

For Example, I never figure out why so many people like "Dirty Work."  To me it was just a dreary, rather slow number that didn't tell a story I wanted to hear.  "Deacon Blue" didn't impress me either.

But the musicianship of the band was strong.

One of my favorite bands of all time. Though not so much a hit machine they generated a catalog of brilliant material
that eclipsed their lesser stuff (such as it was) by far. Using some of the best side men in the world in various combinations certainly made their work shine.

And back when, when you wanted to get an idea of how good your home stereo really was all you had to do was put on a Steely Dan album.

I met him once in passing in Rudy's Music here in NYC, actually chatted for a while about gear.
I didn't find out who he was until after he had left... :-\

I remember buying Aja during the summer of '77.  Some excellent bass by Chuck Rainey and Becker played bass on Decon Blues.  What a great sounding LP.  At least the first ABC pressing.  Don't bother with the later MCA versions.  I always thought that photo of Becker inside the gatefold was mysterious looking.  At least that's what this (then) 15 year old thought all those years ago.  R.I.P.

I have always loved Steely Dan, and Becker's passing makes me kick myself for not going to see them while I still could.

They weren't exactly Grand Funk Railroad when it comes to sweat and grime, but some of the arrangements were exquisite. Some of their other stuff bordered on anodyne mock-jazz elevator music to my ears.  :-\ Certainly thinking man's music though.
